Like many in our Nation was laid off and have taken a Cobra Plan for my Health Insurance for the short term . In the process Iam looking for a job that will include some form of Insurance . Cobra is very expensive and my age of 61 is not in my favor for attaining private insurance . I was just reading about a Christain Health plan and was curious what people think about different types of individual health care plans out there. Would like to find and affordable individual Health care plan for my age . Any ideas appreciated .

Do still check around for a lower cost option to COBRA. I suspect you will find one that's slightly less.

Hi Harvie - I live in Ca. and I am not sure what government - Funded Health programs you are refering to . I would not qualify for Med-Cal . If there is any other I might be interested in looking into them .

Hi GroupW - I tried AARP and was turn down do to my health history which I was really surprised at considering the health issues that I have are not any worst than anyone else my age of 61yrs .I talked to my Cobra Insurance Carrier that is handling my Cobra and was told that on Feb.1st my Cobra Ins will be exhausted and that once that was the case I could apply for Cal. Cobra here in Ca. I was also told they had a conversion plan that they would send me to look at that I could buy which from my understanding is gauged by your age and that would be how the premium rates would be set . I Really need to find a job with insurance ,but even if I do most employers have a 90 day waiting period which right now puts me very close to my Cobra stopping . I am not really letting this consume me ,but it is a concern . I know God is in control and that everything will work out just fine . He has been with me through much more difficult things than this and he is still there watching over me now .

Bummer - I had high hopes there.
Your state option isn't going to be cheap, but likely cheaper than COBRA. It may be as good as it gets. I would keep trying, however. Different companies have different underwriting guidelines, so it's difficult to predict who will take you and who won't.
You might also try various healthcare related forums and see if anyone on one of those boards has had success.

Check out Samaritan Ministries.
I learned about it from this forum's admin, Fritzpw_Admin, in another thread in this folder. He said he'd be glad to answer questions via PM, since he uses it.

From what I've read, Samaritan Ministries appears to be a good alternative to the nightmare of private insurance. But since it (and Medi-Share) technically isn't insurance, I wonder if it would cease to exist if the new health care bill is enacted.
