Whiney Hair Stylists - 11/5/2008 5:29:41 PM

I have noticed something of a trend in the hair stylists I've had over the past year. I am still fairly new to this area and I have never seen, nor been around so many hair stylists who are so whiney and gossipy and talkative.

I used to go to the same hair stylist back in the Mid-West, before moving East and she was a nice woman who was skilled and friendly. She did a great job cutting my hair and was always very warm and friendly in a safe and positive way. Recently, I've had like four or five different people I've gone to in the past year since moving and they are all super chatty and all nosy trying to get to know personal details about my life and then they were super whiney and negative and complaining about stuff all the time. I feel like it's a nightmare every time I get my hair cut.

I've been the three different places so far and I am seriously wondering if there is a culture of whiney, gossipy, talkative hair stylists out East? I mean, they will just start giving me their personal opinions on the news...complain about other customers, ....complain about their family....try to be negative and gossipy..... ...I guess it's hard to explain totally unless you see what I mean, but man, it's like a trend (albeit a micro-trend for me, since I've only been to three different places).

Just today, I had a stylist who was talking non-stop and I purposely said nothing to endorse her opinions and only gave brief and friendly answers to her personal questions....Then she starts complaining (this complaining thing is a trend I've noticed around here) about her school work and talks about how incompetent her teacher is and I'm sitting there thinking "Would you please ust cut my hair!....I don't want to hear about all your problems and personal viewpoints!!!"

I truly miss my old hair stylist. She was awesome. Sweet, warm, friendly, and best of all she was highly skilled. I always got the best haircuts and best experience.

Anyone have this experience with their hair stylist(s) as well? What might you say or do to not engage them? It's not that I don't want to talk, but man, these stylists are super nosy and personal right away. I like to warm up to someone first, before I talk aout all these things.

"I find a nice quiet hair cut so relaxing. It's just like being pampered at the spa. So soothing and quiet. I just like to drift away on my own thoughts..." Then unfocus your eyes, and just blink in surprise any time she starts talking again.

I have had all guy hair stylists in the last 25 years...they don't seem to do the complaining thing that some of my friend's female stylists do, nor are they overly nosy.

I'm not sure what you can say other than to just address it and say that you'd really enjoy it if you could have some quiet time as you get your hair done since it's one of the few times you can just relax and be pampered a little. You could try not commenting, or ignoring it, but it seems with the overly chatty people like that, they are perfectly fine just to hear their own voice!

I LOVE my hair stylist..she is so professional and competent. The place I go to kind of has a policy of keeping things professional..if there is gossip....it's of the who's doing what in Hollywood type..not personal stuff.

I've never had a problem. One of my BFFs is a hair stylist, and when I am in her town for a cut, we always talk about what's going on in our lives. She has told me that a lot of times she feels like a therapist for her clients. She does a lot of listening through the day, and since she has built relationships with them, they continue to update her when she returns. She's not the complaining type.

For me for other stylists, most of the time when I visit a stylist they are generally quiet with small talk chit chat while they cut my hair. It is rare that I visit the same stylist more than once (I keep looking for a stylist as good as my friend). But the non-cut stuff has never been an issue for me.

As for your experiences, it seems like you have visited a lot of unprofessional stylists. They should never talk about another client, or their own personal drama. I had a stylist once tell me she was engaged. We talked about that for awhile because it was a very happy subject for her. And I like happy stylists. lol

hahah... funny. i am in cosmetology school.
i live in a city in florida and i attend a Christian based cosmetology school- yes, there is such a thing! (its called International Academy of Hair Design) if you want to see it.
Anyway, it's tough to hear that you haven't found the right stylist for yourself in your new hometown yet. i would suggest praying about it. i mean, we as stylists are supposed to be providing you a service. I take my job seriously... and at the same time, i think it should be fun... and relaxing as another poster put it. it is about you.. not about the stylist (except, of course thier fashion sense and skill, etc. that is the professional requirements)
anyway.. i know that where i live there are a couple salons with Christian hairstylists. one used to cut my hair... i know a couple ladies at church who do hair... they work at a mall....
i hope you can find someone you like to do your hair and develop a nice yet appropriate relationship with...
take care.

As a former stylist - let me apologize for us more chatty types!

FB mentioned that her stylist does a lot of listening in a day - that's so true. There's some kind of connection between the person in the chair and the one who has the shears in hand ready to 'change' that person. People just talk to you, maybe they're more relaxed? I don't know what it is, but it happens and I suppose after a while, as a stylist you tend to expect it and therefore try to 'break the ice' by prodding for details - yes, we've done this... sorry again.

BUT sometimes it's just where you are. I worked in one salon that was very much like that - known for being the gossip place of the town, and then I've worked in a more upscale salon that wouldn't have tolerated that kind of chatter for a moment. My suggestion - continue on in your stylist search.

I guess you could call mine chatty, but she tells me about her daughter's upcoming wedding and asks about Himself and if we have been on any trips lately--that kind of thing. Not gossipy. Just friendly.

I think it would creep me out if the person doing my hair didn't say anything

Maybe you should ask your friends about their stylists and can find one who is not gossipy that way.

My mother sort of liked the gossipy part, I think . That is what everyone did to "catch up"--go to the hairdresser.

I used to go to a barber. He was the only one in the shop who did women's hair. We occasionally chit chatted about family but most of the time he was just reminding me to put my chin down . They would often have Fox News on and I had a tendency to watch it during my cut. When he was done he called me a princess and would kiss the back of my hand. The cost of the cut was $12 and I always gave him a Twenty.

It was fun to watch men come into the shop and find a woman there. They got really quiet to find a gal invading the man space.

LOL

Definitely time to start asking friends and coworkers where they go and what kind of conversations they have with their stylists.

The lady I went to when I wore my hair short was great. She could tell if I was having a really stressful day, and would not only be quiet, but would spend a few extra minutes on the shampooing giving me the most wonderful scalp massage! It was wonderful!
