Welcome Bryan, and thanks for posting. This type of input from an "industry insider" is always welcome here. In fact, it will make some of these folks' week!

Hope you get to post again.

Bryan, i think two of your very best songs were "Come and See the Rising Sun", and "Master I See". Those two songs give me chill bumps just listening to them. Especially the year at NQC you guys did "Master I See" and you really slowed it down, it was you (Bryan), Jerry, Parker, and Ray. And that song just filled that auditorum like a sound i never heard before. Wow!

"Proven Time and Time Again" was the first Kingsmen record that WE (the singers) had input on. It was a hard record cause Nick Bruno produced it. He can hear harmony and arrangements that no mortal man can hear! haha. It was a great recording and I am very proud of it.

I am honored to be part of the legacy of The Kingsmen.

Welcome to the boards. That was my choice for the best Kingsmen album of this decade. I like When God Ran but it just hasn't hit me as much as many of the others on the board. I guess I need to keep listening to it.

I think Phillip is a great guy, and a great singer. I agree that he has a unique style and voice. I also agree that the blend of Hughes & Peace & Peace & Reese wasn't quite up to Kingsmen standards. But. that was only because they didn't stay together long enough for it to completely 'gel'. Sometimes, I do think Phillip needed to drop to baritone and let Tony* sing lead-- just from a power standpoint. That might not be a bad idea now, either, with Bryan. I say that because of Phillip's particular stage presence -- sometimes he comes across as singing really hard and powerful, when, in fact, he's just a little tad thin, compared to the other vocals. I'm not meaning that in a bad way. Like I said, I think he's very good, it's just that often, the other voices surrounding yours might unintentionally take away from yours. Possibly, switching the parts might help. Listen to the songs where someone else (namely Bryan) has the lead line throughout, and Phil is singing baritone...Now, buddy, THAT'S a good, full Kangsmen sound!!!

Good to see you back on the forums, Bryan!

* Oh, yeah... Tony is a great friend, and I was glad to see him get to sing with The K'men even though it was short lived. However, I must admit, that I wondered why he was there. After it was all said and done, I think his presence there helped them get back to singing 'big' again. Especially after them going through Jeremy's more formative years and Tim Surrett's voice problems. I wish TP was back out there singing somewhere. I'm glad JP is with TOPQ-- they're better than ever, now. And I'm glad Tim's voice is better, and that he's back singing the bluegrass style that he obviously loves!

Jchaz, I think you hit the nail on the head. For me, the blend of voices is, I guess where my real issue is with Phillip. I think that the Tim Surrett era suffered from a blending problem on some songs too. I really think that the Hutson and then Crawford led Kingsmen had the best sound overall. Even better than the Hamill or Parsons led groups.

KingsmenQuartetFan, I think you are right about Aaron McCune. I love Jeremy Lile, but I think that McCune's style would suit the Kingsmen alot more than Liles (I just gave those 2 example though as 2 good young bass singers, not that either one, should be the one to replace Ray necesariy), and I know that Ray knows his stuff. He has been one of my favorite bass singers for years. I do think a change is close at hand, though. I have predicted that in 2 or 3 years, they will have a new bass singer. I hope they pick a great one up.
I really do wonder though, why Ray isnt featured as much. Is it to help with conserving his voice, or just a style change? It's been a little while since I have gotten to see them in concert, does Ray still do alot of bass leading songs in concert??

In concerts, Ray has a good bit of bass leading songs. I know that near bout every night they sing "Beautiful Home" and "When I Wake Up To Sleep No More"(If Im wrong on that Bryan, please correct me). I think Ray is trying to conserve his voice but Ray is also putting Bryan, Phillip, and Harold out there in the spotlight. Yea, I understand why you picked those 2 young basses, and Im glad You understand what I was saying. I love having these kind of discussions on here.

Welcome on here Bryan, my good friend!

I love them too. Good stimulating conversation without name calling, or hurt feelings. Everyone has different opinions, and while I may disagree with someone, I try to respect their views, while still expressing mine..
Those 2 songs you mentioned are classic!!! It should be written into "Kingsmen Law" that those 2 songs be sung every night, as long as thier is a Kingsmen group in existence, as well as "When They Call My Name"!!!!!
And as long as Bryan is there, "Even John Couldn't Tell It", and "Come and See, The Rising Son"!!!

Just a question, since I havent seen the group since Bryan rejoined, Does Bryan lead on all his old songs when the do them?, like the ones I mentioned above and others.

I respect yours and everyone's opinion and Im glad that they are people on here that can disagree without getting mad. Yea, I know they sang "I'll Live Again" last Novemeber at a local church here in my area and Bryan lead on it and I got to sing that song with them I think Bryan leads on "The Cross Has Won Again" and old classics like that. Yea, those classics should be sung because they never get old to me and the Kingsmen do a great job at singing those songs at concerts

OH yeah, "I'll Live Again" is one of the greats. It's hard to believe that Shelter has been out almost 10 yrs.!!!! Shelter is one of my fav. albums.
I guess I probably seen them the most during the time between Georgia Live and Good News. I think that in that time they were THE best by a good margin in Gospel Music.
One of the best concerts I saw was back in I guess 2000 at Dollywood, right after Shelter. They had the neat banners that had a different letter on each one to spell KINGSMEN, and wore neat matching suits. The first time I had ever seen them wear matching suits. It was actually the same suits as in the Shelter video, which is my second fav. video, behind You're Not Alone...cause I was there in Knoxville that night when they filmed You're Not Alone!!!!! Wonderful night, I'm tellin' ya.

I could be wrong on that Daniel, but the many times I have heard them sing "Glory Road" live, they had a pianist

Well, I suppose it's one of those songs that is just simply better live.

Hey Daniel and Josh,
This probably won't answer your question, but the few times I've seen the Kingsmen this year, they haven't included Glory Road. I do know that every time I had an opportunity to see them last year, they did all the songs from Honoring the Heritage II with the exception of Old Ship of Zion.

I also voted for When God Ran! I think this Cd has a good mix of energetic songs and powerful ballads. It's a GREAT project!

I saw the Kingsmen sing at Singing in the Smokey's and let me tell you - I've never seen Ray so into a song! If he was tired from being on the road - you wouldn't have known it! The interaction and emotion he displayed on stage while they sang When God Ran showed how much the song meant to him - to all of them! Obviously, Ray wasn't singing lead, but when they all join in - Wow! They give that song a punch! Bryan will put tears in your eyes EVERY TIME! Bryan owns that song. You can easily see why after two months When God Ran was in the top twenty and in three short months comes in at number nine on the SN charts!
quote:

For me, the lineup hurts "When God Ran". I just dont think that Phillip Hughes is a very good lead singer, and Ray's vocals have really dropped off on the last few albums.
Not many have a song jump like that which I think says something about the quality of this line-up.

When I saw the Kingsmen at the end of July, one of a number of songs that Ray was featured on was To Count For Jesus. His voice was so powerful on the chorus that he overpowerd the rest of the guys. He also sang Healing Stream, When I Wake Up and Beautiful Home. I'd say he was featured on several songs, and that was at a concert less than a month ago. Ray was just as into When God Ran when they sang it that night - and I have to tell you, the place was an oven! The air conditioning wasn't working and if the guys weren't hot enough, then the sun came around the building and baked them through the glass! They gave an EXCELLENT, energetic concert in very uncomfortable conditions .... I think if ever there was a time that fatigue would show, that would have been the time. Hot, humid and stuffy would be an understatement - but they gave such an energetic performance, despite the conditions, that everyone forgot they were hot, sweaty and miserable in the heat. (THANK YOU guys!) Signs of true professionals. They also sang, The Cloud He's Coming Back On, Gospel Road, When God Ran, The Sound From The Other Side and He Knows My Name - their sets were awesome!

David - GREAT thread! Thanks for starting it ....

Edited for clarification.
