hello does anyone have teenage sons. I have only one boy he is really a great kid, he comes home when told, he comes to church active in youth group. Here is my question does anyone know anything about a game called dark asylum? its an online fantasy role playing game. do any of your teen sons play this? is this something he should be involved with?? or should i not worry about this? from what i see they pretend to kill people and they have different roles and responsibilites, i am not sure this is helping his spirtual nature in anyway he is 16 and i am not sure what to do about this any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I love him so much and dont want him going down a bad path. any moms have any advice???

I don't know anything about Dark Asylum, specifically. But my son has played other online fantasy games that we have been okay with. The things that concern me are: 1. Graphics- Is it cartoony, or life-like? Is there blood? (Thats a big no.) 2. Story- Is it realistic, or truly fantasy? Is it killing people, or monsters? 3. Membership- Is there a fee? How much profile information shows about my son? How does he interact with other characters? I don't allow anything with open chat that lets other players say whatever they want to anyone. There are some games that we allow and some we do not, and he understands the reasons why.

I've never heard of the game (which is odd, usually I at least hear of them) and I can't seem to find any info on it via Google. Are you sure that's the correct game name? Unless it's one of the text-based "write a story together" types, in which case it's probably this one: http://www.roleplaygateway.com/dark-asylum-t11580.html The thing about, well, ANY online game is that the type of environment it is is going to depend on a) the game parameters, and b) the people who are playing it. As such, it can either be a great creative and imaginative experience (and a good exercise in writing fiction, in the case of text-based "write a story together" types), or it can be something really dark and involve things that you would rather your child not get into. My husband and I used to run guilds for online games. We would insist on roleplaying, but we would also insist that people keep it clean (no sexual content or curse words), and we tried to involve Christian thoughts, morals, and ideals as much as possible (including witnessing to kids when the opportunity came up). In fact, two of our guild officers (people who helped run the guild and kept things in order) were pastors. If your son were part of something people like us were running, I would say you have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, my husband and I just left a guild (not one we were running, frankly we don't have the time for that these days) because it had gone very much downhill in terms of language and topics of discussion. So, frankly, the only thing you can do is keep an eye on what exactly they're doing and whether or not you're okay with the content, and talk to your son about it and see what his perspective is. I don't really see it as much different from reading, say, fantasy novels, but with those as well, it's good to monitor the content, right? And, it's good to monitor that it's not taking over his life and/or causing him to shirk other duties and hobbies, even if the content *is* okay.
