I don't think I said unGodly.

However, I do not see any benefit, edification, character-building in enjoying or participating in make believe slaughter, make believe witchery, make believe terrorizing of others....

So, it's not for us.

Thought to add--I find many of the costumes for women and girls extremely distasteful. 'Cause sex-and-gore sells a lot better than just plain old gore, it seems. Sexy devil, sexy witch, sexy fairy, sexy pirate, sexy vampire, sexy Greek goddess, sexy police officer...

We dress up and get candy, but I do agree with this statement. I mean, if a wife wants to buy something for use in private that's one thing, but I'm not fond of a lot of those costumes either.

I always did enjoy the one day we got to go to school in costume, though. I made a kickin' Red Riding Hood.

I just ignore it. Actually, I can't even remember the date as it's passed me by in the last few years ! My Mum gets a pumkin in and cooks it, that's as far as she goes. I don't see why so many have to be pro or anti, I don't really notice it these days. What exactly is being 'celebrated' anyway at halloween ?

Why just one day of the year ?? The UK is like that every weekend (happily, but also and more importantly - sadly)

Perhaps you should should check out the "Lust Is A Sin?" thread.

Seriously, I have nothing against Halloween as practiced by little children. I don't feel comfortable with a bunch of teenagers and/or adults running around neighborhoods with masks on.

Mrs. K and I typically go out to dinner and a movie on Halloween. She teaches second grade and is "Haloweened out" by the time the actual day arrives.

We don't participate in Halloween. Sometimes we'll go to an alternative, but I'm not crazy about them, either. This year my oldest two will be passing out campaign literature and the rest of us will be passing out tracts.

Interesting points. My reply would be if you ask me to clarify the beleif that horror / ghosts / usual Halloween stuff etc is ungodly, my only answer would be that there is NOTHING godly about any of it to start with. Even if families/people do celebrate it innocently, It still promotes a side we don't belong to. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an extreme anti-halloweener, I just don't see the POINT of us as Christians taking part in it. I think a lot of parents simply feel a pressure because their kids freinds want to join in. Just MHO.

I personally don't feel pressured at all to celebrate Halloween. I celebrated it before my children came around and I will celebrate it after they leave. I'm the one who decorates my house, I'm the one who bakes the bat cookies, I'm the one who passes out candy dress like a princess, I'm the one who goes to haunted houses with my girlfriends, I'm the one who watches scary movies with my buddies...not my children.

They could care less about the holiday except for the candy. Even then we don't do a lot with candy...a lot of times it will still be there the following year. *shrug*

IMO...you get what you put into it. We have fun with it. Then it's over and I put away my illuminated ghost and dressed up kitty cat and pull out the turkeys and pilgrims for Thanksgiving. After that holiday I put all that stuff away and get out my menorah and Christmas tree.

This basically sums up my previous attitude on the subject. I grew up being taught it was akin to "worship of the dark side" Then, my church decided some years ago to provide an alternative to trick-or-treating by offering activities and free candy to the kids on that night. Got me to thinking.....

My husband takes the little one trick-or-treating and we have a home this year so I guess I'll pass out candy . It's what you make it.

I am put off by demon masks, gore, murder and the like.....

I
HALLOWEEN

I always celebrated as a kid, dressed up every year and went trick or treating and look at me now, i am a well adjusted, Bible believing, lover of God. I didn't turn out to be a serial killer, or mugger, or criminal, or atheist, or devil follower, or any of the things that people told my parents i would become if i celebrated halloween. i celebrated it for the fun that it is, and not something sinister.

on the other hand, i grew up with several people whose parents did not let them celebrate halloween, (or listen to secular music, or go to public school, or do anything that 'looked' unholy) and some of them turned out to have children out of wedlock, some of them left the faith, some of them went completely the opposite direction from their upbringing....and it's not all negative, some of them are still Christians who now let their kids celebrate. (although, they still inspect apples for razor blades. some legends, you just can't let go of. )

That's cool, your Church offering alternatives for the kids is great. They can still have fun not running around as mini-satans.
I think it's good to do something different, or offer something different. I just so happen to not even realise it's happened usually ! (people
stay indoors a lot here and I live in an appartement).
My question for those Christians who do take part quite fully, - what are you actually celebrating ? At other holidays, we celebrate stuff, whatever your stance is on the symbolism and historical accuracy - birth of Jesus, Jesus rising from death etc. I guess what I'm trying to ask is - whats the reason for celebrating it ?

I'm not really celebrating anything. *shrug* Do I have to be celebrating something to have fun?

I guess I'm celebrating my enjoyment of bat cookies, dressing up and having fun. And it's a good time to scare myself silly.

I could, but it's more fun when I'm not the only participant.

And my cookies ARE tasty! I'll post pics of them when I make them.

I like to use Halloween as a way mini-outreach time and also as a time to educate others. It's a false belief that Halloween originally started out as a demonic day-- if you look into its history, it was a day about making fun of things that were scary, or making fun of the pagan beliefs that we ought to be afraid of shadows and things that go bump in the night. What I usually do is help out other adults from church when they have Halloween-things going on at their homes or at the church. Everything we indulge in is clean, tasteful, and safe. We teach the kids that it's all fun and games, and that it's not real.

Unfortunately I cannot speak for the people who take something that started out as innocent fun who make it a ghastly and gruesome day. And personally, I don't feel the need to defend them on my part-- why should I? I'm not the one wearing a sexy something costume, or pretending to stab something with my knife with fake blood, or participate in terrorizing schemes. Last year for Halloween, all I can remember doing was ogling the little babies and toddlers who would go out with their cute pumpkin, tiger, teddy bear, and ballerina costumes on while their parents had a chance to hang out and chat as they got candy and went for car rides. (shrugs). Just my personal opinion.

Next thing we know, the mere action of cutting a pumpkin open to make a pie will be construed as ghastly and pagan for Thanksgiving...

Interesting perspective here...

quote:

Can I Change Your Mind About Halloween?
Julie Ferwerda - Crosswalk.com Contributing Writer

If you want to throw a nice wholesome party on Halloween including nice wholesome costumes… hey, why not? What's the harm when your motives (and behaviors) are exemplary? Might even be a good witness. People can observe Christians having good, clean fun especially when churches offer alternative celebrations for their members and community.

That's all what I used to think.

To be honest, I really don't care much about the pagan origins of Halloween in ages past. It's not like most of us are even aware of them, and what do they really have to do with current times? Not exactly a motivating reason to change my lifestyle. But what I have come to care about is what Halloween stands for now, based on a few of my own observations:

In every neighborhood of every town of every state of our country during this celebrated week (and a few other countries as well), you'll find dark, scary decorations. Big hairy spiders in webs, hideous green witches donned in black, skeletons, haunted houses, coffins, bats… nothing is too dark or too evil to display. And don't forget the sweet little kids dressed as Grim Reapers, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and Freddy Kruegers.

Type "Halloween Crimes News" into Google, and you’ll get 349,000 results. There's a huge influx in alcohol and drug related revelry and crime that police departments far and wide refer to as "pandemonium," requiring increased police reinforcement.[1]

That's cool, it's great to take and use that opportunity. I agree totally with that kind of approach. My concern is that for some, it seems to encourange them to get into the darker side of it, and make light of forces that are actually exisiting. Many freinds get together and will have a night in watching the omen or the exorcist, it takes the edge off stuff that we perhaps should not be seeing, and they seem to hunger for it even more.
I do agree that people can be waaay to hyper analytical though, there's nothing wrong with pumpkin ! Yummy.

Interesting how someone was kind enough to paste some key verses from God's eternal and authoratative word and then there's a line of comments by others that instead lean on what "they think", lol. So much for surrendering to the Lordship of Christ, lol. Hey guys, I know God says this over here, but since my heart isn't deceitful and desparately wicked, let me just tell you what I think about it. I mean, what the harm, it's all innocent! My neighbors and Letterman might use it as ammunition...please stop with the Jesus stuff..they might make fun of me!

Cmon people..are you surrendered and living for the Lord, or is this still about "you" and what "you" think? Father, help us to submit to Your plan, Your Son and Your infinite wisdom, that we might be a holy people, set apart for your purposes and not falling into all kinds of deception. Help us to take ourselves more lightly and You more seriously, instead of the opposite. In Jesus name. amen.
