It goes by various names, but what about soaking the bread in egg and frying it? Or making a bread and butter pudding (layers of sliced bread and dried fruit ~ I use sultanas ~ and covered in an egg custard, then baked.

You can also make breadcrumbs with it and then freeze those (though if you dry the bread out first in the oven they will keep without freezing for a few months).

I've come in late on this thread so I don't kow if anything like this has been mentioned already:
If I buy a pound of hamburger, ground pork, shrimp, etc. I'll cut it up into quarters and then freeze it. That way you don't have to keep thawing the whole thing out each time you need it.
I'll throw some ham and chopped bell peppers or burger into Mac & cheeze to stretch it out further.
Like a lot of people I get real tired of trying to think of what to cook all the time so if I do get something out I try to get something that can be stretched out over several meals.

Some good ideas, ajlewis. I can't remember if anyone mentioned the dividing things into quarters or not, but it's a good idea or reminder even if it was.

I never seem to think of doing that!

Yum, that sounds good too! I'll have to try it. Funny how we get stuck in a rut making the same old things all the time without even thinking about it, isn't it?

Here's a couple of recipes for B&B Pudding.

One
Two
Three

Some people will spread the bread with jam (your jelly) first but it's never appealed to me. The recipes will give you some ideas of how to do make it and what you can use though.

Thanks Agapetos! They sound good, I have to admit though I had to look up sultana's to see what they were . Golden raisins I can do, lol.

They do sound good though- I love custard so I'm sure I'd like these. Actually I made custard a little earlier just because of this thread .

Aah, that's French Toast! Yummy! Now that's a perfect use for bread that's getting a little old.

THE 5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE CAKE FOR ONE PERSON........HOW NEAT

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (This can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous.)

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

~~~~~~~
My friend is the activities director at a nursing home. She had her residents try this, then called and exuded over how well it turned out.
Enjoy!
Good to know . Knowing myslef as I do, I could truly gain 20 lbs over the first month of using that recipe... so I'd better not try it, lol. At least not for a reeeaaaallly loong time. I have too much weight to lose before I gain anymore, lol.
I haven't tried it, either... for the same reason gma. But, it's nice to know it works. And it would be handy to have as a project for the grandkids.
I tried it a while back. IMHO it wasn't worth the calories. I think I tried two bites and threw the rest away.
After reading that recipe, I'm glad I'm not a cake lover. I like it, but not enough to consider making it for myself.
Oooo a good excuse idea!
And if I use it I will try to remember blueeyedgirl2 saying she took two bites and tthrew the rest away... and make myself believe I would not like it too. "Try" being the dangerous word here... of course when I think of making that cake I also think about vanilla icecream on warm chocolate cake in a mug... can anything be bad with ice cream on it?
Maybe I screwed up the recipe or something. . . I'm rather glad I didn't like it because I have this thing for chocolate. That could have been bad. . . really, really bad. Let me know how you liked it if you choose to try it out.
It's that time of the year again. The time when the leaves start to change colors, the temperatures begin to drop, and the smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, and yeast breads fill the kitchens. Do you enjoy baking? or do you just enjoy eating? Here's where we tempt our palates with talk of delicious desserts and other foods. So let's talk about food... especially the challenges and joys of cooking for one (or a small army).
Here's the Taco Soup recipe I referred to in the other thread. It is so easy to make and it warms up well, making it a good option for us singles.
TACO SOUP with BLACK BEANS
1 lb. ground beef, browned and drained
28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
15 oz. can corn, undrained
15 oz. can black beans, undrained
15 oz. can red kidney beans, undrained
1 envelope dry Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix
1 envelope dry taco seasoning
1 small onion chopped
tortilla chips or corn chips (I like Fritos) :)
shredded cheese
sour cream
1. Combine all ingredients (except last three) in slow cooker.
2. Cover. Cook on low 4-6 hours.
3. Garnish individual servings with chips, shredded cheese, and sour cream.
That sounds delicious!! I have a similar recipe, but I haven't used it in so long I forget what's in it.
You were talking about pumpkin earlier... somewhere I have a recipe for a Pumpkin Latte... a copy-cat recipe from Starbucks. I've been meaning to look for it now that pumpkin season is upon us.
Ok, I'm lazy. I looked for the recipe ONLINE. I saw another recipe that had sugar, but this one doesn't have it. I would probably add extra pumpkin pie spices to this... I can't wait to try it!
heres one for quick nachos and it only takes about 6 minutes prep time and 3 actual cooking time
Take 1 can rotel tomatoes and put them in a food processor for about 2 minutes
use half a block of velveeta and nuke it on high for 2 minutes then take it out then incorporate the tomatoes and cheese till fully blended and nuke it again for 2 minutes.
Pour mixture over any type of tortilla chips you want and TADA Nachos.garnish with a sliced jalapeno and your good to go
Glad you brought this thread back up!
I like baking and cooking. I made a pork and mushroom pie filling yesterday and have frozen some of it. I've got some filling for lamb samosas cooking away ~ I'll make them later.
Does anyone have a good, tried and true, recipe for Salsa from fresh ingredients? I used to have a recipe where you cooked the tomatoes, removed the skins, added a few other ingredients, then put it all in the blender. It was from a friend who was from Mexico, and now I've lost contact with her.
