Has anyone read this?

The writter was in a concentration camp during WWII. While marching one day Simon notices a field of sunflowers he realizes that the sunflowers mark the graves of SS soldiers. He is sadly notes in his mind that these men brutally kill his people but get a beautiful flower on their graves while one day in the near future he will be buried in a mass grave with bodies buried on top of him.

On a work detail he was brought to the bedside of a dying SS soldier and asked for forgiveness for his acts against the Jews. The writter felt that the soldier was truely repentant for the acts he had committed. He told him in detail what he had done, about his life prior to the war, his family etc. The soldier was a young man in his 20's.

The writter asks in his final sentence of the book he asks the reader "What would I have done?"

At this point, if you have not read the book, I will not tell you what the author choose to do, I will ask you to answer the question. What would you have done?

ETA: The second part of the book is a lot of peoples answers to this question. I am curious as to your answers. My daughter's 9th grade class is going to be reading this book soon.
