I do wonder if telling children the truth doesn't so much spoil their Christmases as spoil the Christmases of the adults who are still trying to perpetuate "magic" in their own lives through their children.

*shrug*
To me the "magic" of Christmas has always been Christ and his birth. Santa was just fun. That's all the "deeper" I've ever gone with it, even growing up believing in Santa. If we decide to lie to our children about Santa, it will be just for fun, too.

Me?

Start something?

* looks innocent, adjusts halo *

For the record, I think Saint Patrick is my favorite saint (389-460 AD) ... (and I love the prayer he wrote, called the Breastplate of Saint Patrick)

I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity:
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

I bind to myself today
The virtue of the Incarnation of Christ with His Baptism,
The virtue of His crucifixion with His burial,
The virtue of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
The virtue of His coming on the Judgement Day.
...
I bind to myself today
God's Power to guide me,
God's Might to uphold me,
God's Wisdom to teach me,
God's Eye to watch over me,
God's Ear to hear me,
God's Word to give me speech,
God's Hand to guide me,
God's Way to lie before me,
God's Shield to shelter me,
God's Host to secure me,
Against the snares of demons,
Against the seductions of vices,
Against the lusts of nature,
Against everyone who meditates injury to me,
Whether far or near,
Whether few or with many.

I invoke today all these virtues
Against every hostile merciless power
Which may assail my body and my soul,
Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black laws of heathenism,
Against the false laws of heresy,
Against the deceits of idolatry,
Against the spells of women, and smiths, and druids,
Against every knowledge that binds the soul of man.

Christ, protect me today
Against every poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against death-wound,
That I may receive abundant reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
Christ in the fort,
Christ in the chariot seat,
Christ in the sloop.

Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of an invocation of the Trinity,
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

I think I'm the only one here that has done a 360 (or is it a 90?) on Christmas as a whole. If I have future children I fully intend to be truthful to them and then have them think about and discuss what they think.

LOL!! But actually I don't talk a lot in real time; I type a lot, but I don't talk a lot. I can quite happily go for hours without saying anything to anyone, and have many times when I really don't want to have to talk at all. I sometimes "hide" in the high street, or in Tescos, rather than have to talk to someone when I don't feel like it.

Hi Harvie!

First, let me say that this is my conviction and a personal choice and in no way would I judge anyone else ok?

Christmas for me has changed dramatically for several reasons. It's not just a Santa or no Santa thing. From I what understand, Jesus was actually born sometime in October, very close to around Sukkot. So begins the process of celebrating His birthday during that time. And there are traditions about Christmas (the tree, the log, etc...) that are actually pagan in history and meaning. Somewhere along the line we have adopted those traditions and have integrated them into our families during Christmas time and into Christianity. I basically took this information and made a personal decision to change the way I celebrate traditions. In no way do I see it as a salvation issue or in no way do I see it as detrimental for others. Just a choice. Hope that helps.

YUP...the Bible is pretty clear about that since it says that the shepherds were "in the field" and the only time they would be in the field would be right after the harvest was brought in. So Oct time frame fits that well.

lol. Am I a suspenful poster?

As for His birth, I do acknowledge it during the Feast of Sukkot (The Tabernacles). I attend a Messianic congregation we celebrate all the biblical Feasts. I plan to listen to the good Christmas music at this time...mostly the ones that only focus on Jesus.

As for during December, we do celebrate with the congregation Hanukkah. Interestingly enough, Hanukkah is the one time of the year when Jews exchange gifts to each other. During all the other Feasts, your "gift" is given to G-d, whether it's a physical gift or simply the giving of "yourself". What Christmas teaches as giving to others, Hanukkah teaches the same. I don't do a tree. I do celebrate with my family though. No one else has stopped celebrating Christmas and besides, my parents are culturally Japanese Buddhists. LOL They just grew up with Christmas, regardless if they are believers or not because that's what American's do (in their mindset). While the rest of my family is celebrating Christmas, I'm just celebrating family, giving to others and Hanukkah.

Huh. I've never known a kid who couldn't tell the difference between Santa and Jesus.

One of my husband's good friends daughter just came to Christ a few months back...right after her dad led her in a prayer for salvation she asked about Santa's 'omniscience' and he had to break it to her that (1) Santa wasn't real and (2) Santa wasn't all knowing...

Santa Claus, but he'll be kept strictly fictional.

Both my girls know who Santa Claus is but they also know that he's make believe and doesn't actually bring presents to them or other children and that the reason for Christmas is the fantastic and amazing gift of the Lord for all humanity.

That helps a lot .... thanks!

By the way, we don't celebrate Christmas in our home.

A local Anglican vicar told us that he'd been invited to a playgroup (kindergarten) in our town for their Christmas party, and had been asked to give the children a brief talk about Christmas. The first thing he did was ask them a question, which was "Whose birthday do we celebrate at Christmas?"
And the reply came loud and clear: "Santa's!"

No Santa Claus, Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy in our house. I probably follow a similar philosophy to Sarah on this topic, having seen it go in a bad direction and not wanting that for our children.

I have a new topic, one that's been bugging me for a while - the issue of the media portraying that you cannot be an artistic man without being gay. To give two examples -
* An ad here in Australia where a grandmother and her grandchild are discussing a new table the child's father/grandmother's son has put together. The grandmother makes a comment that the father has always been very talented and the child (all of about 8yo) pipes up with, "Yeah, Mum thinks he's gay."
*I was watching Design Star last night and one of the designers, a heterosexual man, was designing an office space for comedienne Kathy Griffin. For about five minutes, I suppose she thought she was being funny, Kathy Griffin harped on about how she wasn't sure she felt comfortable leaving design choices in the hands of a male designer who wasn't gay and how it just wasn't right that she lucked out and got the only straight male designer in the show.

Why is it OK to sexually discriminate against heterosexual men in this way and yet if the reverse were said regarding a gay man, there would be a huge uproar?

Kylie

I saw that episode too, and it really bugged me.

I wish I knew why some insist that only homosexuals can be artistic.

I don't care for Kathy Griffin at all.

I've never understood the whole issue. If a man is good at decorating/design why do some think they must be gay?

I've stopped even trying to make sense out of things after I got chastised in 2005 about complaining that a male employee was using the women's restroom and was told that he was allowed to do so because he was "considering" going through a sex change operation. I decide then and there that we live in an upside down world where what's wrong is now right and what used to be right is now wrong.

P.S. Kathy Griffin annoys me and I won't watch her.

It's also assumed that male hairstylists are gay. I went to cosmetology school with a number of them who weren't.
Male nurses are gay. Someone should tell my brother that.
