In regard to my question about the tenor singer for J D Sumner and the Stamps in the early 90's, it is not Rick Strickland that I saw on RFD tv. I saw the Stamps perform the same year J D passed away and Rick was with them then. The person I am asking about predated Rick. Possibly the time frame may be very late 80's, as I am not sure when Rick started. This person is heavier than Rick, and also had a mustache.

Here's a few for you to ponder: - What individual/group has won the most fan awards in SG history?
- Has a song ever fallen off of the SG charts and then reappeared a few months later? (Is that even possible with the Singing News Chart setup the way it is?)
- What "professional" SG artist has sung with the most groups?

Up until 1988, JD was in the Masters V, so it should be one of those three. providencegospel, you ask excellent questions, and I will get to them later today.

I've got a question. Two questions, actually. They're both about the Fan Awards. 1. Has there ever been a tie in a category before, like the tie between Signature Sound and the Insporations? 2. Has a group or person ever given someone else their award, like the Perrys giving their award to The Crabb Family?

I remember that happening, but if you want to know who, I'll have to look into it. The person who won the award is still listed in the books, although the person to whom the trophy is given keeps the trophy. I'll look up what info I've compiled on Jason and Debbie later.

I'm sure this question does not belong here but I am going to ask since you have so much information. I teach a class of teens in a BIBLE Club at my church. I need to find some crafts that boys and girls can do that are something they would like, do not cost a large sum of money, and can be done in a week or two. Any ideas will be welcome. Thank you for any help you are able to give.

Daniel Did you know that there were actually two ladies who sang the ladies part in the Stamps. Here is the tenors/alto's in the JD era of the Stamps prior to Steve Warren. Steve actually turn down the tenor job in the 70's according to JD. Also Dave Rowland of the country music group sang baritone for the Stamps prior to his Country Music career. Jim Hill (1965-1968) Bill Baize (1971-1976) JD's Wife, Mary's favorite Stamp Tenor Ronnie Booth (1976) Gary “Buck” Buckles (1976-1978) Sandra Steele (1978-1979) Jennifer O’Brian (1979-1980) I don't think I missed any of them. It maybe wrong information but I think one of the ladies was Ed Enoch's second wife ( either Sandra or Jennifer) who went on to sing back- for Dolly Parton after Jd retired the Stamps in 1980 I too love the Cats but over all my favorite group is the Stamps of the JD era. I don't care much for the Stamps of 2006 PB

I believe Rick Warren is the name I was looking for. I think I know what Jerry Trammel looks like and the tenor I saw was not him. Thanks.

In answer to L5FanLady's question, I hope you don't mind me doing this Daniel, I'm pretty sure that Gerald has said in concerts that Jason is part CHEROKEE indian. So, I believe that davidpb was correct.

I don't have data for complete charts, but as far as #1 hits go, interesting things have happened. For example, Jimmy Swaggart's rendition of "There is a River" was a #1 hit in July 1972, at which point it started falling off the charts. Then it reappeared the next year, climbing back to the #1 position in February 1973. Then it went down again, giving place to big hits like the Goodmans' "Lighthouse" and "He Pilots My Ship." But come Summer 1973, it re-appeared a third time, climbing back to the #1 position in July and August 1973. There are plenty of other examples. The Inspirations' "When I Wake Up to Sleep No More" was a #1 hit from April through October 1974, fell from the #1 spot, and came back up to #1 in December 1974. The Rambos' "Tiny" was a #1 hit in March and in May 1972. The Goodmans' "The Lighthouse" was a #1 hit in June 1972, August-September 1972, and in March 1973. "Jesus is Coming Soon" was a #1 hit in January-March 1970 and June-August 1970. "Come Morning" was a #1 hit for the Rex Nelon Singers in June 1980, August 1980, and September 1980. Exchanging months with it was the Happy Goodmans' "Better Hurry Up," which was a #1 hit in September and November of that year. There are other examples, but you didn't ask for a book!

I believe that would be the Cathedrals, who won about 80 Singing News Fan Awards. This is not counting awards that their members won after they left--George Younce's with the Old Friends, Ernie Haase's with Signature Sound, Mark Trammell's with his trio, Gerald Wolfe's with Greater Vision, and Roger Bennett's with Legacy Five. (Scott Fowler hasn't won any individual awards since starting Legacy Five and moving to lead.) Food for thought--of the 5 major "position awards" (tenor, lead, baritone, bass, pianist), three were won by former Cathedrals (Ernie Haase, Gerald Wolfe, and Roger Bennett), and the other two were won by members of one of their groups (Rodney Griffin with Greater Vision, Tim Duncan with Signature Sound). As far as an individual record, George Younce won Bass of the Year 14 times, and I believe that is the record. He also took home Male Singer of the Year twice (1999 and 2000), so he has 16 total awards. Roger Bennett is on track to pass him, he has won favorite instrumentalist/pianist every time since 1993 (13 awards).

That's a tough call, especiall since you didn't add the qualifier professional to "most professional groups." So here's a few people who have been with six or more groups: Mark Trammell has been a member of The Senators, The Kingsmen, The Cathedrals, Greater Vision, Gold City, and the Mark Trammell Trio (6 groups). Nick Bruno, now in charge of Song Garden Music Group along with Robbie Hiner, was pianist for quite a few groups in his day: Eastman Quartet, Keystone Quartet, Rebels Quartet, Senators Quartet, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, and Kingsmen Quartet (six groups). Rick Fair has sung baritone or bass for six groups: Commanders Quartet; Senators Quartet (as bass with Jim Hamil at lead; as baritone with London Parris at bass); Rebels Quartet; Blackwood Quartet; Hovie Lister & the Statesmen; and today, Palmetto State Quartet. Harold Gilley has sung bass for six groups thus far: Palmetto State Quartet, Gospel Gold, Mercy River Boys, Blackwood Quartet, Southern Gold, and Danny Funderburk and Mercy's Way Legendary lead singer Jim Hammill sang lead for six groups: Songmasters, Oak Ridge Quartet, Weatherfords, Blue Ridge Quartet (along with George Younce!), Rebels Quartet, and, finally, The Kingsmen. Aaron “Tex” McCune may have been born in 1981, but he has already sang bass for these six groups: Journeymen Quartet, Noblemen Quartet, Faithmen Quartet, Anchormen Quartet, Palmetto State Quartet, and presently Gold City. David Reese, who played piano and sang baritone, performed with these groups: Blue Ridge Quartet, Rangers Quartet, Imperial Quartet (Dallas, TX), Deep South Quartet, Harvesters Quartet, and the Rangers Trio. Glen Payne sang tenor or lead for the following six or seven groups: Stamps-Baxter Quartet, Lester Stamps Quartet, Stamps All-Stars, The Stamps-Ozark Quartet, The Weatherford Quartet, The Cathedral Trio, and The Cathedral Quartet. George Younce sang with the following seven groups: The Spiritualaires, The Watchmen, Florida Boys, The Weatherford Quartet, The Blue Ridge Quartet, The Cathedral Quartet, Old Friends Quartet. Jerry Pilgrim has sung bass for the following seven groups: Watchmen Quartet, Masterpeace Quartet (with Kingsmen member Tony Peace), Harbingers Quartet, Safely Anchored, The Homesteaders, The Harvesters Quartet, Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet. Hovie Lister performed with the following groups: Sand Mountain Quartet, Rangers Quartet, The LeFevres, Homeland Harmony Quartet, Hovie Lister & the Statesmen, Masters V, Palmetto State Quartet, Grand Ole Gospel Reunion Quartet. That's eight groups. But as for Bobby Clark and Jack Toney, I'll just let you count: Bobby Clark sang tenor for these groups: Deep South Quartet, Rangers Quartet, Oak Ridge Quartet, Weatherford Quartet, The Cathedral Trio, The Cathedral Quartet, Dixie Echoes, The Cathedral Quartet, and Men of Music. Jack Toney sang lead for these groups: Prophets Quartet, Florida Boys (filled in for Les Beasley), Speer Family, Dixie Echoes, Hovie Lister & the Statesmen, Rosie Rozell & the Searchers, The Southmen, Masters V, J.D. Sumner & the Stamps Quartet, The Legends, Hovie Lister & the Statesmen, Grand Ole Gospel Reunion Quartet.
