Our Pastor is wanting our praise team to do about 10 minutes of worship music at Sunday Morning worship. We do southern gospel style singing, so I was wondering if any of you have ideas on which songs suit this style best; are there cd’s out there to purchase; do you mp3’s to send me; etc? I would appreciate any help you can give me. My e-mail address is: royce@crosstel.net Thanks! Royce

Mike Speck has created some great Southern Gospel worship chorus from some of the SG standards. Check out his website.

I have a CD which is actually called Southern Gospel Worship. It's not a soundtrack but has some good songs on it from a variety of SG artists.

Sure you can but if you perform copyrighted music in a church service, the church needs to either get a release or to contract with a group like Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) which handles the copyright issues for them. If the church is singing a song from a hymnal, the licensing issue have probably already been covered. http://www.ccli.com/

I think you are mistaken on this. You don't have to have a release to perform music unless it is being recorded. That goes for recording just for church purposes, recorded for internet, television or radio, etc. If that were the case every regional group singing with tracks on the weekends is in violation, and probably a lot of pro groups too for that matter. I understand that it is only illegal when the song is recorded. quote:

That's what I thought too.. If you can't do this, then there would be NO market whatsoever for the tracks that groups sell, and that stores sell. I took it that buying the track gave you permission to use it in performances. It would be silly to have to buy the track, then pay a fee to use it. I mean afterall this isn't college football.....where you have to donate to the school, and then buy your season tickets.

I think a CCLI license covers churches kinda like any restaurant or Concert hall or anywhere else with music has to get an ASCAP and BMI license.

Ordinarily, a license IS required for a public performance of a copyrighted song, BUT the copyright law specifically EXEMPTS worship services from this requirement. See: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#110 quote:
110. Limitations on exclusive rights: Exemption of certain performances and displays43 Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, the following are not infringements of copyright: ... (3) performance of a nondramatic literary or musical work or of a dramatico-musical work of a religious nature, or display of a work, in the course of services at a place of worship or other religious assembly; - - - - - Although the CCLI website has already been listed, there appears to be some confusion over what a CCLI license covers. A CCLI license is not similar to an ASCAP license for public performance, because no license is required for a public performance during a worship service. The CCLI license covers: Printing songs, hymns and lyrics in bulletins, programs, liturgies and songsheets for use in congregational singing. Creating customized songbooks or hymnals for use in congregational singing. Creating overhead transparencies, slides or any other format whereby song lyrics are visually projected (such as computer graphics and projection) for use in congregational singing. Arranging, printing and copying your own arrangements (vocal and instrumental) of songs used for congregational singing, where no published version is available. Recording your worship services (audio or video) provided you only record live music. Accompaniment tracks cannot be reproduced. You may charge up to $4 each for audiocassette tapes and CDs, and $12 each for videotapes and DVDs.

I understand that it is only illegal when the song is recorded. Yes, performances in the course of an ordinary worship service are exempt. Even ASCAP agrees that is exempt, and it's their job to collect royalties wherever they can. quote:
http://www.ascap.com/licensing/licensingfaq.html Permission is not required for music played or sung as part of a worship service unless that service is transmitted beyond where it takes place (for example, a radio or television broadcast). Performances as part of face to face teaching activity at a non-profit educational institutions are also exempt. Now, the $50,000 question is whether or not a ticketed concert qualifies as a "worship service."

Royce The Brentwood-Benson choral company has two products that blend Southern Gospel with P&W. http://www.brentwood-benson.com/product.aspx?ProjectCode=457571171 http://www.brentwood-benson.com/product.aspx?ProjectCode=457571336 Both are excellent, but may be somewhat challenging (depending on the skill level of your praise team). You could always buy the accompaniment CDs and come up with your own vocal arrangements if the arrangements in the books are too complicated.

If any of you in the South can have P&W music in the Southern Style, thank your lucky stars. Pastors these days are taught that Contemp. P&W is the only way.

How 'bout getting out the old red cover Stamps Baxter book and having a great time singing the old time songs and hymns. Works for me, and it really will be a praise and worship time if done right.
