Congratulations, Tammy and Audrey!

Haven't been on much lately; home with DH who is recovering from surgery (minor procedure under local, but it was on his back so he has to stay flat on his stomach and eat a liquid diet; today he's on solids again, yay!).

Got some very inconvenient news Friday: a jury summons. I actually would kinda like to serve on a jury, but the timing couldn't be worse: a) for the next months I'll be on tenterhooks to see if baby will make it, b) they're not going to schedule trial times around my prenatal appointments and c) I have a work deadline for end of December that needs my full concentration, and nobody else can fill in for me. *sigh* That said, I'm not high risk, so I won't get a medical postponement; also, I'm pretty sure it's policy at my office never to ask for a postponement for work reasons unless it's completely crucial. Hmm. Not sure how I'm going to deal with this.

Anybody else ever get called for a jury while pregnant? My current plan of action, assuming neither my midwife nor my boss thinks I should be excused, is to go in and tell them that I'm pregnant, and while I try to control it, I'm much more emotional than usual, and that I'll need pee and snack breaks more often than most. I can't lie to get out of this but that's nothing but the truth.

Is it really such a big deal over there to get excused? Here in the UK, you'd only have to say you were pregnant, or had children, and they'd let you off.

I've never had any problem getting excused from Jury duty. I think last time I was on bedrest, all I had to do was email the jury duty coordinator just excused me. Oh, I did get called again, but I was breastfeeding and was also excused.

My SIL is pregnant!!!!!!!!! She is due 12 weeks after me. So I am officially hoping they have a girl - so we can have baby girls and do mother/daughter stuff together. They also have a boy and she would like a girl this time, but we will all be very happy either way. My nephew has been independently praying for either a baby sister or brother so I don't think he has a preference.

Anne, when I was pregnant with Josh and had recently gotten the GD diagnosis I got a postponement for jury duty. Not because of the GD, but because I made myself seem like a huge nuisance to have around. It wasn't the greatest because it would have put me back when he was 6 months old but I wound up missing that one. I did finally serve earlier this year. Manda, I don't know about Anne's situation but it can be a huge problem to be excused in the states. CT won't excuse nursing mothers, primary caregivers of young children etc. Though my main problem was not having anyone to watch Josh, Mark took a day off but I am not sure how we would have worked it out if I had gotten a long trial. The attitude around here at least is that you will just call up some random daycare facility and see if they do drop-in care. And jury reimbursement doesn't come anywhere near covering childcare expenses.

To be on topic: I am 25 weeks!

Maybe I am missing something but if your having a "normal" pregnancy and aren't high risk then why not go to jury duty? I can understand work conflict but I don't get it with just pregnancy... But then, I am the sort who doesn't want to be treated differently or coddled because I'm pregnant so maybe it's just me? It used to drive me nuts at work when they wouldn't 'let' me do things because I was pregnant. Pregnancy is a completely natural thing, women have done it for centuries

Kris, congrats on the SIL being pregnant!! My SIL and I are pregnant together again, our girls are 6 weeks apart and these current "beanies" should be 3-6 weeks apart. We are hoping to have the same gender again because it's a total blast watching the girls play together.

Around here you get excused for pregnancy if you are 35 weeks or more and I am sure they would excuse you if you were having severe morning sickness. And of course you would be excussed if you were on bedrest.

I would have gone if it hadn't been for the GD. I had just been diagnosed (the end of the week before) and was trying to deal with the blood sugar monitoring, diet changes and a ridiculous number of visits to various medical people. Not to mention it being nigh unto impossible to eat every 2-3 hours in court. If it hadn't been for that it would have been easier than trying to go with a baby around. If I were in Anne's shoes though I wouldn't want anything to interfere with my OB visits or tests even with a perfectly normal pregnancy. But that's just me. I do agree that people shouldn't freak out about someone doing stuff just because she is pregnant - I know (or learn) what I can and can't do and adjust accordingly. I am sure some things that bother me don't give other women a second thought while pregnant and vice versa.

I guess that would depend on what kind of trial it was?

I didn't *want* to be treated differently and certainly not "coddled" when I was pregnant with my first child. However, from 8 weeks onwards I would retch at every little odd smell, or sometimes from no smell at all, all the way through till the end, even though I really wished I didn't. At times I was also so weak I'd fall asleep wherever I was - and was found several times asleep on the cold stone-tiled floor of our kitchen. And as for needing to pee extremely often, and having extreme heartburn from 12 weeks right through to the end. Like it or not, I needed to be treated differently.

I'd have been a nightmare if I'd had to do jury duty at that time. As it was, I wasn't asked until my two were older, and was excused for home responsibilities.

Or testing in front of all those people too. GD is hard because YOU have to do the job for your pancreas...which would be very difficult in the middle of a trial, like you said. I don't think the judge would be very favorable to you asking for a recess every 2 hours, "I need a recess so I can eat so my blood sugar doesn't crash".

Well, I guess it's hard for me to understand. No problem with it, really if that's what you need to do... I just don't think there should be an overall excuse just because one is pregnant. Then you get into the whole "pregnancy is an illness" thing and that *really* drives me nuts. (not saying that about anyone here, just about our society in general)

You can always use a friends method of getting out of jury duty, Jen. She always takes a highly political/controversial book to read during the elimination process Of course, getting a summons does not mean one will even be selected.

Now if only Baby Northstar could read! Though no one else is up for a couple of weeks so I doubt you'll "lose" your place. How are you feeling? Only a week (give or take) to go!

I'm in Canada, and jury duty seems similar to the situation in the US. I don't know anybody who's ever been called, and the FAQ doesn't talk about pregnancy, but it does say that if you have small kids at home, it's up to you to find child care for them, so I don't think they excuse you for that. They will postpone it for a medical condition (backed up with a note), so I'll see what my midwife thinks.

In other circumstances I'd want to go, but it depends on whether I could get time off from the trial to get to appointments. Here in Ontario you can't just schedule a u/s or prenatal appt for a specific time/date; meanwhile, if court is in session, you have to be there. Appointment? Too bad. Cancel it. If they can work around my appt schedule (which I doubt) and if I were called for, say, January (ie after my December deadline), a short trial would be all right. For me it's not so much about pregnancy as an illness as about allowances which work always makes, and which jury duty would not. Also, I know I could never handle days, evenings and weekends in court, which some trials can entail.

Anne-girl, are you considered high risk because of your previous pregnancy? I can't imagine they would force someone who has a high-risk pregnancy to skip prenatal appointments...?

I'm feeling ok...as comfortable as can be expected I guess...had a few twinges this morning that were the same kind of feeling as a contraction, but didn't last long enough to be actual contractions, though hopefully it means things will get going soon! Thursday is my 'original' due date, and Sunday is the revised date...I'm soooo hoping I won't go beyond then!

actually..if you tell them that you are GD or regular diabetic...they make health allowances....they have to...because neither one is a "life threatening disease" in and of itself, but the consequences of not dealing with it appropriately can be.

They allow diabetic jury members to bring snacks into court...and will put them in the back row so that they can discretely test and snack as needed. Contrary to what you see on TV...they DO take breaks quite often...because they do not want the lawyers, defendants, judge, etc. peeing their pants or becoming ill from not eating/drinking enough.

on another note....be praying for me....my "silent" kidney stone that is high up in my kidney is deciding to NOT be silent. I have been in a LOT of pain the last 3 days, and throwing up every time I eat or drink anything more than a TBS. worth of anything. Since I am pregnant...there is nothing they can do unless I become "blocked"....which then would require surgery. Just pray this stone either settles down back to "sleep" or that it gets busy and moves on out.

WOF, sorry to hear about your kidney stone. Praying.

As for jury duty, I did tell them I had GD and the woman I was dealing with did not say that any allowances would be made - snacks, breaks when I needed to in order to test etc. But I am not required to serve again until October 2013 so next time I'll just have to worry about the time of year. Mark is considered a critical employee from Sept to Feb so he can't take time off to watch kiddos while I serve.

Speaking of GD (and returning to topic), I am going for the 3 hour test on Sat. I can't go during the week because of Josh. So I get to spend a Sat. morning sitting around the blood lab. I think Mark is going to drop me off as soon as they open, take Josh out to breakfast and then go to karate. They have free childcare on Sat. mornings so it works out pretty well. We actually do a lot of errands in the same town on Sat. morning so Josh and I are normally at the karate place hanging out in the play room anyway. So he knows the lady who watches them and the kids that are normally there. So what are you supposed to eat before this test? I have heard high fiber/protein. And that you don't have to fast.

I only did the one hour test, I was told not to eat anything high in carbs. I think I had some grilled chicken and a salad. I would ask the lab though, since they all seem to be different.

How far away is your maternity unit, northstar? When I had my two, we were living on the Isle of Wight, and thankfully the hospital was only 7 miles away.
