We focus more on celebrating the feasts...if you want we can talk more about that. (I know a few others on here do that too...and are a lot more knowledgeable about it then I am).

I really wish we could talk about it. . . I have really been reading up and it seems the more I read, the more confused I am. I honestly grew up thinking that Christmas was just a celebration of Jesus' birthday, and I never understood the meaning of a Christmas tree, but I sure loved decorating it every year with all of our homemade ornaments, and really enjoyed doing it with our kids. . . . now I'm not even sure we're supposed to be doing any of that! I always thought Easter was about the death and resurrection of Jesus, and I never understood what dying eggs and hunting them was all about, but I sure enjoyed finding them (and eating them right then and there lol!) as a child and took my older 3 to egg hunts at the church every year.

Now that Aaron is getting to the age where he is old enough to start participating in these things, we're wondering if we're doing the right thing by having these traditions. If we stop doing them, won't my older kids be confused? And, until we have a true understanding of the traditions we've been blindly following, do we even know what we're supposed to be doing?

*SIGH* I wish I had never opened those two threads over in Morality and Ethics. I'm more confused than ever.

Solo, I stopped talking to my mom except for when I have to for that very same reason. I feel your pain.

ThursdaysChild, I absolutely love those kinds of nights. Hot pizza, warm jammies, mmmmmmm. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend an evening to me!

Our church back home has a Chrismon tree . All the decorations are traditional Christian symbols. For advent, have an Advent wreath on your table and each week light the appropriate candle while reading the corresponding lessons for that week (just find a lectionary for the readings).

For time changes...we had ours last weekend. I live in a country with frequent power outages. So the only clock in the house is the microwave which gets reset several times a day anyway. Then the clocks in computer and cell phone. Then the car. Not too hard to keep up with. Back home I had more to deal with.

Sarah- Ugh! I was up at midnight and it didn't occur to me to start the new thread. I actually thought of it earlier but since it wasn't November yet for me I didn't. Maybe next month.

It's raining and storming and is a beautiful way to spend the quiet morning. Except that Elektra doesn't want to go to the bathroom in our nice little garden. No, she's too scared. So I had to take her up to the street and walk her up and down it to get her to do her thing. Ugh! Silly desert dog!

oops, sorry. I didn't know if anyone had called it or not, but no one was in the list at the top when I created this one.

We don't have Thanksgiving here. All I can think is, "This is November, so that means next month is Christmas!"

Some churches I have attended have had a "Jesse" tree. It is similar to the Chrismon tree concept. I don't have any links, but I have seen ornament sets at Christian bookstores and CBD. I am sure you could make your own too.

Remembrance Sunday is the second Sunday of November, the Sunday nearest to 11 November (Remembrance Day), which is the anniversary of the end of the hostilities of the First World War at 11 a.m. in 1918. Wreaths of poppies are laid on the memorials and two-minutes' silence is held at 11 a.m. Church bells are usually rung 'half muffled', creating a sombre effect.

Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God, and is still celebrated as such by some religious families, but it is now considered a secular holiday as well.

I am happy to report that we successfully got all sixteen (16) clocks changed in our house and yard, and they all match! I suppose if I wore a watch or owned a cell phone I wouldn't be so reliant on clocks, but I do think that we tend to use them decoratively as well as for practical reasons. We do seem to have them in most rooms, including one in the garage, one on the big Catio, and one outside and viewable from the swimming pool and hot tub. My wonderful DH is especially entertained by the number of clocks I have considering the fact that I no longer have to get up at specific times nor do I have to account for every six minutes of my day like I did when I was an attorney. Gosh, I don't miss timesheets, watching the clock, and billing people in six minute increments, that's for sure! But 15 years of clock watching is a hard habit to break, it seems!

It's a beautiful day here today! We zipped out to PetsMart and picked up some finch nesting basket containers to hang in the tree by our front door that stays green with leaves year round ... we get LOTS of liitle birdies in there (juncoes, sparrows, finches, and we wanted to see if any of those little guys would use and make nests or shelters of those fun finchy containers. We've positioned them so we can see them from the living room window -- which should help keep the kitties (and me) occupied with bird watching this fall, winter and into the spring. We've hung some sprays of millet to attract birdies to their new little homes, too!

For those of you keeping track, we're STILL eating some of that ginormous head of cabbage we started last week, lol! We're having some with garlic and butter and salt and pepper with today's chicken lunch. I was hoping that would finish it off, but there's still enough for one more serving tomorrow. It rather feels like the loaves and the fishes here .... I suspect that the cabbage has been multiplying in size in the fridge when we're not looking!

Our County Health Department announced today that they have 11,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine available as of Monday ... which is 1/9th of the doses that they ordered. They said that they don't believe that they will be getting any more in. They are planning four flu shot clinics this week, and don't know if they will have any vaccines left afterward to schedule more. The first clinic is scheduled in a small town about and hour and 15 minutes west of here from 1-3pm tomorrow, and when I called and asked about it they advised that if I wanted a shot, to be in line by 2-3 hours before the clinic begins. So guess what I'm planning on doing tomorrow? Yep, spending three hours in a car and at least 3 hours in line, hoping to get vaccinated. Ahhh .... the joys of being "high risk" in the midst of a pandemic, huh?

Harvie, I am surprised that they don't have a priority distribution system for people like you. From what you have described about your health you sound pretty high risk. Also, I'd keep a close eye on that cabbage! I love having bird nest thingies and feeders around too. My favorite is our thistle feeder. We tried a hummingbird feeder this year (because we saw some around) but didn't get any takers. Josh also likes to watch squirrel antics. Thanks for sharing about the holidays, I wasn't sure about Remembrance Day.

I think the problem with the H1N1 vaccine is that there are a lot of people on the CDC's "priority" list ... pregnant women, children, moms with babies at home, as well as people with certain chronic medical conditions (which is where I fall in .... I have a failed immune system, diabetes, and asthma -- a triple whammy!) I'd really hoped to be able to get a shot in a situation where I didn't have to stand in line 3+ hours around a large crowd of people (because I almost always end up getting sick in such situations, oh well!) Anyway, I just hope I can successfully get the vaccine tomorrow, and then I can be protected 8-10 days later.

Sometimes it can take a while to attract hummers -- especially if there are other food sources around for them. If you live someplace where they have hummers year 'round, leave your feeder up for them in the winter when there are fewer alternate food sources for them! (If you're not sure if you have hummers year 'round, let me know and I can look it up for you!) We get year 'round hummers here.

We live in CT, so they don't stick around for the winter. The people across the street do a veritable smorgasboard for birdies so they might feed over there and just cruise our place for a little exercise and sight seeing! Hope you can get your shot tomorrow with as little hassle as possible AND without getting sick. My OBs office has the vaccine and I declined it - maybe if you jet across country I can sneak you in and get you "my dose"! Just kidding of course!

Harvie, I really think that whole waiting in line stinks. Why can't they just send them to the Dr.'s offices especailly for people like you.

Ok, our family party went well and I didn't blow a gasket.. I actaully did have to leave the room a few times and roll my eyes. Maybe God really wants me to pray for these folks? I do, most of the time. We're actually thiinking about going out of town for Christmas this year.

I love hummingbirds. I don't have a feeder for them, but have seen them on occasion on my Hostas and a few other flowers. We saw a bunch when we were visiting Colorado Springs a few years ago.

In the UK, people in the priority "vulnerable" groups are being sent individual letters by their GPs this week, inviting them in for the vaccination. My mother will no doubt get a letter, as she is 85 and is a diabetic, so it will be interesting to see how they make the arrangement and whether or not she is guaranteed a jab (if it's anything like the flu jab, she will be; because she is housebound atm, the nurse came out to her house in order to give her the ordinary flu jab).

What's a niggle?

We were at the mall Friday night and they've have decorations up already and Santa's House is up and ready to go. Kind of early?

I called my primary care physician's office this week, and they said that IF they get in H1N1 vaccine shots, they've been told it won't be at least for another 3-4 weeks, and then they won't be getting enough in for all of the "high risk" patients, so it will be first-come, first-served.... and we just have to keep calling in to see if it has arrived. This just seemed so inefficient and unreliable, we're going to (instead) try to get my shot tomorrow at one of the Health Departments "Rural Shot Clinics." Since the H1N1 is pretty widespread in our area NOW, waiting another month in the hopes that maybe, possibly, hopefully I could get a shot from my doctor didn't seem to be the most proactive approach.

Yay for non gasket-blowing! Let me just say that vacationing to avoid family gatherings is an EXCELLENT idea!
