Harvie, how is Limpy cat doing? Any more possums (or other nocturnal wildlife) stealing his food? And what are your ave temps this time of year? I can't really imagine 80s into Nov. Though a few years ago Mark and I were walking on the beach up here the first weekend of Nov barefoot wishing we had worn shorts. And 2 years ago we went to the local chili cook-off and ate chili in 80+ degree weather. Both of those days felt very odd!

Kris

Limpy Cat seems to be doing fine ... but it can be hard to tell when all we see him do is (a) limp; (b) eat; and (c) sleep and watch birdies ... but he's doing all three things. Lately his wet food seems to be disappearing faster and we don't know if he's bulking up for winter or someone is snacking on his wet food, so we've been feeding him extra. And he always has dry food and fresh water on the front porch, too.

According to the Internet, Fresno's average high temp for November is 63 ... and the weatherman said that for early November the average high is the low 70s. Either way, 80s for the first week of November is "above average." Did I mention that I have blossoms on some of our trees!? LOL! December and January are the coldest months of the year -- so I do expect things to cool down eventually .... but I did expect to see people in sweaters and sweatshirts in November, and not running around in shorts.

A few people are still wearing shorts here too, those few brave souls who where them almost year round, not "normal" folks.

I just placed my very first ever order online! I ordered some books for Christmas gifts and think I saved a lot, compared with buying in the store. Yay!

Reminds me of a friend who works in intelligence; people are always getting excited about her career when they meet her at parties. They'll say, "Ooooh, if you told me what exactly you do, would you have to kill me?" She just rolls her eyes and says "no... I just can't tell you." I guess official secrets aren't that exciting; just important to be kept secret.

Quick prayer request for my hubby, he's having sinus surgery tomorrow. It's outpatient, but still... BIL is dropping him off, and I'm picking him up with the kids in tow. Should be interesting.

Praying for you too while I'm at it... my DH had outpatient surgery Thursday and I'm just wiped out trying to take care of him and keep up with chores.

LOL ... I wear shorts almost year round, but no one has ever accused me of being normal! Actually, I do switch to fuzzy pajama bottoms for December and January, usually. (grin)

We do a lot of shopping online -- sometimes I just can't find what I want in local stores. I just ordered new return address labels from Colorful Images because I was running out. And I just received in the mail the three new clear shower curtain liners that I'd ordered last week.

Harvie, was this recently on Hannity and is it about saving the fish? My cousin loves out that way and she was at the same protest that Hannity was. Do you know anything about that issue and is it bad for the farmers?

Same issue. Same farmers. Same fish (which, by the way, aren't even a native California species .... how silly is that?)

The unemployment in the small ag communities in western Fresno County is more than 50%.(The unemployment in our County as a whole is near 20%.) As we drove out to Firebaugh yesterday, we passed orchard after orchard of dead trees being bulldozed over because the federal government cut off the farmer's water so that they could attempt to get more fish in northern California rivers and streams.

Food grows where water flows. No water? No Food. No Jobs.

Kath, welcome back! Are you feeling better?

------------------------------------------------

Speaking of checks, sigh, I think a friend may have inadvertantly lost a check of mine. On my trip I was house guest to 4 people(well, sort of, we never stayed the night at her mom's, but we were there a lot, and ate there a few times, she had coffee ready for me a few times, and she graciously loaned us her car a lot). I sent Thank you notes with checks. My friend's mom got her card and check a while back. I kept asking my friend if she had gotten hers and she kept saying no. She checked the mail today, and still no card from me. I was starting to worry it got lost in the mail.

Then she finally admitted to me today, that if she looks at a pile of mail, and it all looks like junk mail, she'll just throw it away, without going through the pile and looking at each piece of mail. So, my guess is, she threw my card away. . She does have a mental illness, so I can't really get mad her, but although I knew some of the affects of her illness, it never occured to me that she didn't sort mail. If I had known this would happen I would have sent her card to her mom's house (they live only about 2 or 3 miles apart). Now, I don't know what to do. Do I need to call the bank? And should I write another check?

The wisest course of action is to issue a Stop Pay on the check, and write a new one. Make sure your friend doesn't attempt to cash the first (stopped) check in case it turns up. Put the check in a card with a colored envelope, then have your friend look for the "blue" envelope (or use her mom's address.)

Ok, thanks Harvie. I think I will send the new card to her MOM'S and tell her mom what to look for. Can you do a stop pay by phone?

You can stop it online or call the bank and they can do it. There is usually a fee to stop a check, so it depends on the amount of the check. My bank charges 25.00.

$25.00???? yikes! I guess I have to do what I have to do.

I don't mind sending her another check, but I do mind having a fee because she wouldn't sort her mail (she said it was too overwhelming, I said, well, put all your mail in a basket, and take out one piece whenever you go by, and deal with that one piece). Now she just told me on the phone not to send another check because she was going to send the same amount for my birthday and we can call it even. I wanted to send her $, though, becuase I DID use her food, and I DID use her utilities.

Mine's Chase. Credit unions are more lenient. You can ask if they'll waive it because it was lost. They might as a courtesy.

Hmmm...... I'm suspicious that my achey body and all-day headache may be related to yesterday's H1N1 flu shot. Anyway, I can't take anything for the headache, so I guess I'll just try some cold compresses again ... and laying low tonight. My wonderful DH brought me home chicken Pho for dinner (vietnamese chicken noodle soup) .... so I'm sure I'll be good as new in no time!

OK, I've decided that watching election results is pretty boring when none of the elections are occurring in your half of the country, LOL!
