I'm with you. I haven't been canning in the quantities you have but the stuff just keeps coming. I kept thinking I was done with broccoli and then there'd be more I couldn't ignore. Finally cured that though, we tilled the garden under! But even when I was getting ready to till and was chopping off the broccoli plants there was STILL broccoli spears I couldn't ignore. lol There will still be some apples when we get back from our trip and the grapes I plan to pick up on our way home. THEN I'll be done.

I hope to get some grapes from Hubby's great-aunt's house. If I do, I'll be making jelly! I still have some figs frozen...gotta can those. I also need to can the blackberries in the freezer. *sigh* I need a bigger canner and the "right" tools! Thankfully I'm going shopping out of town next month so maybe I can find what I need.

Just thought I'd give this thread a bump since it's almost summer time and we'll be bringing in fresh veggies and fruits...and hopefully doing some canning!

Fruit syrup for ice cream, pound cake, pancakes, french toast, waffles, etc. Basically similar to making jelly only not using something like SureJel and probably less sugar. Anyway, if you don't know what it is, you're likely not interested. Tricia, I knew we should have lived closer to each other. I could certainly help you out with those jars and the raspberry jam. Yeah, probably better give the jars to someone who will use them. I'm always hunting jars at garage sales and such.

quote:
ORIGINAL: ta_mosquito I got 18 half-pint jars (the somewhat decorative looking ones) off of Freecycle recently. They'd be great for jam, except neither Kevin nor I like jam! So... what would someone can in decorative half-pints? Or I could re-Freecycle them... and the next person WILL be thankful that I ran them through the dishwasher! The small, decorative type jars are good to use when you are making something to give as gifts. A small jar of homemade jelly/jam, etc, with a packet of biscuit mix and a bisquit cutter in a cute basket makes a nice kitchen shower gift, for instance. Or make jam/jelly, salsa, whatever, and use for Christmas gifts for those acquaintances that you may want to give a small gift to, but don't want to spend a lot of money on. Jam/jelly/honey with a loaf of homemade bread makes a nice small gift, too.

Joyful, honestly, after looking at the pulp all cooked up, I got a bit grossed out. I like certain jams but mostly jellies. I only gave this jelly to a few people that I thought would want to at least taste it (the lady who gave me the plums, my mom--who is like me and likes tart things, and Austin's grandmother--whom I called a couple of times in the process to make sure I was doing it right). Even though they all really liked it, I probably won't give anymore out to other people because of the tartness factor. Funny you should mention oatmeal, Austin stirred some plum jelly into his oatmeal on Monday. That cake sounds interesting! Hope you have a wonderful trip and visit!!!

I miss canning! All my stuff for it is still in Indiana. We also don't have a garden, so I don't know how cheap it would be.
