Pfizer to Leave City That Won Supreme Court Land-Use Case

From the edge of the Thames River in New London, Conn., Michael Cristofaro surveyed the empty acres where his parents’ neighborhood had stood, before it became the crux of an epic battle over eminent domain.

“Look what they did,” Mr. Cristofaro said on Thursday. “They stole our home for economic development. It was all for Pfizer, and now they get up and walk away.”

That sentiment has been echoing around New London since Monday, when Pfizer, the giant drug company, announced it would leave the city just eight years after its arrival led to a debate about urban redevelopment that rumbled through the United States Supreme Court, and reset the boundaries for governments to seize private land for commercial use.

The government fought hard to have the right to take someone's land away and now it is just a waste.

Well, I guess the important thing, at least from the vantage point of government, is that they've proven and set precedent that private property rights are meaningless and archaic notions.

And 43 other states now protect private property rights because of this incident.

This was one of the few times I felt Scalia and Thomas got it right.

There has been many instances in the abuse of emminent domain. This is an area where large corporations rely on government to bypass the free market. This keeps the corporations costs down by not having to have them bid for properties putting the property owner in control not the corp. This tactic is successfully used by big corporations, sports franchises and government to get your land.

What's sad is that the local governments never recoup all the tax benefits they give these big companies. I am sure it would have taken decades for them to have realized a repayment in terms of recouping those benefits.

Communities should never bow to corporate extortion. lol..."Do this (such as exercise eminent domain or provide tax incentives) and we will locate in your community. If not, we'll locate elsewhere"...extortion pure and simple.

I seem to remember a gentleman who had a corporation but objected to that change in eminent domain law. He tried to use eminent domain to purchase one or two of the SCotUS justices homes to force them out and hit them where it hurt. A little lesson of how wrong that was. Unfortunately he was rebuffed by local government. They said they don't do that to the folks living in their area. Seems like a double standard.
