The new Doctor Who has always had a darker edge to it, though perhaps not quite as dark as in this episode. However as a younger kid I loved the scarier moments of the show (yes, from my vantage point behind the sofa) and I don't think there was anything in the show that was too horrifying (not compared to what else is on TV these days anyway). It's just good old-fashioned scary. (I was still more scared by the Blink episode!)

As for death in the show -- I watched a few Jon Pertwee episodes a while back and the body counts were quite staggering. I'd forgotten how many people used to die in the earlier series!

I don't want to derail the topic, although I guess there is not too much to discuss until the next episode or this one airs in the States.

tacitus, I guess it's a matter of opinion of how well Hugh Laurie has done. A financial success, certainly. However(this is where my opinion enters), House is just another crime show except set in a hospital where the crimes are replaced by diseases. It's ordinary run of the mill American prime time, with Hugh Laurie's performance being the only thing causing it to stand-out among the rest of the crime show garbage that has plagued television for the past decade. But that's my opinion, I know there is a lot of House fans on here.

Back in Doctor Who world, David Tennant is hosting next week's Never Mind The Buzzcocks with an all Who themed show. I'm very interested in seeing David Tennant completely unleashed and allowed to say anything he wants. Even though the humor on the show can be crass, which is what interests me about his appearance.

Why do you say it was horrible? Did it give you the shivers?

Everything was horrible. The fact that it wasn't about aliens, but real live people being turned into murderous mutations, It was especially horrible that those still on the base were getting wet and knowing what was going to happen to them.

It was horrible for the Doctor having to walk away, but it was equally horrible that he came back and then had to face the consequence of his "rebellion", that woman's rejection of him and then what happened next.

And then horrible that he knew that his own "death" was getting closer, and horrible that he realised he'd crossed a line (crossed many years before by the Master).

Quite apart from the fact that I haven't quite been able to look at a carrot in the same way since! Or listen to my son or husband taking a shower!

I really enjoyed seeing him on the Graham Norton Show recently.

Re Buzzcocks, I am not sure at all whether I can stomach watching Noel Fielding in order to get to see David. I really can't stand NF, and though I'd love to see David, I'm just not sure I can tolerate NF in order to do so.

Laurie has won two SAG awards and two Golden Globes for his work on House and has received widespread critical acclaim for his role, so yes, by any measure, Hugh Laurie's move to the USA has been a great success.

And you have to remember that while David Tennant may be a fine Shakespearean actor (his Hamlet is being released on video at some point too) Doctor Who isn't exactly the pinnacle of high quality TV drama. Don't get me wrong, I have been a huge Doctor Who fan for most of the 40+ years I have been watching it, but it is what it is, a popular science fiction show with all the same imperfections that most TV series have.

So I will reserve judgement on Tennant's move to the USA. If it's a good show, then Tennant will make it a better one, but given all the uncertainties involved in developing a new show for TV there is no guarantee that it will be a success. However, I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

My parents met David Tennant once when he was with the Royal Shakespeare Company a few years ago, and were so taken with him in that short meeting that they have been great fans of his ever since. From that, and having seen him on several talk shows and some of the behind the scenes clips, I get the impression that he is an extremely nice fellow with a great sense of humor.

Funny you should say that -- I was on the phone to my parents back in the UK and they said they watched it too, and enjoyed it, and Graham Norton is hardly their usual cup of tea.

I think it might have been more recent than a few years ago!! More like 12-18 months ago max! He was Berowne in Loves Labours Lost with the RSC, and then Hamlet in Hamlet. Did they meet him in Stratford?

ACTUALLY, we find that Graham Norton is generally quite well behaved on his chat show, and does well as a chat show host, far better than a number of others. He at least makes it all about the guest, rather than all about himself (as, say, Jonathan Ross does).

I didn't even know Noel was on the show now. I don't like him either. I haven't seen Buzzcocks since Simon Amstell left. His relentless sarcasm towards the more talentless guests is what kept me watching.

Regardless of the talentless and annoying Noel, I have to see David.

everythingat,

Are you now living in the UK, or just on vacation? (You're American, right?)

If it's ok to ask

Yes, I am American. I live in England by proxy.

I will be permanently moving to England in the near future though. I love England so much, I think it's superior to the States in nearly every way. People belong in many different places of the world, whether it's their home country or not...I know England is where I belong.

I actually just watched a new episode of Buzzcocks. Noel seems a lot less annoying in it than the garbage that is The Mighty Boosh. That makes me look forward to David even more. One week away!

Has it been announced yet how they're airing the next two specials? I've only read rumors...possibly Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Then others have said Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Well they saw both those performances and loved them (they live in Stratford and go to most RSC productions) but they met him during a backstage tour a number of years ago during one of his two earlier stints with the company. It was probably in 2000 when he was in a number of plays, but it could have been in 1996 when he first came to Stratford.

Hmmm, so how did you get to see The Waters of Mars? (or don't I want to know? )

Maybe you'd be interested in our Brits vs Yanks chat thread in Home and Garden? It's quite long but you don't have to read all the previous pages (unless you want to!) you can just jump straight it.

AFAIK it's the latter.

Ha, I actually did tell. I use an English proxy to stream them from BBC's website. Bit of a loophole there that I take advantage of.

Donna is going to be reappearing as well...

I didn't post about 'The Waters of Mars'. I didn't really need to... Manda's posts said it all!

Thought I'd post this as I found it.

Manda (or anyone else in the UK!) have you seen the thing BBC1 have when they do programme announcements (which is what I was looking for)... the one with The Doctor, the Tardis and the reindeer? So brilliant. I couldn't find it.

I love it! "Christmas is brilliant!"

He will surely be missed as the doctor. But I think I read or heard he will be playing a character on a program airing over here soon.

Well, this American has finally caught up! I had my DVR set to record on the SyFy channel, but Doctor Who has been gone so long, I forgot to switch over to the BBCA.

Anyways, just saw Waters of Mars last night, and I agree that the Doctor's god-complex at the end was the scariest part of all.

I'm gonna say that I like Sarah Jane Adventures, even if they are a bit silly. I've only seen the first Series, but I'm planning on getting Series 2 on DVD for Christmas.

I watched something at the w/end (ok, I recorded and and watched the bits I wanted to watch!) and they had a clip of the Dr Who that's going to be shown on Friday....

Oh my goodness... I'm going to have a cushion to hide behind I think...

Granted it may have just been that clip out of context but still...
