billbaileybfafan -> More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/2/2009 10:51:10 PM)

I have been an SG fan for years, but never followed groups real closely, as far as who comes and goes. It's from that position of not knowing that I ask, are the recent departures we have seen from people leaving the SG industry the norm, or is it greater because of the economic condition the country is in? In the last few months we've seen:
Derrick Selph - going to school to be an electrician
Steve Ladd - going to work as a music leader, and presumably a full time job elsewhere
Eric Phillips - going into law enforcement.
These are all guys from the best of the best groups, and I assume along with that, some of the best paid. Is it a sign that groups are struggling, when guys in the upper echelon of SG music are leaving?

As a very close personal friend of Eric Phillips, I can say its not because MTT is struggling. Eric will tell you right up front that he is burnt out and needs a break. As he has stated before he has 2 passions, law enforcement and singing. He used to be a policeman in Asheville, NC before he started singing so he is going back to that passion. I wouldnt be surprised if you hear of Eric doing some solo stuff on his days off. [;)]
The road can wear you down physically and mentally.

Don't assume anything as far as this goes.

I'm not saying that they are rich, or are making tons of money, just that logically, the more popular a group, means bigger concerts, more album sales, and therefore, more money than groups that aren't as popular.

HigherNote4U -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/3/2009 10:31:25 AM)

I know....the groups do make more money, but that doesn't mean that the singers are getting it.

I understand what you are saying, but I would hope that groups are fair with their members as far as compensating them.

billbaileybfafan -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/3/2009 3:58:07 PM)

My prayer for these guys, and any that decide to leave a group is that they won't squander the talent God has blessed them with, but find a way to keep ministering.
I would think maybe starting your own local quartet/group would be an excellent way to keep ministering, yet not have the burden of the extensive travel. There is one group around my local area called "On Call" when they are all together and "The Etters" when its only the leader and his daughter. They are very talented and a real blessing, but sing only semi-locally and primarily only on the weekends, so that they can support themselves financially with jobs and still minister God's love to people.

BrentJ -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/4/2009 12:01:16 AM)

There are some local groups all around the US that would make some full time groups step back and take notice. I love going to see "part timers". Some are very talented and love doing what they do without the stress of making payroll, taxes etc....

You are exactly right. That's what I'm talking about. You take a guy who has been in a big group, that can recognize talent and put together an awesome little part time group, that could really bless alot of people, maybe more than a big group can.

steelcitylead -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/4/2009 6:46:42 PM)

This is a great subject. Our bass singer and I have at one time(when we were younger) sang full time and enjoyed it but it is hard on your family, etc. We enjoy singing now more than ever without the pressure of a lot of travel, being away from my family, and no struggle to pay the bills.
My point is as said before is that this is the best sounding group I have ever sang with and we have fun but most important part is that we minister, we see souls saved and as the old song says, " Aint that what it's all about".

God bless all the full timers, part timers and some timers. It takes all to make it happen.

PerrysFan -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/5/2009 12:22:18 AM)

I am in a part time group and I love it!! We mostly travel on the weekends and sing alot at out home church...on the other hand, the bigger(full time) groups have alot more stress as far as travel, family, etc. As far as money goes, it all depends on WHO you work for...hint hint.....some group owners DO NOT treat their singers fairly. Sad to say, but it is true! But let's not leave this on a bad note..let's all keep using our gifts and talents to glorify Him and see souls saved...God Bless[:D]

Amen, PF, that's the main thing, is that singers are gifted by God and are not in obedience to God when they are not using those gifts. If a guy gets "burned out" from singing on the road, that's fine as long as he continues to minister in song in some way.
There is no excuse for a singer not to sing, unless it is a health issue. To me, it's the same as a preacher. If God called you to preach, then you don't stop preaching. You may not always feel like God is leading you in the pastorate, but you are never to stop preaching.

robertyork -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/5/2009 2:23:15 PM)

Going tonight to see Derrick perform his last time with BFA. I don't think Derrick or Eric will be singing with a group anytime soon. Jonathan is happy singing with his son and don't think you'll see him with a group anytime soon. When Derrick's brother, Jason, left the Kingsmen you haven't seen him singing. He's happy working for the post office.

I hope that even if they don't want to sing in a group, they find ways to continue using thier gifts for God, and don't waste them, if it's nothing more than singing in church on Sunday morning!!!

frog43 -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/5/2009 8:32:01 PM)

Once again Bill, you are making judgment calls about other people's lives. It is not your call to decide if someone is wasting their gifts. I know women who left the road voluntarily to be stay-at-home mothers. I have known men who have left the road to be closer to their family. THEY ARE AT PERFECT PEACE KNOWING THAT THEIR FIRST PRIORITY IS THEIR FAMILY, ACCORDING TO GOD'S WORD.

There are seasons in each of our lives. And just because I can sing does not mean that I am supposed to be doing it this minute. God decides what the season is, not BillBaileyBFAFan, or anyone else. God is the only authority on who is wasting their talents, and who isn't. Please stop it.

Frog, I never said that anyone had to be on the road to be in God's will. But, if you are a saved person, and God has given you the gift of singing, then if you are not singing for Him, you are wasting your gift.
Serving God has nothing to do with seasons. You don't get to quit serving God because you feel like it.
If God calls you to preach, you don't get to stop because you don't feel like it. God may lead you to preach in different places or different ways, but the call is not rescinded. Most singers say they singing is their calling. If that is indeed the case, God doesn't rescind that either. He may lead you to stay at home and sing in your home church, or He may lead you to sing on the road.

How a person uses the gift that God has given them is not the same for every person. It is not one-size-fits-all.

People who have gifts also have families to care for and raise and they must factor that into the mix of what how theyy must structure their lives.

And Ecclesiastes 3 does say that there are seasons in serving God.

frog43 -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/6/2009 2:14:56 PM)

The point is that for right now, God could be calling that person to do something else. Perhaps He is preparing this person for something down the road. We don't know. That's why we can't judge. I would never presume to tell you how to run your life, or to tell you that I think you are wasting your gifts. That's God's job. And I know for a fact that I am not qualified to do God's job! Are you?

kingsman -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/7/2009 2:54:41 AM)

I agree. The Spirit gives to each of us gifts to benefit the church. Let the Spirit control the use of the gift(s). In addition to the excellent reasons already stated, it may be as simple as the singer needs rest or his singing voice needs rest. Every day we all have to rest our bodies and sometimes that includes changes to keep from burning out or to shift priority to other things where the wheels are coming off and a little tender-loving preventative maintenance is in order. Let's go easy on our singers; they give us their all; the least we can do is give them some slack and the benefit of the doubt.

gbcmusicguy -> RE: More Departures in SG music than normal??? (7/7/2009 10:45:45 AM)

Isn't the point of the Christian life to Glorify God? Whether you are using your talents or not using them at that moment?

"whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" I Cor. 10:31

Whether a "singer" is singing or not, as long as he is bringing glory to the Lord and spreading His word, isn't that what it's about? I mean yes, we should use the gifts God has given us, but if we are not using those specific gifts, God can still use us to bring folks to Him.

Just my 2 cents.....

Musicguy
