Actually, we only take up 5 or 6 seats plus a wheel chair. If someone was disturbing enough to affect one of us, they would be affecting all of us. I wouldn't want my children to have to deal with distractions just so I don't have to. What we do is position our selves strategically. I find people talking and giggling, children scribbling on papers, playing with toys, conversing with each other, trying to play with our kids, or laying all over the place extremely distracting. So we don't sit near kids who do that stuff. I still like having them in the service though. Fortunately, the people in our church tend to sit in the same spots in church. The people that sit in the front half of the left side always sit there. So it is pretty easy to pic an area that fits one's needs after you have attended a few times. OTOH, a few rows behind us is a family with very handicapped young men. Sometimes they "talk" or make other disturbances, one crinkles paper to occupy himself. Strangely, that doesn't bother me at all.

SO true PL2. They had an article hanging at the school where I work saying that an ADD/ADHD child needs to be able to wiggle to concentrate. If they have to sit completely still that takes all their concentration and they can't think. My DS learns better if he has some sort of small wiggling or pacing to do.

I have a notebook I doodle in while I'm at church. I generally write little comments about the sermon but sometimes I just write whatever comes to mind. Occasionally I have forgotten it and about broke out in a cold sweat as I shook the whole row jiggling and wiggling.

My husband can't sit still for anything...he has ADD...but he hears everything that is said even though he has to get up several times during a short 20 minute sermon. That's how I am,always fidegty yet always manage to pay attention to the sermon.

The church I attend encourages family worship. If a child is being loud, disruptive or cries and yells during the service, the parents simply take the child out of the service until they calm down or have their need met. I would recommend being close to a door for a quick exit if the occassion arises.

The best part of our Christmas Eve service was the toddlers and youth choir.....it would have been such a shame had they been placed in a backroom out of sight while only the adult's worshipped.

It could be that this church is equipped with a sound system and comfortable seating. I once went to a church that was set up like that ... with a one-way window. So moms of young babies could sit near the window and participate.

Toddlers and youth are a little different then babies, but I agree that I do enjoy it when the youngsters get up to sing or do a little skit. We still had a nursery available, but most folks had their kids with them for the Christmas Eve service. We left early because our kids were getting tired, and my niece had to be brought back to the nursery because she wouldn't behave (she's 2), but otherwise it was very nice.
