Oh, my...... This was a complete shock!!!!! [&o] I was blessed to meet him on several occasions, (my mom was a Bennett, and the last two times I saw him, he remembered us) and he was always a sincere Christian.

I, truly, am jealous of him at this moment... PRAISE GOD for SALVATION!!! We'll see him again, and he'll be WHOLE!!

Does anyone know if they will be streaming Roger's service via internet?

MissGizmo -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/18/2007 11:48:02 PM)

One of the things that I told Roger last Memorial Day in Nashville was how my dog Gizmo was alwas into things she should not be. Instead of yelling at her, I would pray for him. I assured him that I had done this in the past, and still was doing lots of praying for him because the dog was still doing things she should not be doing. When I showed Roger her picture, he just looked at it, smiled, and said "I can see why you are doing a lot of praying". We both laughed at that statement. He decided that she just looked like a dog that would cause someone to either pray or yell at them. Today when Gizmo did something I started to pray for Debbie and the children. I'm sure Gizmo will help me to pray for them often .

My prayers are with Debbie and the children. Roger was an inspriation to all who heard his powerful testimony. We discovered my sister had leukemia 23 Sept 2006. We discussed Rogers illness and hoped she would have some of the success he had. That was not to be we lost her within three weeks. We are so thankful for the time we shared with her.
Roger will live on in his music. His job is not finished yet.

March 19, 2007
The Celebration

I am home in TN, and will be making all of the final arrangements today. Please be in prayer for our family, as the realization is setting in more and more each day.

We will have a celebration of Roger's life and his homegoing on Wed., March 21, at 2 pm. It will be held at Brentwood Baptist Church in Brentwood, TN. Visitation will also be held at the church on Tues. evening from 6-9 pm, and 1 hour prior to the service on Wed.

There will also be a memorial service held on Saturday, Mar. 24 at 2 pm at the high school gymnasium in Strawberry, AR. This will be a replay of the Wed. service.

Arrangements are being handled by Williamson Memorial Funeral Home in Franklin, TN. Burial will be at Williamson Memorial Gardens, at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roger's name to the Southern Gospel Music Trust Fund. (Details to follow on that, I don't have all of the info right now.) This is a fund to help those who are in the Southern Gospel industry who may need to have expenses covered above what they are able to manage. They made a contributrion to the Roger Bennett Benefit/Medical Fund in the past.

More posts will follow in the next few days. Until then, know that God is holding us in His arms, and keeping us

In His Grip,

Roger has won the victory!! I am so happy for him to no longer be suffering down here on this earth but to be celebrating in Heaven. However, I am so sorry for his family. It is never easy to loose a loved one. May each of you feel God's presence surrounding you with comforting arms. I will keep both the family and the L5 family in my prayers.[:(]

Roger.... a legacy!

He is home!!!

danielmount -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/19/2007 12:12:26 PM)

I posted this on my blog this morning, but I think I'll post it here as well:

Over the last few days, several fond memories of Roger Bennett have come to mind.

Via a Cathedrals compilation project, Roger Bennett introduced me to Southern Gospel piano playing. “I’m in the Gloryland Way” was my first exposure to what a Southern Gospel piano solo sounds like. Even now, I’m still blown away by his rendition of that song.

I remember listening to the Fan Awards live on my local radio station in 2005, I think. Roger told the audience he’d made a deal with God that if he could just see his kids graduate from high school, God could take him Home. He said that earlier that year, he had been able to see his son walk the aisle, and God had granted his request. At this point, he had the audience in the palm of his hand, and I doubt there was a dry eye in the house. But just as quick as that, he turned things around. He said he’d told God that he wanted to re-negotiate his agreement (”maybe grandkids?”). Of course, the audience burst laughing. Only a Roger Bennett could pull that off.

But of all my favorite Roger Bennett memories, one stands head and shoulders above the rest. In mid-2004, I first discovered Southern Gospel music and the local SG radio station. One night I turned on the radio and heard applause between the songs. It didn’t take me long to figure out that this must be the National Quartet Convention I’d read about, and that my local radio station must be carrying it live.

Legacy Five came on, and I was impressed. I knew that of the three members of the final Cathedrals lineup, two were members of that group. When Roger Bennett told his testimony and introduced “Whispers in the Night,” it was a powerful moment. Legacy Five was greeted by a “standing ovation and then some” and prepared to leave the stage.

But just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, Signature Sound came on stage. Ernie Haase asked Legacy Five to stay on the stage, and the two groups sang “Oh What a Savior” together.

Now I was pretty new to Southern Gospel, but I knew a thing or two. I knew that the Cathedrals were my favorite group, bar none, and that even for a National Quartet Convention, this was something out of the ordinary.

I can still hear Ernie saying, “It’s been a long time, Roger. Let’s do it like we..like we used to.” And that’s just what they did.

That was to my knowledge the final time Roger, Ernie, and Scott ever shared the same stage.

I’ve said before that I was never fortunate enough to hear the Cathedrals live and in person. But as I sat by my radio late that September night, for a few shining moments I knew what it must have been like.

Thanks for the memories, Roger.

THIS WORLD, HOWEVER BEAUTIFUL
WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE
THE PLACE THAT WE WOULD CALL OUR HOME
FOR ALL ETERNITY.
AND THOUGH WE WOULD CHOOSE NOT TO LEAVE
OUR LOVING GOD KNOWS BEST
AND IN IS TIME HE LIFTS US
TO A PLACE OF PEACE AND
May God ease your hour of sorrow and surround you with his love...
My prayers are with Roger's family, friends and all that loves him.
With love in Christ.

I just want to say that when I heard about Roger, my heart sunk to my knees. I had to call my mother and tell her what had happened. We cried on the phone together for hours. I mean, this was a man I thought was immortal. I knew he wasn't, but still, I admired him. I grew up listening to The Cathedrals and hearing Roger bang on the ivories. Well, the only thing we know now is that he's up there with all the other singers, musicians and he's probably pushing Anthony Burger off the bench telling him "Hey, boy. I missed you. Now let me show you how to do it." My prayers are with the Bennett family.

And don't forget, he is wearing his crown and his brand new robe of white and he's saying "I've made it, thank God I've made it!"

God bless each and everyone.

I didn't know who Roger Bennet was, but this thread caught my attention last night, and I followed a couple of the links, one to his blog. I got caught up reading the story of his long battle with the cancer and all the ups and downs. I ended up reading his entire blog from when it began. It was amazing how much faith he and his wife had and the peace you could feel in their writings. Even in the midst of everything they were facing, their trust in the Lord was so apparent, and it was a blessing to read. You couldn't help but be moved by their strength and the words they shared about their situation. It's no wonder he was loved and admired so much by all of you.

My prayers are with his family and those of you who knew and loved him.

ScottWiggins -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/19/2007 4:20:05 PM)

Just a quick excerpt from my personal tribute to Roger Bennett:
quote:

I first knew who Roger was through his association with the Cathedrals, my all-time favorite singing group and one of the classiest and best in their or any other genre. However, I enjoyed several occasions of chatting with him at the record table, where I learned that he was not only my brother’s age, but that he and I shared a birthday, March the 10th. And he was not only pleasant and kind to me, but to all who met him similarly, combining an engaging and entertaining stage performer with a genuine, warm, approachable person off-stage. I always appreciated that about Roger.

I hadn’t checked the Southern gospel world online this weekend, so I didn’t hear about Roger’s passing until a listener called in to my Sunday Morning Gospel program around 7AM yesterday to request L5’s “Strike Up the Band” in memory of Roger. Talk about knocking your feet out from under you! I used much of my remaining air time to play songs Roger had written and sung over the years, culminating with “Healing”. In the end, I couldn’t help but call to remembrance the scripture from I Corinthians 13:13…”And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (NKJ)” Roger’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ would safely deliver him to heaven, his blessed hope, and his love remains with us for as long as his family, friends, and fans remember him.

I must say that I was also very shocked to hear about Roger's passing. It really does hurt when we lose someone we love. But, praise the Lord there is also joy and comfort to know he is now whole!!

Man, talk about shocked when I logged on here this morning. I knew he was in the ICU, but I (and probably everyone else here) thought he would pull through it like he did every other time. My prayers tonight are with his family and friends.

singLOUD -> RE: Roger Bennett Passes Away (3/19/2007 8:03:01 PM)

I have been out of pocket this weekend, so just logged on and found out about Roger's passing. I am grieved and intrigued. Grieved by the knowledge that so many are feeling this loss so deeply (as am I), especially his family and friends, for whom I join others in prayer. Intrigued by thoughts of that joyous homecoming Roger wrote about so often.

Roger and I are the same age and have both been married 25 years. There the similarity ends. I have admired Roger since 1989, when I bought my first Cathedrals tape, and have followed him closely over the years. I have used his Midnight Meditations to lead devotional times at work, have sung his songs in concert, even quoted him in sermons. I even bought his piano instructional video (a lost cause in my case!). Mostly though, I just enjoyed his ministry, as if it was all meant to encourage and uplift specifically me, which it did.

I feel fortunate that last year, when L5 made a rare foray down to LA, Roger was able to come along. His performance (despite being hobbled by an ankle cast) was delightful. He played with vigor and skill, he sang with passion and style, he MC'd with humor and grace, and had us all eating out of his hand. He was a truly special man. I can only hope to emulate his classy brand of living out his faith.

Finally, this time-starved, mostly-lurker, forum member would like to thank this online "family" for keeping us all posted on Roger's struggles by sharing updates, posting Roger's and Debbie's letters, keeping a prayer schedule, linking to blogs and articles I would never have time to find myself etc. It made me feel connected to Roger (and to y'all) in a way I never would have been able to do on my own. Thanks.

Mark Rodgers (zzzzzzzz)
