Hello Friends! My name is Richie. I am a huge Southern Gospel Music Fan, as I'm sure most of you all. One of my all time favorite groups is the Happy Goodman Family. Now, many of you will remember Howard & Vestal from the Gaither Homecoming series. In those years, they sang with a gentleman named Johnny Minnick. Watching Howard & Vestal sing with Johnny was great! They would thrill the crowds and at times lift the roof off. As good as they were, and they were good, it was the "original" Happy Goodman group that changed music. Howard and Vestal traveled with Howard's two younger brothers, Rusty & Sam. Now, many of you may remember Rusty. Rusty wrote many great Gospel songs that are still sung today; "Had It Not Been", "WHo Am I?", "Leavin' On My Mind", and many others. The one, to me, that gets lost in the shuffle is Brother Sam. Now, Sam wasn't as much of a songwriter as Rusty, he didn't have the powerhouse voice of Vestal, nor di he play the piano like Howard. Yet, Sam was an intregal part of the Happy Goodman Family's success. His humor and emceeing ability has become the hallamrk for the way modern emcees conduct a program. Though not the power voice of Vestal, Sam was a power singer with a range that could back up Vestal. His enegry on stage was effectous to the audience and smile was contagious. Until his death in 1991, there was never a Happy Goodman group without him. from the early 60's to the early 80's Sam traveled full time. Yet, with all this he is the ONLY member of that Happy Goodman foursome NOT in the Hall of Fame. I have therefore, with the blessing of his son, taken up the task to get Sam in th Hall of Fame. For more information you can copy and paste this link http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=149558063868&ref=nf I hope will gather enough support to put Sam in hi rightful place, the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Thanks Richie Friends of Sam Goodman

You might consider opening up your facebook page so a person can goto your page without having to have a facebook account or having to log in. A MySpace page or a Shoutlife.com page might be more beneficial and something more familiar to the older generation. What I don't understand, if the Goodmans were inducted, then why wasn't Sam included?

Thanks for letting me know about viewing the page. I think I have set up now where you can view whetheryou have a Facebook account or not. What I don't understand, if the Goodmans were inducted, then why wasn't Sam included? That's the million dollar question. the Happy Goodmans were inducted into the Hall of Fame as group. However, Howard, Vertal, & Rusty were all inducted as individuals, as well. Sam, like the others, deserves this same honor. The Statesmen as a group were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Yet, Hovie Lister, Big Cheif, Doy Ott, Jake Hess, Denver Crumpler all recieved individual inductions. I and a growing number feel Sam deserves his own induction. Let's make it happen! Richie

My suggestion would be for you to email Karen Peck Gooch, who is the new president of the SGMA board.

Thanks for the suggestion. The entire board will be notified. They are the ones who vote on the nominations. Thanks again. Richie

Richamania, You appear to be confusing two different organizations. The SGMA Hall Of Fame has never inducted groups, as far as I can tell from looking over their Hall Of Fame. http://www.sgma.org/hall_of_fame.htm The Gospel Music Association does induct groups, including the Happy Goodmans, but they have never inducted Howard or Sam as individuals...only Rusty and Vestal. http://www.gmahalloffame.org/ - - - - - Also, regarding voting, I'm pretty sure the SGMA membership votes on who will go into the Hall Of Fame, not just the members of the SGMA board as you have stated above.

Hey David, I believe you are right about the GMA and the SGMA. Sam was inducted into the GMA Hall of Fame as a member of Happy Goodmans. To date he has not be inducted in the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame, like Howard, Vestal, & Rusty have. It is my hope h e will go into the SGMA Hall of Fame. Sorry, I didn't make the distinction. As far as the voting goes. Each member of the SGMA recieves a nomination ballot. They are allowed to nominate one living and one deceased cadidate for the Hall of Fame. From there, the board takes the nominations and then votes on the nominations. It is in fact the board who makes the final call. Thanks again. Richie Friends of Brother Sam

I believe Richie is correct. Myself being a member of SGMA I have NEVER been given the opportunity to vote on who is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I've only been allowed to make a nomination. They often advertise that you can vote on who is inducted but you don't get the opportunity to vote.

Robert some years I have gotten a ballot but most years I haven't, one year I got the opportunity to nominate. Not really sure how all that works.

The way it works is all active SGMA members receive a nominating ballot in November. The persons receiving the highest number of nominations are presented to the Board for voting. EVERY nomination counts!
