My parents used to take us to all nite sings in Indianapolis. They were AWESOME!!!! Featuring everybody who was anybody! The singing was held at a baseball stadium and you could either sit in the stands or on the field at stahe level. If you sat on the field you took lawn chairs, cooler, etc.....The concert was from sun down to sun up! I remember one year being promised a "mystery group" at midnight. Well midnight came at the "mystery group" hit the stage in bright red suits and singing as only they could....they truly woke the crowd up....the group was Teddy Huffam and The Gems!!! This was my first time to see them and they were AWESOME!!!!! I miss those types of sings!

The closest all-night singing that I usually go to is the first Saturday night in August at Renfro Valley, KY. It used to start at 11:59 so they could say it was an all-night singing which usually ended at 4:00 am. But, for some reason, they have changed the time as I don't think the younger generation could take it!! It now starts at 7:00 pm til----
They usually have 6 groups, 3 groups in one barn and the other 3 groups in the new barn and then they'd switch so both barns got to hear them all. I am not sure who all is going to be there but I do know thus far that Mark Bishop, the Palmetto Qt. and the Tribute Qt. will be there this August but you can call Renfro Valley at 1-800-765-7464 or check out their Web Site and ask them.

My memories of all night sings are mostly in Dallas, Tx. Frank Stamps had the school of music. I never got to attend but one of my older brothers did. But we always went to the all night singing at the end of these schools. That is where I first saw The Gatlin Bros. They were really young back then and I wasn't very much older. That year has stayed in my memory all this time. Yes they really lasted all night. It would be day light when we walked out to our car.
There have been a few all night sings at Will Rogers in Fort Worth too. I remember one when the promoter said they would sing as long as we stayed to listen. The crowd really thinned out about 3 AM, but my family hung in til the groups finally said "enough!" Those were the days!

I REMEMBER GOING TO ALL NIGHT SINGINGS IN ATLANTA IN THE 60'S AND HEARING THE HAPPY GOODMANS IT TAKES ME BACK A FEW YEARS. BUT THEY WERE GREAT. THANK THE LORD WE STILL HAVE GROUP THAT WILL LET THE LORD HAVE HIS WAY IN THEIR SINGING.

We've been thinking about hosting a Wally Fowler Memorial All Night Sing at the War Memorial in Nashville. We would book a few of the better groups. What do you guys think of that idea?

Hey Ben, This would be a great idea. We went all-night sings in Birmingham when Wally would host them. As we grew older then came
J G Whitfield. They were held at the Boutwell Auditorium for a long time.
Now, the only thing that resembles an all night sing here is at Bessemer,
AL at the Civic Center, close to new years. Note: Did or have you ever sung on a particular night singing in three different locations on the same night rotating with other groups? rolling singing! We sure would like to sing at a good all night sing once again

I went to Bonifay one time in the early '70's. I think we stayed until about 3:00 A.M. Otherwise the nearest I've come is our own New Years Eve sings where we sang from 8:00 P.M. until midnight, usually just our group. Sometimes we would have another group or some local singers to help, and we usually would break for refreshments at some point. My only regrets are that I can't still do it. Our health and age dictated that we discontinue our singing after last New Years Eve. That was our 38th consecutive year. My daughter, in her 30's, has only missed one New Years Eve in her life that she wasn't at a sing, and from the age of 5 she sang at them all.

Well, I knew I was older than dirt, but this just proves it - my memories of all night singings go back to the Wally Fowler all nighters in the "old" Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. My Mom and Dad always took us once or twice every year and we would sweat our socks off (they had funeral fans on the back of all the pews) but we enjoyed it so much. Then the next night (Sat.) we would head back in there for the Grand Ole Opry show. I wouldn't take anything for those memories and just hope I can retain them for a few years. This was back in the 50's by the way.

I hate to sound dated, but I feel I am a bit older than most of you. However, the all night singings in Birmingham, AL were at the old Boutwell Auditorium *formerly the Municipal Auditorium. We stayed until at least 1:00 a.m. The lineup was the best Wally Fowler, Leroy Abernathy (Gospel Boogie), Goodmans, Dixie Echols, Florida Boys, Lefevres, Speer Family, Hovie Lister, Statesmaen and locals such as the Johnson Sisters. The singers would stay as long as the audience stayed.
I wish just once more we could have an All Night Sing herein B'ham. However, memories still last from that beautiful music.

Did anyone attend either the Bonifay FL or Waycross GA all night sings this year? This was the first year in many that Bill Bailey did not promote the Waycross sing, and the first year ever that the Bonifay sing was held indoors. In years past these were two of the biggest annual summer (July 4th) sings. Another notable change regarding these events was the line up changes.

I attended the Bonifay sing on Saturday night. It was a very different atmosphere being held inside, although for this year, I'm glad it was. A storm came up and it rained with thunder and lightening the first couple of hours. Bill said they would not have been able to sing in that weather outside. The line up was good. I'm a quartet fan so I really enjoyed the Dixie Echoes and Triumphant. The Tallys, Jeff & Sheri Easter, Michael Combs and Freemans were also there. Sheri never mentioned the fact that she has cancer...I didn't know until I was looking at Singing News today. She sang her heart out and smiled like she had not a care in the world. Bill said they have the sing scheduled to be at the High School again next year. Also, the crowd was not large. I've heard there were approx. 900 people in attendance; the gym has a capacity of 1325. We'll see what next year brings.

Yes, Ben. I would love to see an All-Nite Sing at the War Memorial Building. I have a lot of personal history with these singings. I was at the first Wally Fowler All-Nite Singing in Nashville at the Ryman in November 1948 (only 6 years old at that time). My parents would bring me to the singing many, many times on the first Friday night of each month. My first date with my wife was at the All-Nite Singing. We had many dates there at the Ryman. Then, after marriage, we went to many more of the singings at the War Memorial with J G Whitfield as the promoter. My, I could go on and on with all the memories that I have with groups like Rangers, Statesmen, Blackwoods, Harmoneers, Blue Ridge, Rebels, etc.
Let's go for it at the War Memorial!!

My Dad had The Laymen Quartet from Columbus Ohio. He did a lot of promoting with Sonny Simmons. We sang at the Civic Auditorium every New Years eve in Charleston W.V. The Oaks, The Laymen, The Downings,The Rambo's, and then we would jump to The Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus with The Lefevres,The Cathedral's, The Blackwood Brothers. We don't have the big sings in the midwest like we used to.

My name is Roy Brookshire, my father started the all-night singings in Jackson, MS around 1952-3 patterned after Wally Fowler. My step-mother Sue Brookshire handled the box-office, my father handled the stage and I and my brother John handled the door. I was 10 and he was 7. We all did this until the mid 90's when my father became a little too old to handle the rigors of the promotion.
The crowd favorites back then were the Blackwoods, Statemen, Klaught(?) Indian Family, Chuckwagon Gang and the Harmoneers (with Happy Edwards).
A few years later, we got to enjoy the Florida Boys, The Dixie Echos, The Spear Family, The Johnson Sisters (a trio), The Victors, The Rambos, The Hinson Family, The Happy Goodmans, The OakRidge Quartet and many more.
Starting in the late 60's, The Oakridge Boys, The Kingsmen, The Cathedrals, The Goodmans and a few more became the mainstays.
I will never forget when a few black couples started to come regularly. Some people complained about the new folks. I spoke to the black ticket holders, who were wonderful, very nice and understanding. I asked them where they wanted to sit. I ended up placing them in the otherwise unoccuppied loges. They were very happy. A few years later when Teddy Huffman and the Gems became VERY popular with everybody. The black ticket holders sat where ever the seats were assigned. Even then, OCCASIONALY I would have people complain but I would move the complainers.
I can even remember when the Oakridge Boys (name change) ask to close the show one night. They also asked permission to sing 2 Merle Haggard songs. We said OK, same them until almost the end and close the show with a gospel song. Willie Wynn sang 'Mama Tried' and Mama's Hungry Eyes'. They were terrific.
We also got to see the birth of a group. Hovie Lister came to Jackson for a New Years sing and his group had just QUIT. A few phone calls were made and some friends flew or drove to Jackson. The rehearsed in the Green Room and came on stage late in the show. My wonderful step-mother and I were on the front row to see the birth of the Masters V.
I believe the group was JD, Rosie Rozelle, Willie Wynn and Jake Hess.
They even used songbooks for a couple of songs. JD sang the Touch of the Master's Hands and left the audience crying.
I thank God for my many memories.
