I have had this on my mind a lot for the last few days. It is so important to raise our children and/or grandchildren up on southern gospel music. They need this influence in their lives more than ever before. Whether we like it or not, they will hear secular music at schools and even daycare centers. My 9 year old daughter can sing along to almost all of my gospel CD's and loves going to concerts with her "daddy". I love to hear her open her mouth and sing these songs. You can watch her expression and tell that she means what she is singing. With so many negative influences out there I cannot express my feelings on this enough. I was watching television the other day and saw a story about a secular female artist singing a song called "I kissed a girl and I liked it". That unnerved me!!! I told my wife about it and she told the teachers at her summer daycare to not play this song while our daughter was there. She has come home on numerous occasions singing songs that I didn't approve of that she learned at school or daycare. My wife said that she was scanning the radio last night driving home and they announced that this "kissing" song was coming on next. She stopped and listened to the song and it outaged her. It basically is saying "Hey, it's no big deal. Everyone's doing it. It's just experimenting. I kissed a girl and I like it". I for one don't want my kids thinking that this is okay. You know what is even more a slap in the face? This singer is the daughter of a preacher.

I can truly understand your feelings on this. I like most try to filter what is seen and heard but sometimes much to my dismay I can't catch or control all of it. I haven't heard that song but I know I wouldn't allow it either.

I got saved when my daughters were 6 and 3, and starting singing SG right after that. All three of my children LOVE 3 and 4 part harmony. My daughters sang with me during their teenage years and my 14 year old son's dream is to sing bass with a SG group. They were all exposed to other styles and genres of music, but were really saturated in SG while growing up and they all still love it.

When my kids were young I took them to all the SG concerts I went to. One night my sister and her two kids, my mother, my two kids and I drove about 100 miles to see the Kingsmen and Cathedrals. On the way home we hit a deer. Through a string of miraculous events we had a tow truck tow the car all the way home. My mother and I rode in the cab of the truck, the rest had to stay in the car. About half way home I asked the driver to stop and see how the kids were doing. He came back to the truck and said "They are fine. They are playing "name that tune" with Jesus songs." I thought how wonderful that at such a young age the kids are learning that SG music can be a source of comfort and joy.

I was blessed that my mother took my sister and I to singings growing up. That is how I got my introduction to SGM...in other words...when I think about my childhood memories they always include SGM. I usually take my kids too.

It is so hard not to hear the secular songs, I will be a Senior in High School, and let me tell you that is all I hear. I always ignore what I hear, because my heart belongs to God, and I want nothing to do with that part of music. Southern Gospel music is my kind of music. I thank God that my parents raised me around the Gaither Homecoming Videos, and different groups through the radio and tv...without them, my love for Southern Gospel music would have never happened. I have a little cousin who is 7 months old, and loves anything to do with music..he lights up! My grandma has a ton of Gaither Homecoming videos, and she plays them and he is literally glued to that tv screen when the music starts. Grandma and I have both decided that we are going to start now, at the young age of 7 months instilling God's music in him, so that he too, will love Southern Gospel, and turn a deaf ear to the secular world. It can change peoples lives!
