I know a fair bit about proper singing and whatnot, and I know enough that I know what my limits are. The current director of the choir at my church (that I'm part of), IMHO, doesn't know what he's doing. He gives us arrangements all the time that have me singing out of my range most of the time. I sing bass, and the choir uses SATB arrangements, but the bass parts are often too high and have me screaming or switching to falsetto to hit the notes, often in double forte. The Christmas cantata we've been working on is a good example of this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's unhealthy to have your throat hurt after singing, right? I experience this halfway through the cantata, and when I've mentioned to the director that I'm singing out of my range and my throat hurts, he blows me off. Should I quit the choir altogether until a new director comes along or just grin and bear it?
