Oh, Judy. I am so sorry. That is sickening. I cannot imagine the sorrow the family is going through. It sounds like a dangerous crossing and that no one was at fault. We had a crossing like that in our city, but it was a city bus stop on a four lane road with a turn lane. The speed limit was 40mph. When a bus would drop people off in the dark, cars could not see them. There were several fatalities. This is common sense stuff. People need a safe way to cross and there should be adaquate lighting at crossings.

Judy, I'm so sorry. Praying.

Shadow, you are welcome to drive up north and meet Gypsy anytime you like. If our collective sanity shows up by then, bring it along.

Judy--I'm so sorry.

Cindy--I think my sanity is long gone, never to be seen again.

I have a 13yo who is 'bout to drive me insane. He waits until I'm in the middle of a crisis to ask for help. When I tell him to wait, he then tells dh that I'm "never available". I had hoped that the xbox becoming and ex-box would help. So far it's not.

Not sure exactly what my plans are for tomorrow, but in less than 24hrs, I"M OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hoping to meet up with friends at the marathon registration before heading to Melissa's. I can't wait!!!

His, your 13 yo is being manipulative. I wonder where he learned that. You are putting a stop to it, right?

Cindy, I am learning how to deal with manipulation and would like to know how other people handle certain situations. Would you please explain exactly what you would do regarding His' situation with her son? It is very helpful to learn from real life situations and I could use as much information as I can get on this subject.

In the moment, I would simply tell him that this is really bad timing.

Later, when things have settled down, I would sit down with him and say that I wanted to talk about what happened. I would ask him to describe what was going on at the time from his point of view. For instance:

Kid: I needed help with my math.
Mom: Did you notice what I was doing at the time?
Kid: You were cleaning up after the dog puked all over the kitchen.
Mom: Explain to me why you thought that was a good time to ask me about your math.
Kid: Ummm . . . well . . . I needed help!

I would then explain that demanding attention no matter what is selfishness. Deliberately choosing a time when he knew he wouldn't get what he needed is setting himself up for failure and allowing himself to feel like a victim. Going to dad and complaining that mom wouldn't help after making sure he chose a time when she couldn't is called manipulation. They are all very childish behaviors and will not be tolerated.

And then I would hold his feet to the fire. I would call him on it every time he tried to manipulate me, because if I allow him to reach adulthood without doing my level best to stop this behavior, I am doing both him and his future wife a great disservice. I am a bit sensitive on this issue, because I deal with WAY too many toddlers walking around in adult male bodies.

We've had a fun day here! Melissa felt well enough (finally!) to go out and get some errands done, so she treated me to lunch and we hit Tractor Supply. Kids did pumpkins, and then Melissa's dh took them trick or treating. His Chosen arrived a bit after six, and we've just been hanging out and chatting. I'm also working, but I've been able to visit between calls. They are all ditching me now, though - they seem to think they should sleep or something. I have to work till 7am, but I have a cozy fire and coffee and various cats and dogs who wander through to keep me company.
