Was it just me or did you guys notice that from Thurs-Sat (maybe earlier too) at NQC there were seemingly very few product tables that had more than 1, if any, members of the group there. I'm especially referencing the top groups. I passed some of the top artists' tables multiple times from 4-6 and also while the groups were onstage. Often, after the fan awards there's a bunch of artists around, but this year there seemed to be almost nobody. Some of my favorite artists I didn't see one time. Here's wondering if the guys just get so tired that they shack up in the bus all day when they're not singing or if they just don't want to be out there?

Let me say I totally understand the long hours, but I wish there'd be at least one night that everybody would be around to visit with fellow artists/fans. What do you think?

This happened the first part of the week also. Seems the major artist don't want to hang around like they used to. Maybe they think the fans don't care about them anymore, or maybe I've got that backwards.
Noticed a lot of the groups checked out early also and wasn't there Friday and even less of them were there Saturday.

All of the Mark Trammell Trio, or at least three of the four, were at their booth at pretty much all times. I went by their booth untold times since mine was down the row from theirs, and they did a great job staffing their booth.

The Florida Boys also had at least several at their table at every time I went by.

I can think of a lot of groups like you describe, but it's always worth pointing out the good side, too!

Perhaps there is some tie between the longer distance / fewer fans and fewer artists. Perhaps it will be better next year, with more fans in the hall (hopefully).

If you've never manned a booth, you have no idea how long ten or twelve hours can be if nobody or few are coming by. I don't really count NQC, but I have spent a couple hours manning a booth at homeschool conventions, and that can get to be very, very, very long when people aren't coming by.

Most of the fans come through the exhibit hall between 4 & 6, even during these hours you did not see many artist in the booths. I know there were some exceptions. You mentioned Mark Trammell being there most of the time. When Steve wasn't there he was in his own booth. He had to work between two booths.

However, their booths were right next to each other, so he would just slip back and forth. If a fan wanted to talk to him, he was right there.

Sure, there were some pleasant exceptions especially among regional groups, but I could name a whole list of top artists that I had yet to lay eyes on the entire time I was there other than on mainstage.

One great exception is Triumphant Qt. There's hardly a time you'll pass their table when Eric Bennett, Stice, Sutton, or one of the Inmans isn't around.

Not trying to point this into ANOTHER Gaither/NQC discussion, but someone who is fairly new to the world of NQC asked me recently about how they (The Gaithers/GVB) 'acted' at their booth in years past. I think that most groups could have learned a lot from them. They usually built excitement about their appearances at their booth.

First, the booths were ALWAYS adequately manned by staffers (usually headed by Mr. George, Bill's Dad). And, then they ALWAYS had special times posted, and set aside when any or even all of the GVB or Bill & Gloria were to be in the booth. By doing so, fans could make a point to be there when their 'favorite' was going to be there, and the fans could count on them being there. That was real nice, I thought. No harrassing the staff with questions like 'When is Guy going to be here?'...etc. Of course, there were surprise appearances, but you could count on those 'planned' ones. I think ALL the groups should plan to (at least once a night) have a set time when they could all be at their booth at the same time. The groups need to remember that this is a fan driven industry. Lose the fans, lose a job...

The Dove Brothers' policy was for all the members to be in the booth from 4-6 every night, and then for the rest of each evening, they did shifts...seemed like a good policy that all groups should adopt. Of course, I'm sure there were times when they had to make exceptions to do interviews, etc., and McCray had to be in the dunking booth at one point. :o)

See:
http://www.musicscribe.com/blog/wordpress/?p=755

I did notice that some booths weren't staffed as heavily as in years past, BUT you have to weigh that against the fact that there were less fans going to the exhibit hall after 6PM than in years past. I think it will be back to normal next year when the exhibit hall is much closer to the main stage.

I believe the best time to go is early in the week, first of all...and if you're there for more than a day or two, it really isn't that difficult to talk with everyone you want to see.

The Booth Brothers, Legacy 5, Driven, The Hoppers and The Imperials were in their booths more this year than other years. I guess you just had to be there at the right time.
I have to agree that the regional artists were in their booths alot more. The entire group ie: Shiloh, Called Out, By Faith, One Reason, The Sonshiners, The Quicks, The Dills, The Holcomb Sisters, Hearts of Faith and so on and so on. I would like to encourage everyone to stop and talk to the regional artists. These may be the top groups in a few years!!!

That's the reason I like to have a Regional Group open at my concerts, and I also use a lot of groups that are not known in the area. I was the first to bring The Browns & Kings Heralds to North Georgia. The King's Heralds will be back again in 2008. Driven & The Crist Family hasn't been around here much and I'll be having them.

Getting back on topic, Libbi Perry Stuffle emailed me and said (and gave me permission to post) that the Perrys have had a group policy for the last four or five years that every member of their group has to be at the booth by 3:45 each day of NQC. They can leave to do interviews, sing on the main stage, or go to the bathroom, and she also had to leave to be in the dunking booth this year. They also had an annual appreciation dinner for their members on Tuesday, but other than that they made an effort to keep the whole group at the booth. She said "My motto is people come to your booth to see the whole group, not just two or three. I know how I would feel if I was a fan and I spent big money to come to NQC to see my favorite groups and didn't get to see all of them."

She did add that a lot of people would ask Tracy or the other members where she was and they would have to point out that she was indeed there but that the fans hadn't seen her since she was surrounded by people!

(Is it any wonder why the Perrys' booth seemed to be one of the busiest booths all week?)
