How, specifically, does the Bible get in the way of our relationship with God?

We're dancing around together on this forum aren't we?

I like to think of God as bigger than one book. That he has more to say to us than just what has already been written. The Bible is a starting point, not the end.

So, you are open to new revelations? How do you know if it is really true, if the Bible is not your authoritative guideline of faith and conduct?

The Bible is not just a "starting point."

It is God's revelation of Himself to mankind.

Without it, we do not and cannot know God's character.

So did God change His mind about John 14:6?

How do we know anything is 'really true'? Even the Bible. It does cause lots of soul searching and examination and a whole lot else to think this way and it certainly is not for everyone.

The path I'm on may have many twists and turns, but I demand of no one that they follow me or presume to tell them they are on the wrong path themselves.

We don't. But we don't need to know something to believe it.

Jesus did these things. Was Jesus wrong to do so?

God can do anything he wants. Can't he? We just have to be open to the possibilities.

But Mr. F, by now you knew I would say something like that, didn't you?

Good night and peace be with you.

Yes. The question becomes, then - what does God want? Does God want to be the kind of God who goes back on His word, saying one thing at one time and then changing His mind later, for no reason?

Good night and peace be with you.

And with you!

I can understand how that would bother some, but it doesn't bother me. I like to think God is a 'big tent' kind of deity.

Does it bother you that you just scored a "F" in Lesson One of Christianity 101?

It does bother me sometimes that we let the Bible get in the way of our relationship with God.

Which god is that?

Scripture says,

quote:

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything
that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD
your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to
the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to
thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. (Exodus 20:4-6)

There are many things I would like to think about God, but they are not Biblical, founded on God's word. Therefore, I must reject them. We are not free to form our own image of God. That is called idolatry. No one - let me repeat that - NO ONE goes to the Father without going through Christ. Jesus says,

quote:

"I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate,
but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who enters by the gate is
the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his
voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own,
he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do
not recognize a stranger's voice."

Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
Therefore Jesus said again,

"I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves
and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me
will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and
kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand
is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming,
he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.
The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am
the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me-- just as the Father knows me
and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep
that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice,
and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me
is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but
I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again.
This command I received from my Father." (John 10:1-18)

Yes, Muslims can be saved. But they must go through Jesus Christ. Not the Jesus of the Quran, who did not die a cross for the sin of the world.

quote:

I can understand why some might think he more a motivational speaker than a 'minister'. He doesn't dwell too much on 'fire and brimstone'.

One doesn't have to focus on "fire and brimstone" to preach a Biblical message. But neither should one avoid it. Sin is a reality. Hell is a reality. God's judgment on sin is a reality. Joel has his church hold out their Bibles and do a chant about believing it, etc., but then he goes on to "preach" his "sermon" (motivational speech on how to get your best now, regardless of how you live your life) without even using Scripture. It is all based on his ideas about what he thinks about God, and not based on God's word. Regarding this, refer to Exodus 20: 4-6 again.

I agree with this post, and I personally am not a fan of Joel Osteen, and do believe that he goes by word of faith teachings and motivational teaching rather than Biblical teaching. One thing I can say is that he can sure fill a colliseum and I'm sure he makes a LOT of money. ChaChing. Wasn't it the Pharisees in Jesus day that equated prosperity as being God's blessing on whomever received it? -- oh, but that's for another thread!

You have a misconception of God.

He is not all-inclusive.
There is only ONE WAY to Him.
Through the blood of Jesus Christ
and by the drawing of the Holy Spirit.

I'm sorry I think it's called New Age.
