I'm thinking about possibly selling things on either ebay or Criagslist, or maybe some other shopping/auction site. I've never done this before, so I'm unsure of how to go about it. I don't want to auction any items, just sell them. I'm also wondering which payment method that I should ask for.

Please advise me on possible options. Thank you.

Sell on Craigslist. Clear digital photos help. Be sure and list in the appropriate category.

Insist on cash only -- no other forms of payment.

If possible, meet at a neutral location in broad daylight (doesn't work for furniture, but works for smaller items.)

Craigslist is free. Ebay takes a cut. There also is no risk that you'll sell a $50 item for a buck because nobody else bids. The price is the price.

Every time I try to sell stuff there, however, I get spammed with e-mails from people wanting to lure me into their get rich quick scheme. They figure I must be desparate for money if I am selling stuff on the net. Funny, I don't get those when I am giving something away ...

you can also try amazon.com marketplace.
i've sold through ebay and amazon. ebay i use paypal. amazon i get a credit taht get's deposited into my account. buyers pay for it to amazon and amazon takes their cut and deposits the rest into my account.

for success, clear pictures, accurate description, clear description, and willingness to answer questions prior to item being sold. also, take into consideration ahead of time what shipping will cost and include packaging materials as well. you'll wanna make sure you're ready to ship the item immediately.

Yes, what was already said above, but you know how a picture paints a 1,000 words? Things are much more likely to sell if you include a picture of the item. Also, be as descriptive as possible also.

You might go to your local library or bookstore and find a book on ebay or the other sites. They can give you specifics about how to post things online, etc.

If you put something on EBay at a "Buy Now" price, rather than auction, there's no risk of it selling for only a dollar either. Or if you want to put it on auction, you can make the starting price as high as you like.

I prefer selling on EBay, because it means your market is much much bigger. With Craigslist you're limited to local sales only.

Personally I think this should be posted in finance, but it is what it is. First I'd ask - Are you looking to sell things you have around the house (like the toys the kids didn't put away)? Or are you looking to sell as a regular income? There are many ways and places to sell stuff on line. eBay is just one option. eBay tends to nickle and dime you in fees, but you can make some serious money if you know what you're doing - however 70% of the items listed on eBay never sell, and you still have to pay listing fee. Craigslist is okay if you live in a metro area. or even well Sign advertised yard sales. You also have onlineauction.com - sell all you want for only $8 a month, and or your own website. The list of places is endless, the options of items and ways to sell are endless. Each will take a good part of a learning curve. If you've never done eBay before, I'd recommend to sign up, and also sign up for Paypal, but before you sell - so you can learn the process - buy about 5 items on eBay first.

..... I like to sell on Half.com and Amazon.com. Both these places kick in a little for shipping cost and managing inventory is easy peasy.

The best way to do it is to get set up with a PayPal account first. The cool thing is... when I got set up with PayPal and then a PayPal debit card... I qualified for 1% cash back because I had an Ebay account (half.com is a branch of ebay). HINT: you may want to set up a different email for your business transactions.

I haven't ventured into Ebay yet... the thought kinda scares me, too! I'd rather learn the ins and outs with a real body standing over my shoulder!

..... yeah. It's just a good thing. My brother has a paypal account set up under a faux name. He has to do that though.... he still has some people who 'follow' him back from his touring days! lol!

I have thought of a faux name too, but not sure if that would be a good idea or not.

That might not be a bad thing though. With Ebay and Amazon you have to deal with taking it to the post office. That sounds like a hassle. With Craigslist you can just have them come over. Since Melissa is moving that might not be a bad thing either.
