I was part of a women's study group that recently concluded after meeting weekly for about a year, which to me was a pretty big commitment. I consider the ladies from the group to be friends and am interested in staying in touch to a point, but it seems the other ladies want to stay in touch a lot more than I do. They've scheduled a series of three-day weekend retreats every two or three months when I would prefer just having dinner out together every once in awhile. The next retreat is in a couple of weeks, and I actually have a schedule conflict that will keep me from attending, but I dread the idea of having to find an excuse not to attend whenever a retreat is scheduled. I'm trying to figure out a way to gently convey to these ladies that I want to stay in touch, but I'm really not interested in attending the weekend retreats. How can I do this without appearing that I don't care, don't want to be their friend, don't want to stay in touch, etc.? Suggestions appreciated.

Be honest with them. Tell them that you would love to keep in touch with them because you valued the group and enjoyed their company but you're unable to attend any retreats because of other commitments, money, etc. Suggest the dinner idea and see what they say.

Honesty is best. I don' think it is offensive to not want to do weekend retreats. I would definately bring up going to dinner.

I guess part of the reason I feel funny about saying I'm not interested in the retreats is that everybody else in the group seems to love them and raves about how wonderful they are. I just feel like an odd duck, I suppose.

I just got another email from my former coleader of the group asking if I could come Sunday morning. *sigh* So I sent everyone in the group an email saying I don't feel I can commit to retreats right now but I'd enjoy meeting for dinner to catch up. Thanks for your suggestions. Sometimes I just need a gentle push. :)
