Hopefully the business gave the first 200 to their employees that are elderly and pregnant.

Sorry, had to do a double-take then - I read "elderly and pregnant" and thought WHAT? lol

(sorry I know it's a serious subject, but I confess it made me chuckle!!)

I hate blowers, also but something that is loud and scary (at least to me) that has me more concerned is the police helicopter that seems to be constantly circling around our neighborhood. At least once a week now, they are circling around very low to the ground, with their spotlight shining. Between that going on and all of the officer involved shootings, we have been hearing about, makes me think our town's crime rate must be going through the roof!

We get a lot of helicopter hovering, too ... and three Police Officer-Involved shootings in less than a week = a definite crime problem here.

FOR MY CANADIAN FRIENDS

I just heard from my friend, Chari, at Fort Hood. Her husband is safe ... but they've been told that the kids will remain in the schools on "lockdown" until, possibly, midnight. (There are a number of schools on the base ... it's very large.) Continued prayers for all involved.

Yeah, if I remember correctly from our days there, it has like 7 or 9 schools on post. 50,000 soldiers stationed there (when no one is deployed) plus twice that in civilian personnel. It is a very large base, but everything is pretty clustered in one generally close area...then housing outside of that area, and most of the base is the range. When we lived there, we could easily drive across the post from our housing area to where Paul worked in under 10 minutes...when it wasn't peak driving times. When peak times arrived, it took at least 30-45 minutes for him to get home. I know exactly where the shooting took place...weird to see places you have been on the news...esp with this type of situation.

You're right, the news said 9. I just can't imagine a post that big. It's a city!

I am glad that my wonderful DH is home, safe and sound. And I'm sad that for so many families tonight, a loved one isn't coming home, safe and sound.

Yes...all posts are basically that, a city that you have to go through a check point and show ID to get into.
I know it sounds big, but really it isn't that huge...most of it is range. I have lived in cities that would take up the whole area of Ft Hood and be completely filled. However, yes, it is a very large base...largest in the "free world" as they say it. This just sets in for me that for sure I don't want to have to go back there next year. (At this time, unless/until he changes his orders, Ft Hood is the destination we would go to).

I've been to base housing for SAC, and they don't have grocery stores or schools. Just housing. So I didn't know it was any other way I guess.

hmmm...interesting. Well, I can say for sure that Ft Hood TX, Ft Sill OK, Ft Polk LA, Ft Knox KY, Ft Riley KS, Ft Stewart GA, Ft Carson CO, Ft Benning GA, Ft Bliss TX...all are set up just like a little town of their own. More I am sure, but those are the ones I have personally been to or researched enough to know. I would say only having housing is a minority.

I haven't seen any bases with schools, but they have always had a PX, Commissary, movie theater, gym, housing, etc... But then, I don't have much experience with Army bases, just Air Force and Navy/Marine Corps ones which I think tend to be smaller so no need for a school.

Really? Weird. All I have been to or researched have school...I think. (For sure all I have been to have them). I would guess that if they didn't the kids were bussed out to the town's schools around them, but that would have to be a pretty small post for them to do that.

Everywhere we lived the kids just went to school out in town with everyone else. The only people I know of going to a school on post were my friends who were stationed in Spain, then it was a DoD school. But like I said, the Navy and Marine Corps are a much smaller community, so the bases are smaller as well.

Yeah it must be related to the size of the post. I wonder if Carson has a school since it is one of the smallest Army posts. Do you know? ( I could look it up if I wanted to, but I don't want to)

Do you guys send out Christmas cards? My list has shortened over the years and I don't send as many now. What about those "life letters" that families send out? I get one every year from a gal I went to grade schol with and I enjoy reading her's. I think I sent one a few years ago, but won't any more.

I send out Christmas cards every year. I don't do 'life letters' though. I don't think my life is interesting enough to do one of those. The only thing I'd be putting on it would be the next medical problem they've found wrong with me. I could actually put in this year's letter about my brothers being here from interstate at the moment. Oh, and me turning 40 in April. That's about the only exciting thing that's happened this year. Other than that, it would be depressing health issues. I'll spare people that ordeal.

I posted this in the SAH thread.

I had to make 2 dozen cupcakes for a funeral this afternoon. A woman (was in my sisters class) had her three kids with her (kids wanted rides on the combine) and on her way home she turned off the dirt road going the wrong way on the hi-way. She was not buckled and the oldest two kids (10, 8) were not buckled either. The two kids surrived but the mother did not. She was 34. The baby (2) was the only one who was buckled in her car seat.

We used to send out Christmas cards, although the years I was sick it was hit-or-miss. I don't know if we will this year or not. We're re-thinking a lot of things this year.

I've never sent out a life-letter, either, Cherish for pretty much the same reasons as you. When I was sick, there sure was a lot of stuff going on in my life, but I'm SURE no one would have wanted the gory details . I am thrilled to say that my life is so boring now that I'm afraid I would have nothing to write .

Sometimes the housing area is separate from everything else.
Usually housing is close by, sometimes within walking distance.

When we lived in Oklahoma, they only had an elementary school in the base housing area. We were bused to a local school for junior high and high school.

When we lived in Germany (twice), K-12 was in the housing area.

At all 3 bases, the housing area was separate from the main /working part of the base and not included in the guarded areas.

Peace,
Anne

Every base I have been onto, you had to go through security check points to get to the housing. In Germany our housing area was separated from the actual base by the town of Baumholder, but you still had to go through checks to get into it. For us to go to the Commissary in Baumholder, by car or taxi (or walking), we had to pull out our military id's no less then 5 times. If by bus, it was no less then 9 times. I have found that it is a lot more lax here though then in Germany.

Wow.

When I was in high school, I worked at the commissary. I walked from the housing area and showed my ID just once.

That was a loooooong time ago. Maybe things have changed.

Peace,
Anne

There's no housing, exchange or commissary at my wonderful DH's air national guard base, but that's pretty normal -- it's co-located with the local airport. The nearest full-size base around here is Lemoore Naval Air Station (about an hour away) ... it has a hospital, an Exchange, a Commissary, etc. There are two elementary schools located adjacent to the base, but they are part of and operated by the local school district. The station encompasses almost 30,000 acres, of which 18.784 are owned outright by the Navy, and 11,020 more are used under air easement contract. I think there's about 5000 people stationed at the base, plus dependents.

To access either DH's base or Lemoore NAS, you need a DOD sticker on your car and military ID.
