Today it sounds like many groups have 2 lead singers, one singing the official "lead" part, one singing the baritone. But when you hear a pure, solid, smooth, rich baritone vocallist, he jumps out and grabs your attention.
Let's take some time to nominate and reognize the best guys on the road today singing the part that glues a quartet's sound together.
I can immediatley think of greats like the late Doy Ott , RW Blackwood, and Danny Koker. Living current/past singers certainly include Mark Trammell, George Ammon Webster, Scott Howard, Andrew King, Rick Fair, and Parker Jonathon.
Who else is worthy of mention??

My land, I almost forgot Eldridge Fox and Squire Parsons.
A man worth mentining is Tim Cambell. He sings in a little known group called Colonial City Quartet, from Mansfield, Ohio. Tim has been with them from at least the ealrly 1980's, and has constantly sang great.

If you are going to form a list like this you can't leave out Ed Hill. And of course Qtman.[:D]

There is one I would add and his name is Steve Lee. He was briefly with the Cathedrals between George Amon Webster and Mark Trammell. He can be heard on their Smooth As Silk and Interwoven LP's. I really like his version of Sweet Beulah Land.

Scott Inman with TQ has a wonderful baritone voice.
And I would definitely say Mark Trammell is one of the best.

IMHO Mark is probably the best out there right now. And you are right about Scott Inman. His voice is still young but the day is coming when he will rival any baritone out there.

Mark Trammell is my all time favorite baritone. I also really enjoy Scott Howard. A couple of other pure baritones that don't get enought recognition (IMO) are Randy Shelnut Jr (Dixie Echoes) and Melton Campbell (Inspirations).

You're so right, Tina!!! And sometimes Ronnie does sing the baritone part when Jim is featured on the melody.

Douglas Roark of the Old Paths has a great baritone voice. To me he sounds a bit like Mark Trammell.

Doug is very good. I hadn't noticed him sounding like Mark Trammell, though. I'll listen harder the next time I see them!

I think if you look up the word "baritone" in the dictionary, they will have a picture of Mark Trammell for the definition.[:D]

Marshall Hall he is really good! I love to hear the low tones of his voice. Scott Howard is good as well. You have to be able to hear harmony well, to sing that part well. It sure is easy to notice the Baritones who should be singing lead, because they struggle with the harmony line. The best hear the harmony and sing in with confidence, not memorize it and sound like a ro-bot.

If I was starting a group today I would be hard pressed to choose between Mark Trammell and Scott Howard for the Baritone part. IMO they are by far the two best.

Steve Lacy from the mid 90s with Gold City. What a voice. Definitely at or near the top of my list. My other favorites have already been mentioned- GA, MT and the like.

Definitely it is musically the toughest part to sing. However, physically, nothing is tougher than a man who sings like a women and yes, as a matter of fact, I am partial.[:D]
