Legacy Five pianist Roger Bennett died today as a result of complications encountered through his long battle with leukemia. He was 48 years old.

Born March 10, 1959, Roger grew up in Strawberry, Arkansas. In November of 1979, Roger fulfilled his life-long dream of being a part of professional Southern Gospel music when he was invited by Glen Payne and George Younce to join the legendary Cathedral Quartet. Though he would leave the group for two years (1987-1989) to serve as the president of Journey Records, Roger was the group's pianist at the time of the quartet's retirement in 1999.

Following the retirement of the Cathedrals, Roger and fellow Cathedrals member Scott Fowler launched Legacy Five. In 2004, Roger fulfilled another dream (having his own successful quartet) when readers of Singing News voted Legacy Five as the Favorite Traditional Male Quartet.

Although an excellent singer, Roger is best remembered as pianist--and often a comedian--for the Cathedrals and Legacy Five. Roger received the Singing News Fan Award for Favorite Southern Gospel pianist 14 years in row (1993-2006).

Songwriting was another forte' of Roger Bennett. Many of his songs appeared on the recordings of the Cathedrals, Legacy Five and many others. His writing talent was not limited to just songs, however. Roger was a contributing editor to Singing News, writing "Midnight Meditations."

Roger leaves behind his wife (Debbie), their children (Chelsea and Jordan) and father (Doug). Funeral arrangements are pending.

His courage and his unstoppable faith will be as much of a legacy as his music. My prayers are with the Bennet family...we have all lost a great man..but praise God he is now safely home free from suffering and pain.

Some of the greatest concerts I have ever seen were those of the Cathedral Quartet. What a combination they had when Scott and Roger were part of that group!

DJSfromCleveland -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 10:53:32 AM)

He is now with our Lord, as well as reuniting with George and Glen. What a Meeting!

also, think of the beautiful music in heaven with Roger Bennett and Anthony Burger both there.

The chills are going up and down my spine and I cannot believe my eyes. I just started playing his solo on Legacy Five’s song “Home Free.” That song is now more poignant than ever, and expresses my feelings more than anything I could say.

quote:

Home free, eventually
At the ultimate healing we will be home free
Home free, oh, I’ve got a feeling
At the ultimate healing we will be home free

gaylel1 -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 10:55:30 AM)

My prayers and my heart goes out to the family. By reading the threads regarding his health issues, (and I'm not really into SG so much, but I am just getting into the genre) this man was truly a legacy in the SG scene.

Fans of his, be encouraged that he did recived his healing, and that is he went home with our Lord.

Those were my first thoughts when I found out, too. He is home and he has had the ultimate healing.

sgf_brad -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 11:12:59 AM)

To quote one of his best songs..."At the crossing of Jordan, true healing begins!" We will all miss Roger's playing, singing, writing, and comedy, but most of all we will miss ROGER. My prayers are with the Bennett family as well as with Legacy Five.

Maybe he and Anthony are getting ready for Pianorama in Heaven!!!

[:(][:(][:(]I know you are in a better place, but the hurt of your passing remains.......Roger, you will truly be missed!!!![:(][:(][:(]

To me, the most chilling line in that song is,
"Sometimes the good die young, it's sad but true"

savannahgirl -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 11:23:37 AM)

I am so stunned, I really believed he would make it through just like always. [&o] I was reading his post from last September and he was saying that by March he should be done with the treatment and be home. You know, he was right. He doesn't have to face treatments anymore and he is HOME. My heart is aching and am full of sadness for his family, and for us the fans. [:(]

Seaton -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 11:28:28 AM)

I really don't have the words to express the true hero Roger Bennett was to so many people, even beyond the Southern Gospel community. My prayers are extended to his family in this time.

How true...

quote:

2. Out in the corridor we pray for life
A mother for her baby, a husband for his wife
Sometimes the good die young, it's sad but true
While we pray for one more heartbeat, the real comfort is in you

(Chorus)
Home free, eventually
At the ultimate healing we will be home free
Home free, oh, I’ve got a feeling
At the ultimate healing we will be home free

Two pianists defined their generation of Southern Gospel to the point that the fans have voted one or the other Favorite Pianist for the past generation. And now they have both been promoted to Glory...

I am so glad that they voted Roger Bennett into the Hall of Fame in time, while he was still with us.

tanks00 -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 11:45:22 AM)

my prayers and sympathies go out to debbie, his kids and dad, i know that they will need big hugs and shoulders for the next few days and weeks. i know the angels welcomed him with open arms as soon as his last breath was over, and can you imagine the piano wars going on right now with him, anthony burger, wally varner etc etc etc,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and the singing and praising God.[sm=angel.gif]

Homeland

by Roger Bennett

You beckoned to my loved ones and how my tears did flow
And though I tried, I could not hide how it hurt to see them go
But now I know that they left this world and just moved to a better place
And someday you will call me too and I’ll see them face to face

Thanks Roger

danielmount -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 11:59:27 AM)

Wow, that was appropriate.

So many of Roger's songs are appropriate for the occasion. It's like he spent his life getting ready for eternity...and he was ready.

Jeff_from_Kentucky -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:00:04 PM)

I know he's in a better place than we are but I can't stop crying.

danielmount -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:03:51 PM)

Roger was the only other person besides George and Glen to tour for more than ten years with the Cathedrals (1979-99, except for two years).

Mark Trammell, George Amon Webster, and Ernie Haase all put in nine or ten years with the group, but Roger Bennett stayed almost twice that.

DJSfromCleveland -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:20:38 PM)

I can just see visions of Glen and George come running to meet Roger in heaven!

danielmount -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:22:32 PM)

Now I'm listening to Roger Bennett's song "We are Home" from Legacy Five's first project. I believe we're allowed to quote one verse and chorus on this board:

2. For years we had lived in a place not our own
Occupied country, the enemy's throne
Never belonging and so out of place
Constantly striving to finish this race
Now we are standing as trophies of grace
Anxiously awaiting a glimpse of His face
The veil has been lifted, the glass has been cleared
With loud hallelujahs the King has appeared

(Chorus)
We are home
Safely home
The Sacrifice given, my sins all forgiven
Calvary has won, we are home

Smokymtnsanta -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:23:57 PM)

Our Prayers are with the Bennett family during this time of loss. Roger was one of the greatest piano players ever in any type of music. Now playing in that Heavenly Band.
God Bless

L5Ropeholder -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:31:33 PM)

He is now safe in the arms of Jesus, what an awesome thought to embrace our savior! Like Roger said, either way, whatever the outcome, it was a win win situation. At the last concert I saw him at, last summer, he looked straight at me when he said that. He was so passionate that night, and delivered the gospel like I had never heard him do before. I will sorely miss him. I thank God for giving him to us for as long as we had him. Now he is kicking up gold dust on the streets in Glory.

goldcityquartetfan -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:37:02 PM)

People like Roger only come along once every so often. He was an amazing entertainer and piano player but more than that he was a good man. I first met him at NQC many years ago. He was busy doing something but stopped to talk with me like we had grown up together. He will missed by so many. My regret is that future generations have lost one of the greats way to soon.

Ps103 -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/17/2007 12:45:37 PM)

His family is in my prayers.
