And I'm so excited! It's gonna be on ABC, starting November 3rd, at 8. Anybody else remember this show?

I used to watch this show. Should be interesting to see what they do with this remake. Hope it's good.

The original creeped me out when I was young.

I think the idea is still great (aliens who promise peace but are actually diabolical lizards!), and am very interested in seeing how it will be updated to 2009 standards of cinematography and special effects.

I wasn't sure if this was the same show or not. I liked it but it did creep me out some, I have to admit and I was not a kid when I watched it. I'll be curious to see how it plays out too.

I loved the original, I hope they don't ruin it with this remake, but they probably will.

Did you know that it's a Nazi allegory?

quote:

Series creator Kenneth Johnson has said that the story was inspired by the 1935 novel It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis. Also, several scenes from the original TV pilot resemble the Bertolt Brecht play The Private Life of the Master Race. A short story by Damon Knight entitled To Serve Man (later adapted into an episode of The Twilight Zone) had a similar theme of deceptively friendly aliens secretly cultivating humans for food.

In a commentary track on the DVD release of the mini-series, Johnson reveals that V was originally intended as a straightforward political thriller, charting the rise of a fascist movement in the United States. However, NBC wanted a sci-fi hit, to capitalize on the success of films such as Star Wars.

The story became a Nazi allegory, right down to the Swastika-like emblem used by the Visitors and their SS-like uniforms. There is a youth auxiliary movement called the "Friends of the Visitors" with obvious similarities to the Hitler Youth, and Visitor broadcasts mimic Nazi-era propaganda. The show's portrayal of human interaction with the Visitors bears a striking resemblance to stories from Occupied Europe during World War II with some citizens choosing collaboration and others choosing to join underground resistance movements.

Where the Nazis persecuted primarily Jews, the Visitors were likewise depicted to persecute scientists, their families, and anyone associating with them. They also distribute propaganda in an effort to hide their true identity. Some of the main characters in the initial series were from a Jewish family and the grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, frequently commented on the events of the past again unfolding. Once they are in a position to do so, the Visitors later declare martial law to control the scientists (and resistance fighters) as well.

Isn't V the show where the actor who does Freddy Kruger played a "good" alien lizard?

I remember the show...very well...saw every last episode.

I'm looking forward to this show. And yes I do hope they show the "Visitors" eating mice again! Hey back in the day, that was juicy!

Was it a mouse or a hamster? I don't know that I need to see that again, but I definitely am looking forward to seeing how they bring this show back!

I vaguely remembered the show, but I don't think we watched it. Not the kind of show my parents would enjoy, and they controlled what we watched back then. There's a very good synopsis of the old show on Wikipedia.

Something like that...she was endlessly undressing regardless

And she wore that funky red uniform and stilletos that looked pretty silly.

The moral of that story is DO NOT TRUST ALIENS EVEN THOUGH THEY LOOK LIKE ABSURDLY ATTRACTIVE HUMAN WOMEN.

I remember watching and loving V - the original mini-series, and then V: The Final Battle. I was a big fan! I even read many of the novels based on the series. I recently saw the preview for the new series, and it looks good - I'm looking forward to it. HisSweetGypsyRose mentioned that the original two mini series' were an allegory for the battle for freedom from Nazi-like oppressors, and even though I never read that in any interviews by the producer, I definitely picked up on that. I'm hoping they keep that focus in the new series, even though it will be updated with new special effects, etc...

And doinkdom, yes, that's where Robert Englund (of Nightmare on Elm Street fame) played Willie, the good alien...

I'm really nervous about checking out this show. The original creeped me out that much. I don't remember many specifics because I was so young, but I do remember the alien birth. Still gives me shivers just thinking about it.

I don't think I've ever watched this show before. but I can't help thinking that it'll be like the The Twilight Zone episode, where the aliens helped out the human race, because they wanted to have us for dinner !!!

That's about it :)

Syfy channel has been playing V: The Final Battle. It's actually pretty well done for the time it was made. I'm willing to give the remake a try and see how they do.

I'm watching it right now, and it's pretty good. Very well done.

I read some interesting reviews of the show:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-v3-2009nov03,0,3694223.story

I also ran across this V fan site: http://thevisitors.info/

I think they've done a great job updating this new show, and it looks like the creator of the original series, Kenneth Johnson, is back on this one as well.

Watched the episode last night and loved it. I was a little surprised that they revealed so quickly that the Visitors are really lizard creatures covered in cloned human flesh, but in a way I'm glad that some of the characters already know so they can join the resistance. Apparently the FBI agent didn't hit her alien co-worker hard enough because they showed him coming back in the previews. I especially like her and the priest.

I keep wondering, what is the deal with all that blinking Anna does? At first I thought she was flirting with the reporter, but at the end they showed her standing in the ship by herself doing it. Are her contacts bothering her or something?

I was a fan of the original miniseries, and thought that the revamp was pretty good...good enough to keep me watching.

Liked:
All pretty competent actors
Anna
The thinly-veiled references to this previous year's US political reality
Bringing in the "rebel" aliens early on
The resistance "purity test" (although, it was gross)
The sleeper-alien FBI agent twist reveal early on

Disliked
Using the "V" and the "tagging" (ie, the spray paint V) for being pro-Visitor
Dropping the Holocaust connection
Read this elsewhere on the web, but on reflection I agree - more of the resistance characters in the original were "common man" types that rose up to build the resistance, whereas most that we've seen so far in the new version are at least somewhat authority figures (priest, FBI agent, etc.)

Not sure
How the relationships between the resistance characters, and between the resistance and the rebel aliens, will develop
This version's "Robin" - the FBI agent's son, and I hope that if there is the inevitable hybrid, that it's no wonder child

Well, according to E!Online, the ratings were good. Not better than CBS, but best debut of new fall show good.
