I was reading about Delta landing on the taxiway and NW overflying their destination when this thought came to me. Can you imagine the conversation between the FAA and the flight crew?

(Shamelessly stolen from the Blues Brothers movie.)

Captain Jake: Oh, please, don't revoke our licenses. Please, please don't revoke them. You know we didn't do it intentionally. It wasn't our fault.
Mystery Woman from the FAA: You miserable slug! You think you can talk your way out of this? You lied to me! You pig!
Jake: No I didn't. Honest... The radios went inop. I, I spilled my coffee in my lap. The flight attendant distracted us when she came up to drop off the napkins. My seatbelt got caught in my zipper. The FMS lost its position. There was cockpit fog. Windshear. Wake turbulence. Migratory waterfowl. IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD.
[FO Elwood covers his head in anticipation of more shouting, Capt. Jake removes his sunglasses to make a wordless appeal, and the Mystery Woman from the FAA visibly softens]
Mystery Woman from the FAA: Oh, Jake... Jake, honey...
[Capt. Jake embraces the Mystery Woman from the FAA and they kiss]
Capt Jake: [to FO Elwood] Let's go.
[He drops the Mystery Woman from the FAA and walks off]
Capt. Elwood: [to the Mystery Woman from the FAA as he steps past her] Take it easy.
Mystery Woman from the FAA: 120 day suspension!

"Two Northwest Airlines pilots have told federal investigators that they were going over schedules using their laptop computers in violation of company policy while their plane overflew their Minneapolis destination by 150 miles..."AP article

I guess they missed the announcement to turn off all electronics for landing....

I'm not buying the "going over schedules" line....

to the OP... when I heard about this I asked good friend who is a commercial pilot. He said that some airports might be confusing to land, but Atlanta isn't one of them and all the major airports have multiple, multiple indications of where the runway center is.... He also told me that the tower is not in a position to visually catch this kind of error.

For the pilots who overflew their destination? That one is baffling.

I can understand the schedule checking. We have to make sure we are legal to fly in a rolling 24 hr period and 30 hrs in a rolling 7 day window based on scheduled flight time. Then you also need to make sure the rest period is legal based on how many hours you have flown and are scheduled to fly in the 24 hr and 7 day periods. You can also be scheduled for a reduced rest but must start you compensatory rest 25 hrs after the start of the last rest period. If there are problems this may take a while. Often we cross check each other to help make sure we aren't violating a federal regulation.

Then there are contractual limits as well. Although at the smaller regional airlines these don't provide much protection to ensure adequate rest.

I can believe it.

I think there is something more to this issue than failure to notice your PFD, and I have used the more elementary GPS in the stuff I do. I don't thing the problem is so much the flying over your destination. The REAL problem to this as far as I'm concerned is that you have blatantly ignored ATC. Keep in mind, I'm just with the virtual ATC goup and they kinda consider themselves a sort of elite group. I've talked to a couple of them and gone to the website as well. I mean their own websites other than the forum. It sure impresses me. I've told them so and left comments.
When I first got on, there was a lot of traffic. I might have asked for a clearance delivery maybe, and they ignored me. That's their prerogative for whatever reason. Therefore, I simply continue to sit there. They have alot of things on their plate perhaps. I've heard these guys rattle off stuff so fast that I couldn't quite get or just went completely over my head. In that case, I've just sat on the ground and listen in. I still do that. The first time they did call me it was like a nervous jolt or something. I wanted to try and say the right thing and not sound like a noob. They weren't fooled.
But let's say you're flying along at FL290 and you have indeed missed something and ATC calls out, "RoCk234 you are entering my airspace" or Rock234 what are your intentions?" or something like that. And I or you just ignore them? That's how they see it. Or maybe there were other sounds going on in your cockpit, so we'll just do it again. It's not like tower has other planes in the air to manage. So, "ROCK234 have you on radar, please respond."...
hmm. "RoCk234 squawk 4554." You just keep ignoring them. "Rock234 you are leaving my airspace(?) DO YOU COPY!" ..Nothing.
I would rather say "Tower, Rock234, hdg. 240 flight level 290, I have absolutely no clue as to my position" rather than COMPLETELY IGNORE them. So would they.

Actually the taxiway was just a couple of hundred feet away and parallel to the runway. Atlanta-Hartsfield International

I saw that and it kinda reminded me of LAX.

I'll say that they were sure concentrating when they were landing on the taxiway. Here's one night shot of a guy on base before he makes the left turn on final. He sure looks close to me unless he's in a smaller plane or something. The vasi he's talking about is that row of four red lights you see to the left. All 4 are red, so it would be a good idea not to lose anymore altitude on that final turn. Those blue clusters of lights you see over to the right are taxiway lights. You see some to the far left, and look close to the ones crossing over in the middle of the picture as well.
Actually there are two pictures there. You might already be seeing the one on final. You click on the other one for the base leg which he is already at the end of, as far as I can see.

I guess that's Dehavilland and not the bombardier thing. But anyways, they must have really wanted to get closer to where emergency vehicles or something might be able to get to them quicker after they land. There was a "medical emergency" on board. However, unless both pilots are unconcious and some passenger like me is landing, that idea won't fly either. All they could do is take away a license I don't have. That's academic because I wouldn't have the nerve to try such a thing on a taxiway.
