Why doesnt groups that have their own bands get to play on the cds?????? They do it because being a good studio musician and a good live musician are two entirely different things. Live musicans have to be able to add lots of exciting fills to a soundtrack (usually), or else play well with a band. Studio musicians are paid to play for albums because (1) groups can pay for studio time by the hour and (2) studio musicians are so good that they can look at the music and get it perfectly in one or two takes. Basically, groups do it as a cost-cutting measure.

It's just my opinion, but I think the Kingsmen band would sound really good on a studio cd. They sound great live and I think they would sound great on cd.

He is a living legend in the music world, with a large following of devoted listeners. I guess he would be classified as pop/rock, but many of his most famous songs have a beach sound. His Christmas album is one of my very favorites. He is a best selling author, one of only seven to make No. 1 on the best sellers lists in both fiction and non-fiction. Also a successful restaurant chain entrepreneur. Check out the wikepedia entry, but it doesn't completely capture his personna.

He is quite the talented musician, but unfortunately he has the reputation (deserved or not?) as the world's most legendary loveable drunk. Most likely this is because of the success of his most well known song/line "Wasting away again in Margeritaville(sp)." He is so well known, he is mentioned in other singers' songs as the "grand-daddy" of amiable, laid back drunks (i.e. in George Strait's "It's 5 oclock somewhere"). Funny, I read somewhere that he hardly drinks at all. Hard to see how he could be so productive/prolific if he did. zzzzzzzzz

Jimmy Buffet is apparently perceived differently by different people, and his music can accomodate a wide range of tastes. This is probably best exemplified by the title of his collected hits: Boats, Beaches, Bars and Ballads. I personally like the ballads, like Come Monday and He Went To Paris (the best secular song ever written). and the funny songs, like The Great Filling Station Holdup and Cheeseburger In Paradise. But my real astonishment was that daniel had never heard of him. I mean, I may (or may not) like Shakespeare, or Steinbeck, or Tom Clancy, or Mozart, or the Beatles, or u2, but I've heard of them. It just made me feel old. , which I'm not. Really, I'm not. I'm not.

Daniel, Where is Ernie Phillips these days? Is he singing professionally? I've not heard much of him since he left the Kingsmen way back when? What about Haskell Cooley of the Cathedrals from the 70's? Thanks, Jason

Haskell Cooley sings part-time with his wife: http://www.cathedralstribute.com/members_hc www.geocities.com/haskellcooley/ Thanks I've always wondered about Ernie. I grew up listening to him and have come to measure most tenors by him. I realize that he could squeal with the best.............but, one could also state that he was one of the smoothest tenors of his time as well as one of those who could go high and still keep it smooth waaaaay on up the scale. Thanks again, Jason

You're welcome! After listening to "Crossing Time," I would say that he could well be one of the smoothest tenors of all time.

ORIGINAL: L5FanLady Daniel, Is Ben Harris the owner of Southern Sound? If not, what is he? He is the lead singer and manager. I assume he's the owner as well, but that might not be a safe assumption given the recent Monument/Tribute confusion.

All right. Dr. Daniel wants to ask you a question. Which of you can name the year the Cathedrals first recorded "Oh What a Savior"? You get bonus points (smileys) if you can name the project and the featured soloist on the song.
