There are some physicians that think every first birth should have an episiotomy. Mine did and I gave birth a month early.

ORIGINAL: 3cappuccinosmom Avoiding c-sections in stalled childbirth. Interesting video. Give 'em just two more hours (past the two hour limit for no cervical changes) and 60-70% "un-stall" and get on with the birth. Who'd'a thunk??? or do what my doctor did with my first birth.....say loud enough for the mother to hear "I think we may need to call the anesthesiologist...we may need to do a c-section"....bam...in 15 minutes....my little one was there...NO c-section (he didn't do this until I had been pushing for 2.5 hours...he KNEW I didn't need one...but he also knew I was getting tired and needed some incentive.....)

WOF, that's knowing your patient! Say that to me and I freak out and think we've got a problem. But obviously it worked for you. Kris

I'm glad my doctor missed that memo and let me "stall" for almost 14 hours

Yeah, it was like 2 hours from 4cm to delivery for me, and that was with a 45 minute wait to let my epidural wear off so I could push. Transition was ROUGH, even with an epidural. I didn't have much pain but I definitely had the other changes- chills, sweating, nausea, vomiting.

That's me, Maggie! My doctor told me that while in pitocin, she expects a patient to progress one cm per hour or it gets turned up (she mentioned some kind of scale that the OB's here use). Not sure if she would insist on pitocin if a patient isn't progressing that quickly naturally. How I'm praying I can stay home until the baby is almost born!!!

I think I read somewhere that most women are going to "stall" somewhere along the line during labor in regards to dilation. It is normal and if women switch positions, make sure they urinate and are well hydrated, that normally will fix the issue. That is not going to be the case 100% of course, but there are some doctors who seem to jump on the pitocin bandwagon way too early. I'm just sooooooooooooo glad my doctor is not one of them.

I have a dialation question and hope I can ask it and make it clear enough to understand. I have a friend who was induced when she was 36 weeks because she was dialated 4 cm. Is it "really" necessary to induce someone just because they are dialated 4 cm? Her baby ended up being in the NICU because of breathing difficulties so I was wondering if she shouldn't have been induced. With her next baby, they induced when she was 6 cm (probably about 37 weeks). I wondered about that too. So...I guess my question is...would it be necessary to be induced when dialated a certain amount? If so, what's that amount and what's the reason behind it? I just figured if someone was dialated like that, then they would just keep dialating and then go into labor and have the baby without induction. But then, what do I know? LOL

Yeah, I think I'd be more prone to go on bed rest or something than to be induced at that. Isn't there a policy at most hopsitals though that 4 cm is the magical number where they won't let you go home though?

I was 4 cm at my 37 week appointment, 95% effaced. The discharge planning nurse on my floor was joking with me "That's admission criteria!" Except I wasn't in active labor. I went into labor on my own at 39w1d and everything was fine.

It is called going AMA (against medical advice), but yes...YOU can always choose to leave no matter what.

Thanks for the input ladies! I knew you all would know the answer. Thankfully the little guy was only in NICU for a short time (2-4 days, I think) but Erin's right--any NICU stay is too long! I just wanted to be educated should that ever happen to me. My friend's doctor is the one who believes in inducing at 38 weeks. So I'm not entirely surprised!

True...baby could be 40 weeks old...but they can just as easily only be 36 weeks old. It is so ridiculous, and so potentially threatening to the baby.
