Hi, first time at the lounge but wanted to submit a story of 8 calls coming to my home today for my wife from 2 separate universities; I recognized one of the telemarketer's voices from before, but told her I had registered a complaint on the FTC web site as she was caller 6. The last one I told if he calle again, he would likely get screamed at. He hasn't nor have any of his cronies.. We are on the don't call registry, but any tasteful way to have some "fun" with these guys and gals to: a. get the message across, and b. Invite us for dinner and maybe we'll consider your thing.. Of course we'll pick the priciest place in town.. If remembered telemarketer calls again, may indulge in some conversation. Gotta sobering tale related to this? :) (Drussell52)

My favorite is always holding the phone a little bit away and talk like I'm talking to others in the room and saying very loudly 'See I don't you they don't care how many times you file bankruptcy, they will still give you credit'. Usually they hang up.

I know this will aggravate them because I've used it.
If you have very young kids (like 3 years old or so), put one on the phone and tell them to describe their day to the nice young man/woman on the phone. Even better if they've been puking all day. 
Thanks, will try the Sinefeld line of questioning, my kids are teenagers, but it has been nearly 3hours since the last "one" called, so maybe they verified that a complaint was posted at the FTC site. I fell for the first one's scoop because she said my wife had put down are number for info. After the third one, realized what was happenin..

I think telemarketers must really dislike me since I always hang up on them.My dad does the same thing.

Himself does not like to talk on the phone, but the last time we got a telemarketer call that was answered (thank You, God for callerID) he took the phone to the living room, piled up on the couch and asked the guy to describe every single item he offered in great detail, then continued asking questions for a good 30 minutes. At the end of it all, he told the guy he wasn't interested but thanked him for calling and hung up.
I don't have the patience to do that, but we certainly never got a call fro, *that* company again.

My husband and I have caller ID and if we see "Unknown Number" on the screen, we don't even pick it up. But some of your ideas sound pretty funny, I may try some of them sometime. The one about putting your kid on the phone is a gem, unfortunately we don't have any kids, but I guess a good variation on that one would be to just talk about your own day with the person, or just chat on and on and on about absolutely nothing. Yeah, I think I may try that some day! 
Our neighbors have a message on their answering machine that goes something like, "You've reached the [insert name here] residence. We can't come to the phone right now. If this is a telemarketer, please leave your home phone number and the time you eat dinner so we can call you and interrupt your meal. For everyone else, please leave a message at the sound of the tone." 
The worst telemarketer call I've ever had was years ago before we had either a caller ID or an answering machine. Some guy called trying to sell me light bulbs. These bulbs were guaranteed to never burn out (or some such claim), and they were ONLY $40.00 a box. I said sorry that's too expensive, and this clown starts hollering at me!  Needless to say, I hung up on him! Boy did that one make me mad!!!

In the past, if I've had the time, I've also played along with them and in the end told them I wasn't interested. I've also chatted their ears off occasionally, going completely off the subject, never simply answering 'yes' or 'no', and just talking about my day. I've had THEM hang up on me more often than not!

When I get tele-marketer calls, it still shows who's calling, but sometimes with weird characters or incomplete phone # information. If I do not recognize the number, I just simply do not answer it at all.

When my wife and I were first married I was working 3rd shift and one day she caved and bought some "lifetime lightbulbs" for an enormous price. Seeing that she had been duped I asked her not to do that again. So the next time they called she told them to talk to me at 11:00 am. I was in a very hard sleep at that time and she knew it. They called and I answered the phone very abruptly and they asked if I wanted more lightbulbs. I said NO. They said sir our records show you only bought two. I said yes and have no need of any more. They said do you not have more than two light sockets in your house? I said yes. Then would you not need more bulbs? I said NO. Why not sir? My response was when I get done in one room I unscrew the bulb and take it to next room I was going to be in. With two bulbs I should be stocked up for two lifetimes. They never called back.

When I was living at home aluminum siding was becoming popular in our area. Dad was the only one working and with four kids every penny was precious. Sears called and wanted to sell some siding to dad. He said that you couldn't side his place of residence. They asked if he had wood siding. No. Brick? No. Mountain Stone? No. Siding already installed? No. Sir what type of house do you live in? His response was I don't I live in a tent next to a telephone pole with a line connected to the phone. I don't want your siding. They never called back.
