Heard at last Monday's performance in Bessemer of Ivan Parker and Brian Free & Assurance: Ivan said that when he was invited to sing with Gold City in the 80's, Brian Free was already singing tenor for them. Ivan took some of their CD's home for his wife to hear. Half way through the first song she said, "No way. You're not traveling with a MIXED GROUP!" By the way, Ivan and BF&A did a great job as always. Sorry that Garry Jones was ill and could not attend. Our best to him. Younger

Wheww....I'm glad that didn't turn out to be what I thought when I saw the thread title. I thought for a second that Brian had lost his mind and was considering making Assurance a mixed group!!!!

Focus. "Ivan" singing with a MIXED GROUP (as opposed to an all male quartet) was the concern. It had nothing to do with women singing southern gospel music ... which of course they have always done and very well indeed.

I can understand why Ivan's wife would not want him traveling with a mixed group. I wouldn't want MY wife to travel 200 days a year with a mixed group either. I totally understand why his wife would not want that. Too many things can happen when you mix men and women together who aren't married. A pastor that I listen to, has stated that he WILL NOT travel with a woman. I think that's a good principle to live by. Men and women who aren't married really have NO business traveling together.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? What planet do you live on? So every group with a woman in it, that is not married to a member should not be traveling with that group? So let's list those groups (according to you) who have "NO BUSINESS" traveling in their present arrangement. Not to mention the all male groups who have male members who are flirting with men or are having affairs with single women and other men's wives. How naive can you be? FOCUS! GospelDoc

My problem is with what appeared to be happening in the story. A woman traveling with a group of men. Now if within the group there are other women who can serve as accountibility partners, I'd have less problem. There is always the possibility of a problem when you have too much one on one contact with the opposite sex, when not married. I have seen it in my own work, where a man and woman would begin with having lunch together, and end up with broken homes.

Do you follow Southern Gospel Music at all? I could literally name a hundred groups with that configuration alone. So, a man and woman (married) have a group. They hire another woman and another man to make a quartet. The woman is not married but the man is. You think this arrangement is wrong and they have "NO BUSINESS" traveling together? What other arrangement is off limits? GospelDoc

ORIGINAL: tenorsister And if that were indeed the case then there are many great groups that would never have been on the road. Of course I do understand the reasoning but then that brings to question a decision based on faith and Christianity. Course I know of SG artists who have strayed and homes have been broken but not by other women in a group but rather just women on the road who follow the bus. And you can not just point your finger at women for misleading men for again it is a choice. Stand firm in your faith and convictions and this would not be an issue. JMO Yes Sister, very well said. I simply cannot let this one slide by. There are those who are straying, but we cannot lump all of these into one group. There are much more who keep their life in check. quote:
