Trish, now you have my curiosity piqued: How DID you quit smoking?????

Um, I was hanging out some laundry. I leaned down to pick up the next item which was sitting in a basket on the step. My head accidentally hit the corner of a metal framed window. I finished hanging up the laundry just as my housemates came home. I complained of a headache and went to go and lie down. About 8 hours later, the mother of one of my housemates woke me to see if I was ok. I'm pretty sure that I concussed myself. Every time I tried to smoke after that, I felt like I was sinking through the floorboards. Years later, I tried one, and still felt like I was sinking through the floorboards. Needless to say, I don't smoke anymore. It's NOT a good way to stop smoking.

Nope, I wouldn't recommend it! Glad it worked for you, though!

Good morning all!

Third day of not smoking! Definitely getting easier!

I haven't been doing much the past few days 'cuz I didnt wanna take the chance of being testy around anyone but I am really itching to get out of the house today. I may try to hit a meeting tonight since I know it's a non-smoking meeting.

Other than that, not much to report. It's been an (intentionally) quiet weekend.

That's awesome, Lisa!

My dad quit smoking after 20 years when I was in high school. He replaced his cigarettes with hugs. So, when he got a craving, we gave him a hug. lol. well, it worked well for him, but he's still claiming those hugs! hahaha!

I saw a special on tv about the dum dums and how the mystery flavor came to be. Quite interesting stuff!

I misread that as The Prodigal Saltlick.

Which would be a good name for a rock band.

And might come in handy to a recovering smoker.

Thank you, DivaB. I'm rather surprised myself, it hasn't been as difficult as I thought it would be. I think praying and and already working a 12 step program is really helping! I did have a moment or two of snippiness today, but under the circumstances, I think it was not unwarranted. DS was being incredibly mouthy and attitudinal, and I had to put a stop to it. My 72 hours have passed, so anything from here on out is mostly psychological.

What are you doing with the money you normal spend on cigarettes? I think it would be cool if you could set that money aside for a month and treat yourself to something with that money.

I've already thought of that. For me, it comes out to roughly $75 per month, so I think I am going to start treating myself once a month to either A) a mani-pedi or B) a massage therapist. I love pampering myself, and these will make me feel way better!

Actually, I could do the mani-pedi TWICE a month! Whoo hoo! Even better!

I don't know you, but hai!

No one here knows about this, but I usually only smoke when it's cool/cold outside. One or two an evening after the kids go to bed and I have a moment to relax. It actually helps being in Florida since there are more hot evenings than cool. I can't stand the humidity and bugs which is why I save it for the cold weather.

Kudos on quitting and maybe you'll be an inspiration!

Now I could handle a mani-pedi every month! lol...maybe I can tell my hubby I'm going to "quit smoking" so I can do that??

Who am I kidding...I don't have that kind of time!

I'd vote for massage therapy; if you can find one who will do a half hour treatment you could probably go every 2 weeks. I generally do half-hour segments and I find it more effective if I have a trouble spot somewhere (which I usually do) to get two half-hours a week or two apart.

Sounds like a great idea either way though!

My lips are still puckered at the idea of a salt lick.

ETA: meant to mention this yesterday but got a runtime error. Good for you for quitting! My mother kicked it a few times but went back a few times; you'll know you have it licked when you go through something incredibly stressful but don't start up again. My mom quit the last time when my sister (who was sixteen at the time) started smoking; they made a pact to quit together, and she's stayed off it for ten years... and gone through some crazy amounts of stress without starting up again!

Her quitting method was rather accidental too; she got a really bad head cold and couldn't go outside to smoke for a week. Even if she'd been able to go outside, her lungs were too congested to let her smoke. That took care of the worst of the withdrawal symptoms!

Hi Tinkerbell! Welcome! You know, I always used to say I wanted to be a smoker like that, only occasionally, and "socially". But after taking a good, long look at myself, and being honest, I know that I can never do that. I am a nicotine addict just as surely as I am addicted to other drugs. So complete abstinence is the only way for me to be free. Be honest with yourself...if you only do it on rare occasions, then why do it at all? And if you find you "need" those rare occasions, aren't you then just as bound as a 4 pack-a-day smoker? Please note although I am using the word "you" I am speaking mainly of my own experience. I was never "much" of a smoker (< 1 pack a day) bu t for me, the amount didn't matter. What mattered to me was being a slave to it, of "having" to have it. I decided that that was no longer acceptable.

Jen, I may trade off between the nails and the massages. Mostly, I'm just trying to find non-food ways of treating myself. After I make some progress with the smoking, I plan to turn my attention to my overeating, so I don't want to make food or eating a "reward" for not smoking.

I have a quitting "pact" with my mom, however, her success or failure has no bearing on mine. We each take responsibility for our own "recovery."

I wish that illness had prevented me from smoking. I have smoked through bronchitis and pneumonia, and I'm heading for COPD if I don't quit now.

Anyway, don't mean to get all too serious with this. I am just thankful for the last 96 hours!

Good Morning CWers!

Today I am trying to finalize my plans for Thanksgiving. My mom and dad will be out of town visiting my brother, so it will be me, DH, DS, and DA (dear aunt). I'm trying to decide on the menu, we all want traditional things, but I'm not willing to cook EVERYTHING just for the four of us. This is what I've decided so far:

Roast turkey breast and turkey gravy
"kicked up" Stove Top stuffing
baked sweet potatoes
green bean casserole
jellied cranberry sauce

Anything else I should add?

Still not smoking. DA gifted me a huge 300-count bag of Dum-Dums so I'm set for a while.

If it were me, I couldn't live without:
Mashed potatoes
rolls (we always do the brown n serve)
pies (I just made a pumpkin pecan pie....those are nice because you get two pies in one!)

And yay on the dum dums...those should last you a bit.

Oh yeah, rolls and pies are a given I'll be doing pumpkin and probably sweet potato pies.

Crescent rolls are our thing. *yum*

I may go ahead and do the potatoes. I usually make them from scratch for a holiday, with butter and real cream. Maybe I'll do those instead of sweet potatoes.

I may also check with Winn-Dixie and see how much a prepared dinner for 4 is. That would be soooo much easier, maybe less expensive too.

I guess it doesn't really matter because whatever we don't have on Thanksgiving, I'm sure I WILL be cooking when we have Thanksmas (that's our family holiday in between Thxgiving and Christmas when we all can get together and celebrate both holidays).

Maybe we will go out. I'm so indecisive.

Kerrlaw, feel free. I not only stole the name, but also the idea from an old friend from high school. For us, it's the perfect solution because then the in-laws (and outlaws) can't complain or fuss because we are always free to have the holiday with them. Getting everyone together in one place is a challenge anyway, but much more so on the holidays. This year, Thanksmas will be the weekend of Dec. 12 and will last the whole weekend. Next year that might change, depending on everyone's circumstances. But that's okay. As long as we can have ONE day a year to get the family together, then it is very much worth it.

Could you also hypothetically say that on black friday when you're grabbing a toy out of a lady's hands?
