Lowest down current bass singer - 10/7/2007 11:08:20 AM

This past summer we have got to hear some really low bass singers, and each time I heard one I thought he may be the lowest one out there until I heard the next one. They are Tim Duncan, Jeff Chapman, and then the past 3 weeks Jeremy Lile, David Hester, and Aaron McCune. We had heard all except David Hester multiple times in the past, and with other groups.
Who do you think is the lowest of the ones I mentioned, or is there a still-lower one I did not mention? I am not doing a poll, just curious about your opinions. This is NOT a comparison of who is the best, as they are each very good basses, and blend well with their respective quartets. It is just, who is the lowest? What say ye?

Billboy this is just my opinion. I prefer a bass that can sing the fourth harmony part over the bottom out bass notes. But of the ones you mentioned I think David Hester may have a slight edge on being the lowest.

Out of the bass singers I have heard, the ones who have gone the lowest are Jeremy Lile and Glenn Dustin. I've heard both of them literally rattle the seats.

I think the lowest note my untrained ears have heard in concert came from Mike Holcomb.

I've always been under the impression that this phenomenon had more to do with the sound system than the actual note. Could be wrong, though...

I would agree on Tim Riley. I did not include him since I was only considering those who are currently traveling in full-time groups. I assumed he was still retired from full-time SG. I have never heard the other different ones mentioned in person, but that is the kind of feedback I am looking for.

One of the lowest out there if not the lowest is Paul David Kennamer from Valor. I would love to see him in a top tier quartet.

Mike Holcomb and Paul David Kenamer are the two lowest (roughly lowest C on piano). David Hester and Christian Davis are more or less tied for the second spot (roughly lowest F). The rest go down about to the lowest A-flat consistently, with lower notes occasionally.

I don't care how low a bass can go if he can't sing. Too many SG fans seem concerned with the low notes and not quality singing, or a guy who can jump up and sing a baritone range part, like George Younce used to do. Good singing and really low notes don't always mix. I have to say that of those who can hit really low notes, like C1, and can sing besides, Mike Holcomb is my personal favorite.

I do not disagree with you, but my question was who of those I named or did not name is the lowest. All the ones I have seen named in this thread can sing. I take it your answer is Mike Holcomb. I wish the Inspirations would get to our part of the country sometime so I could hear him in person. Again, I totally agree that low notes that do not harmonize properly are not pleasant to the ear. I will take the harmony anytime.

The 2 lowest basses that are still singing and touring are Aaron McCune of Gold City and Mike Holcombe of the Inspirations.

Definitely David Hester....and yes, he does hit that double-low C, below the F mentioned above by someone else.

Daniel I'm just curious. Do you have perfect pitch or do you have some instrument to check pitch? I certainly don't have perfect pitch, but my daughter does. In college other students were always testing her by asking the pitch of all sorts of non musical sounds.
I don't know which bass sings lowest, but I enjoy all of those mentioned that I have heard. My favorite is David Hester.

No; I wish I did. I do have a decent sense of relative pitch; i.e., if I know a song is pitched in the key of C, I could probably tell you which note the tenor is hitting by its distance from C.
So what I will do is determine the key of the song at a keyboard (piano or digital) and figure it out from there. But since it's not perfect pitch, I do make mistakes sometimes.

You're right Joe's a great bass singer. He can certainly hit the low notes with ease. But...

Sing2him, you're right. The seat rattling is just when the low frequency crosses over from the main house speakers to the 'subs'. But, if your voice can't produce that certain frequency, the sub will never fire, and the seats won't rattle!

Fro what I've heard, Mike Holcomb, however when I heard the Dove Brothers in concert a few months ago, David Hester clearly was not going as low as he could. So, I think they could both match up pretty well.
However, I could be biased, as these are my top favorite bass singers and groups.

I'm not sure Eric goes quite as low as some of the others --- but he sure has a wonderful sound when he does sing the low notes --- or the higher ones, for that matter!!
