Oh Wise Counselor Kerrlaw and Friends,

Who is this in my avatar?

The first to guess it right, gets a prize.

(Kerrlaw, I fixed the title to your thread--should help you pick up some online traffic. )

You should get a prize for that answer, blue!

I'd say G.K. Chesterton but he's too skinny. Still, that's who I think it looks like.

Now I have to decide what the prize should be.

Have you read The Man Who Was Thursday?

Wow! I remember pictures of Chesterton as being a Teddy Roosevelt kinda fluffy.

Yay me!!!! He must have been very young in that picture.

Yes, I have read it. I loved it, he's a trip!

Just knowing I was right is prize enough.

You don't want a new book? I really was going to buy a book for the winner.

Have you read The Bird Artist? Shipping News? Till We Have Faces? Floating Off the Page: The Best Stories from the Wall Street Journal's Middle Column? Stet [TOS] by Florence King? Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation? Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage? Death in Yellowstone?

Far be it from me to turn down a new book.
Of those, the only one I have is Till We Have Faces.

Till We Have Faces is cool. I'd like to read it again, but I loaned out my copy and well, you know how that goes.

What book are you interested in? You think about it and let me know. (and let me know if there is a book you want that isn't in my eclectic list).

Have you seen the IMAX movie about it? I've seen a few movies about Endurance, but the IMAX is my favorite because it is filmed so beautifully.

I was telling hubby of this discussion and he was under the impression that Vegans are a cult of people who worship The Vega.

It's a very small, elite group.

I owned what was probably the best Vega ever made.

It was a 1973 model and I drove it without a bit of trouble until 1981, when someone hit it in the rear while my girlfriend was driving it.

A man in my hometown bought it as it was, tied the trunk closed with a rope, and drove it until he died over 10 years later.

From Wikepedia:

quote:

"Chesterton was a large man, standing 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and weighing around 21 stone (134 kg or 294 lb). His girth gave rise to a famous anecdote. During World War I a lady in London asked why he wasn't 'out at the Front'; he replied, 'If you go round to the side, you will see that I am.'[6] On another occasion he remarked to his friend George Bernard Shaw, 'To look at you, anyone would think there was a famine in England.' Shaw retorted, 'To look at you, anyone would think you caused it.'[citations needed]

He usually wore a cape and a crumpled hat, with a swordstick in hand, and had a cigar hanging out of his mouth. He would sometimes carry a knife and a loaded revolver. Chesterton often forgot where he was supposed to be going and would miss the train that was supposed to take him there. It is reported that on several occasions he sent a telegram to his wife, Frances Blogg, from some distant (and incorrect) location, writing such things as "Am at Market Harborough. Where ought I to be?" to which she would reply, "Home."[7]"

I think that I would like him.

I have heard of the Father Brown detective stories but never read any Chesterton.

Here is a 1973 Vega. I had to look it up. Is this what you had?

I've read The Man Who Was Thursday, and a lot of his Orthodoxy. I'd like to read more of his stuff.

Football season has begun!!!

Four college games are on right now.

USC already played this week...last night and won...or so I've been told and the nonstop chatter on the radio.
I have one nephew and his fiance who are Clemson Alumni and his younger sister is a junior at USC! Question dear Kerr...why is it we see more Virginia Tech stickers and license plates around here than all of the SC schools???
