I went and saw OTGHQ a few years ago, and Robbie Hiner was gone that night. They had his part on a CD. It was really weird, cause you would hear Robbie Singing "There's A Brighter Day" ... but he wasn't there.

The Florida Boys was at my Church once... and Glen Allred wasnt there. They had another guy filling in....singing all the songs from index cards.... wasn't quite the same.

I did run into a nice suprise last weekend.... Kevin Spencer was in town, but James and Starla was on vacation, so his mom and dad came and sang with him... kind of a Spencer Family Reunion... it was WONDERFUL!

I agree, Terri. Life DOES happen. This is a life-changing event in this man's life, and worrying about upsetting some fans by taking time off to get married is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong; I would be terribly disappointed if I didn't get to see/hear my favorite singer, but I would totally understand his/her absence.

I took a short leave of absence from my job (as a teacher) a few years ago because my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and I was pregnant at the time and under tremendous stress and anxiety. I knew that I would not be able to perform my job to the best of my ability, and I truly did not want to put my students through that. I had people who later told me that several of the kids' parents were upset with me for taking 4 months off (the last 4 months of the school year). I was very distressed by this because this was a personal situation (crisis) in my life. It was LIFE ALTERING!! But I still had folks who were angry with me, and said some nasty things about me. But guess what? I made the best decision for my family, my students, and me. I did not take that decision lightly.

My point in saying all of this is that we need to remember that we are ALL human! Even SG artists. We all have things going on, and we can't please everyone every time. And we shouldn't have to. I don't know anyone who has never had to miss work, and we shouldn't expect SG artists to be any different in that regard.

A friend of mine saw BFA while Jeremy was out. They didn't even have a 'sub' for that concert. They sang as a trio.

If both of you think that's wierd...........as the saying goes, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
Man, I could tell some stories.
For example, a group's pianist couldn't make it to one concert, (they were performing that night with Danny Funderburk) so since they were in the process of making a recording then, they just made a rough mix (VERY ROUGH) of just the piano and a little bass. On some songs you could easily hear the lead vocal bleeding in on the soundtrack...out of time with the lead being sung live.
The funny thing was that Danny's set included quite a few songs he sang with Mercy's Way, with Greg Day's voice singing lead in the choruses. That was an interesing concert.

Charles Story has been doing a great job of subbing for Eric with the Dove Brothers. It sounds like he was just thrilled to be able to travel with them for a while.

Another example, a quartet out of northern Ohio has for severall years had trouble for various reasons keeping tenor and bass singers. It's very odd hearing the tenor AND bass dubbed on the tracks by their lead singer. It's actually a good sound, but unlike anything you've ever heard before.

The post confused me for a moment.

I first glanced at Charles, and thought it said Carl. I thought WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A BLUEGRASS GOSPEL LEGEND DOING FILLING IN WITH THE DOVE BROTHERS?

Anyone ever saw brian free and assurance without brian free??

Actually the first time i saw BFA, they were either between bass singers (bill to keith) or bill just wasn't there.

I saw the hoppers one time when Kim was sick and they had Nicole Watts Jenkins, formerly of the perry's, sing ....IT WAS REALLY REALLY GOOD!!

One part of the equation that we seem to be forgetting - the promoter. This date may have been booked for some time, Jeremy's wedding date was set for some time. The promoter may not have allowed Brian's group to 'change' the date. In that case you do what you have to.

I remember when Rodney (GV) could not sing. He stood on stage and lip sang the program with his voice dubbed on tracks.

Yep. All you can do is the best you can do! That includes substitutes or just "fake singing" with the tracks!

I have no idea if this is truth or fiction, but I heard that last year when Steve Ladd was having vocal problems from acid reflux that he "faked" his sets with Gold City at NQC. Anyone else hear this?

Please, I don't want anyone to misunderstand my comment. I am not being critical AT ALL of the circumstances when anyone has to "fake it" because of things not under their control! Sometimes, there's just no way around it!

I think you are right. Steve couldn't even talk. He was writing on a board what he wanted to say to people.

Subbing does not bother me as long as they replace them with a quality singer. Sometimes it is someone you injoy that does travel anymore. Acouple years ago to Dolly Wood and Steve was not there . They had Wayne Manyard filling in they did Old Ship Of Zion it was awsome . Everyone was having a good time worshiping tha day.

Before I saw the board, I asked him a question, and he answered in a voice somewhere between normal and a whisper. He could talk a little, but then explained on the board that he was saving his voice for the nightly concerts.

Of course, he sounded very good in the evening, to the point where I can see some would say "suspiciously good."

I may be wrong, but I don't think they said Steve couldn't talk, but that he shouldn't.

I don't know about at NQC, but I know during the time Steve was "vocal rest" I saw Gold City several times and in those concerts, Steve wasn't lip syncing. A couple nights, I heard his vocal go... um, how do I say this.... where it wasn't supposed to go. If they had a track for him to lip sync, that wouldn't have been on it. I love Steve, so I'm not trying to be mean or critical, but the fact that he wasn't perfect shows he wasn't faking his vocal at the concerts I attended.

It seems like I can remember reading a release from Gold City at the time that Steve Ladd was having trouble with his acid reflux, that he was advised by his doctor to sing and talk as little as possible each day. It was something like no more than 90 minutes a day if I remember correctly. In their release Gold City explained that if Steve didn't talk to you at a concert he wasn't being rude, he was just saving his voice to sing.

Me and BRBB was watching Gold City's new DVD from NQC the other day and we noticed how uncomfortable Steve looked when he hit certain notes. So I believe at least some if not all of what we heard was Steve actually singing.

There have been several artists I have seen in concert before that were lip synching. As others have mentioned it may have been for legitimate reasons.

I wish in my job I had something recorded when I don't feel like saying what I have to say. So I give credit for the singers at least being on stage and trying their best under adverse circumstances.
Seems like bashing the singers is the protocol of the day. Don't quite understand. Just my opinion.

Good point. There's no way they would have released a video of the three sets if Steve was completely lip synching.

Who knows, maybe his stacks were a little higher than usual. But I think he had to have been singing.
