Wow.. your wait was relatively quick compared to the ones they were trying to do here. My sister tried to go to two different places and they left when they saw how long it would take.

My mom wants me to get the H1N1, but so far there haven't been any clinics in my area. I also haven't gotten my regular flu shot yet either. I am hoping that I can build up the immunity from so many having it in the classroom and have some protection from all of the Lysol I have breathed in over the past couple of weeks ( I really don't think so, but it is nice to wonder).

I had no intentions of getting it, but now that all the babies I'm caring for keep getting sick, I'm starting to wonder. . .

Well, they were saying on the news tonight that for the next H1N1 flu vaccine clinics, people should consider showing up "very early" and plan to "wait a long time." The clinic will be held from 4-7pm in the Community Room of one of our shopping malls on Wednesday, and the health department expects "thousands." YIKES! That was exactly why, instead, we chose to drive an hour out of town and go to the rural clinic in a tiny town. The silly thing? Most of the people in line that we ended up chatting with were doing JUST what we were doing -- they'd driven out from our city, too. For people who aren't seriously concerned about the H1N1, you may be better off just waiting a few weeks and keep checking with your doctors to see when/if they will be getting the vaccine. (I just wanted to get protected ASAP since I'm so very high risk, ya know?) For those of you keeping track, we've officially finished "the cabbage." I can now report that after eating it for a week or so, I'm definitely tired of cabbage and will be taking a break from that splendiferous cruciferous veggie! I also finished off the spinach tonight and think I may need a spinach break, too, LOL! I finished the last of the tomatoes and lettuce and peppers yesterday ... but we still have squash and cucumbers and radishes! (This veggie report has been brought to you by yours truly, heh heh heh heh.) My wonderful DH took today off (yay) ... but now he's got a really busy stretch ahead. He's scheduled to fly most days/evenings, and he has to work on Saturday and Sunday, too. My plan is to get some drawers and cupboards cleaned out and organized this week -- plus I'm kitty sitting for a girlfriend Thurs-Fri-Sat and Sunday. I might pick up some more flowers for the front yard, and I might get some trees trimmed this week, too. With sunshine and 80 degree weather, it's a bit hard to know how much stuff to do in the yard and when the cooler weather will REALLY arrive, ya know?

Saraimay ... what's the subject of your Hawaiian Studies paper? I had to write a reaction to one of the articles that we read for our class. The article I choose was called: Dynamics of production intensification in precontact Hawaii, it was all about how the Hawaiians produced great amount of food for themselves. Especilly through the fishponds which the built and created. Hawaiians produced enough food so that they did not need to depend on the outside world. They knew how to treat and had great respect the land. Over time Hawaii became dependent on the outside world because the land was taken up by buildings. I pointed out that if we just move more toward how the Hawaiians used to treat the land with respect and used it for farms we would not be so dependent on the outside world which would make food much cheaper/

I've never been to Hawaii, but it's on my list for sure! I went to get my hair "trimmed" last night. My hair is very wavy/curly and once the haircut I just got started to grow out a bit, it got a little bushy and was requiring way more time to tame than I was comfortable with. SO, I called ahead and made sure the girl who cut it initially would be there, got there and of course, she was out. The manager told me she had a car accident (she wasn't injured but she's pregnant) and was sore all over from the impact, so she's going to be out for at least a week. Instead of just walking out and coming back when she was available. . . I let the manager cut it. She did a really great job, until she got out the razor. I don't hate it, but the look on dh's face when he saw it made me sad, that's for sure. She really razored it A LOT. The best thing my dearest could say about it was. . . "Well, it doesn't look like it did before, that's all." Oh well, it's just hair.

Re "niggle"... Would you believe that I studied Tolkien's short story "Leaf by Niggle" in university, and we never discussed the meaning of the word? I just thought it was his name. But now that I know what it means, it gives more depth to the story. The teacher was European though; he may have assumed we knew what it meant. In yet another example of Canada's ultra-efficient single-tier system, a clinic in Toronto is charging much $$ for the shot and letting people get it by appointment (ie no lineups). It's free everywhere else. Now, if the govt were in charge of it and were absorbing the costs, and only allowing people who can't stand in line (ie high-risk people with disabilities) it would make sense. Sometimes I think Canada should just officially move over to a two-tier system; we're already there unofficially. Well, I am back at work after three days off caring for DH post-operation (five days total, since I was working my butt off Sat/Sun), and I am exhausted. I will never again say that I do most of the housework, because now I know how much there is to do when DH can't do any of it! I had to scold him for trying to carry laundry for me (lower back operation; NO LIFTING; stubborn man). This the day after he hurt his back making the bed. Poor guy. So now I'm at work and hoping for a more relaxing day. Now I understand why colleagues are happy to come to work sick when they have toddlers at home!

Some men can be stubborn, can't they? John was the same after he had shoulder surgery. He would wash dishes, vacuum, try and get dinner ready. Were forever telling him that he wasn't supposed to be doing all that stuff.

Would you believe when I was reading to my son last night, the word niggle was in it! Good thing I read this thread or I don't know what I would have done, lol. My hubby is going to school this week, to get his occupational first aid certificate. He is feeling overwhelmed with all the reading and stuff he has to learn. He is a slow reader, so that makes it tough. Didn't help that he did his reading in bed, I'm sure. lol.

Quick prayer request for my hubby, he's having sinus surgery tomorrow. It's outpatient, but still... BIL is dropping him off, and I'm picking him up with the kids in tow. Should be interesting.

Good morning, Chatterboxes!!! It's a beautiful sunshiney morning here in central California and we're heading for highs in the low 80s today and for the next few days. We've currently got a pair of scampering squirrels foraging in the backyard, and I know that there will be one or two planting peanuts in my front lawn before the day is through. The kitties (who tend to be fairly active in the mornings) are starting to disappear into slumberland, but I can see a few here and there watching birds/squirrels out the windows or from the open-air Catios. And we've got some especially twittery birds out there this morning, too. Tuesdays are generally peaceful around here, until the City's giant garbage trucks come rumbling and screeching down the street, picking up trash. I've never quite figured out why they roar down the block just to slam on the brakes with loud screeches! Anyway, they usually don't make it to our block until 11am or so for the first truck (green waste), then we see the recycle trucks about an hour later (recycleables), and finally the actual garbage cans get empties after that. Some days I get ambitious and bring in our three trash cans from the curb one at a time (to make things easy and less cluttered for the mail man), other days I just wait for all three cans to be ready to come in. Since it's so nice out today, I will probably jump on three opportunities to venture out front. (Though I was out there twice already .... once to feed Limpy Cat and once to donate our cans/bottles to the teenager who rummages through everyone's recyclable container on the block -- he's paying for community college so we've been saving and bagging our cans/bottles for him.) I got a phone call this morning from the Monterey Bay Aquarium... seems that they've received my membership renewal check but I forgot to actually SIGN IT. Ooops. The lady on the phone was really nice about the whole thing, and we're fixing this mistake, but I do feel rather silly about this. Hmmm.... I must have been rather distracted the day I wrote out that check, huh? I wonder if I've ever done that with checks for bills and they've just accepted them, anyway? This is the first time this has ever happened to me -- that I know of, that is! Oh well .... no harm, no foul, I suppose ... right? Well, our annual property tax bill (which arrives on Halloween each year -- who planned that?) has now been paid. I always wait for it to get here so I can get the thing paid, but it takes such a large chunk out of our savings account that I always have mixed feelings about paying it. Still, I do appreciate roads and parks and sewer systems and traffic lights and police officers and fire fighters and schools, so I try to be cheeful when I send in my taxes. (The key word there is TRY, lol!) Get well wishes and prayers for all the recovering people mentioned in this thread!!!

Our property taxes come out of escrow, but it is always a bit disturbing to look at the mortgage history statements. We do it 2x a year - once the month the taxes should be paid and once at tax time. Otherwise I just keep track that our payments are being made on the mortgage. Harvie, how is Limpy cat doing? Any more possums (or other nocturnal wildlife) stealing his food? And what are your ave temps this time of year? I can't really imagine 80s into Nov. Though a few years ago Mark and I were walking on the beach up here the first weekend of Nov barefoot wishing we had worn shorts. And 2 years ago we went to the local chili cook-off and ate chili in 80+ degree weather. Both of those days felt very odd! Kris
