I like the word, it reminds me of giggle. But I would suggest that most Americans avoid the word to minimize the risk of getting embroiled in racial controversy, possible misunderstandings, or hurt feelings? Remember last year when the news was filled with stories about some politician who used the term "niggardly" (which means stingy) and some people thought the word had racist/racial overtones because it's very similar to the "N" word?

Or maybe I'm just getting paranoid.... but I thought it was worth a mention. Like I said, I like the word and think it's nifty to learn new ones.

Well, we can just file it away somewhere in our vocabulary, but not have to use it. Over here, there are no racial connotations to it.

How about Christmas irritations?

I saw in our church bulletin that Christmas choir sign-ups are starting to take place. The first practice would be this Wednesday. I sooooo want to do this but I may not this year because I've got lots of other stuff on my plate. I looove to take part in Christmas and Easter productions at church. Something about lights, camera, action, the stage, lots of people, the whole Christmas/Easter scene/music that come just really makes the holidays real for me. Otherwise, I get caught up in all of the commercialism of it like lots of ppl I know.

I moderate another forum and one poster kept reporting everytime she saw some poster write IMHO (which is an abbreviation for In My Humble Opinion) ... she thought that the posters where claiming to be prostitutes. I was literally shrieking with laughter once I figured out why she kept reporting all those posts!

I've had problems with being blocked for perfectly normal, non-swear words.

I dropped J home around 2pm today because he was sick. Our neighbours across the road were having their first open house. And the neighbours next door were going ten to the dozen making all sorts of racket with their renovations. I'm wondering if that's going to impact their sales prospects.

Instead of Christmas (the other word I used earlier), I was going to change it to Christmas p*r*i*c*k*l*e*s, then thought that then I would get in trouble with CW instead of the general public. LOL. So, I think I'll just leave it at Christmas irritations.

Now that's funny. I remember having a post of mine blocked because the end of one word and the beginning of the next made a four-letter word (with a space in between). In chat, we used to amuse ourselves by asking which novel by Melville was about a whale... people would find themselves writing "Moby Richard."

don't know if they have changed it since a year ago when I would go to chat often, but in chat you used to not be able to say "sc*r*a*pbooking"...lol.

eta..ok, so you can't say it here either.

Harvie, I hope you are getting your shot today, and that the line isn't too long.

I am so light-hearted today. The 10-month old baby girl isn't here today (she's sick) and I am finding the day going by so much more smoothly. I'm pondering this hmmmm.

My 11-year old had to come home sick, and had to walk because I couldn't leave to come and get him. I don't think he's really sick, so I didn't mind letting him walk .

Hubby and I are deciding what to do with Christmas this year. We're not having a tree inside anyway, thanks to Aaron - I'm sure anything we decorated it with would just end up all over the house.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what I want to study... I have to decide soon because I have to ask the professor and register. I was going to do something with HPV, because I'm intrigued by how some forms of it work (it doesn't cause cancer, but degrades the gene that can signal an abnormal cell to die...so that if cells become abnormal, they cannot shut off). Now I'm thinking I might want to do something with cancer.

Ofa, I love Christmas programs. I missed it those years when I couldn't sing in stuff... But it's a lot of work with extra rehearsals for us.

Home again today (DH had surgery Thursday so I'm home to take care of him and drive him to appointments). Just got in from raking the leaves. DH felt all guilty about not being able to do them, but hey, it's the first exercise I've gotten in days, and it's a gorgeous, sunny, fall-smelling day out!

Had to LOL at our backyard neighbour's golden retriever; he barked at me through fence until I went over and said hello and let him sniff my hand. Some guard dog he'd make.

I used to joke that my dogs back home would invite a robber in for tea if they could figure out how to use the stove. Until we started taking the Peanuts for rides in their stroller...then I realized that you don't want to mess with them. Not as aggressive as Elektra, but still effective.

BTW, she won't go outside to use the bathroom when it's raining. It's been raining since Friday and will continue until at least Wednesday. Luckily it pauses every once in a while.

Good grief - of course there aren't !!! ROFLOL!!!

Brit English and Aussie English are DEFFO closer in this area - "niggle" is a much-used and valuable part of our vocabulary over here, just as it is over there!!

(Online sources reckon it's of Scandinavian origin, round about the end of the 1500s and beginning of the the 1600s - amazing!! From a Norwegian word, nigla - I find that fascinating!)

I think I am going to have to start using it a lot more on these forums, to get people used to it!

OK .... I just spent 4.5 hours getting the H1N1 flu vaccine. That would be 2 hours in the car, 2.5 hours in line, and about 2 minutes getting the shot. After driving an hour through what looked like desolate wasteland (the agricultural water has been shut off for westside farmers), we arrived at the location of the Vaccine Clinic in the teeny-tiny town of Firebaugh. (Population is less than 5,000.) We arrived at 10:30am for the 1:00pm clinic, and there were easily 50 people in line in front of us. As the magic 1:00pm hour approached, we discovered that each of the 50 people camped in front of us were (apparently) holding spaces in the line for the remaining population of Firebaugh, and within a span of a few minutes I went from being about 50th in line to being about 250th in line. Ahhhh .... the things we do in the midst of pandemics, huh?

But, a miracle occurred! At about 20 minutes from when they began (T minus 20 and counting) they actually divided us up into TWO lines .... one line for people with children and one line for just adults. YAY! That actually put me at 12th in the adults only line!!! Woooo hooooooo! They handed me the world's longest form to read and sign, and then I marched inside, got a quick jab in my left arm, and we were OUTTA THERE!!! YAY! I get shots all the time in my stomach (bigger ones), so one quick little jab in the arm was no biggie. We grabbed a carne asada burrito at a local Taqueria, hit the road, and came home.

What did surprise me was the number of people who wanted to argue with the staff from the Health Department about whether or not they qualified for the H1N1. At these clinics, for these first limited doses that are available, they are only giving the H1N1 shots to people on the CDC priority list: pregnant women, children 6 month to 24 years old, and people 24-64 with specific chronic health conditions (asthma, emphysema, cerebral palsy, MS, diabetes, etc.) There were a number of senior citizens over 65 who were incensed and screaming/cursing about being denied the shot, as well as some healthy adults in the 25-64 age group. I could hear the clinic staff asking where the local cops were and if there would be security!

Anyway, I got my shot and I'm greatly relieved.

Me, too .... and I was grateful that my wonderful DH was willing to use a vacation day to trek me across the valley and stand in line with me. I'm now sitting here wondering where the whole day went, though! We were actually relieved that we got to stand in line in the shade since it will be 80 degrees here all week.

Saraimay ... what's the subject of your Hawaiian Studies paper?
