It's that time of year again.

I went to Duane Reade yesterday to buy some chocolate for people in my office, and the shelves were already stocked with Halloween goodies.

I figured it was the perfect excuse to start the annual Halloween thread.

You KNOW you were waiting for it.

Here you can discuss the pros, the cons, the good ,the bad and the just plain fun of that holiday that breeds endless discussion......

Here are some topics for discussion:

What are you guys going to dress up as? or what are your kids going as?

is your church doing something special?

Do you think Hallween is evil? Why or why not?

Why are the traditional Halloween colors Orange and Black?

Ask whatever you'd like and Halloweenies and Non-halloweenies alike can answer.

This thread was so much fun last year. I know we can't replicate all that goodness, but I'd sure like to try.

I personally think that Halloween is what you make of it. If you go into it with evil intentions, then it can be an evil holiday. but i see nothing wrong with having the fantasy of dressing up like a ballerina or power ranger and giving kids candy. i think it can be a pretty harmless and very imaginative holiday.

I can see this thread's gonna be fun

Well we'll probably do the same thing we do every year. Dress the girls up and go trick or treating in gradma's building then hit the decorated house in my aunt's neighborhood and do some more trick or treating around there.

Although this year our church is planning on having a Harvest Festival so we might just do that instead. We'll see

Personally (and from what I've seen, much like most folks here so far), I have no problem with Halloween in and of itself. It's a fun excuse to dress up and eat candy - two activities I immensely approve of. Yes, there can be people who move it in a bad direction, but I think that can be said of pretty much any holiday.

Same here. My kids never got to dress up or trick or treat until 4 yrs ago. Now they love it and have so much fun. I feel badly that I made them miss out on the fun before.

The school colors are orange & black so GC has a blast getting ribbon and hair stuff and shirts at this time of year. She's going to dress as Dorothy and use our Scottie as Toto (close enough!) and pass out candy. I don't know what MC will dress as.

My kids still haven't ever carved a pumpkin. I intend that they get to this year.

I feel a bit sad for my son - he doesn't really get to enjoy Halloween like I did as a kid. We live out in the sticks - there aren't too many kids around, so we never get trick or treaters. He can't go door to door here in the neighborhood - the houses are way too far apart, and we have a small mountain lion / bear problem.

The idea of him running amok in the neighborhood with a bag of food scares the bejeebers out of me.

We don't really enjoy Halloween like we should. It's a great night for kids to run amok. Once a year is good for that. Kids need it.

We lived in the sticks up until 4 yrs ago, too. So my kids couldn't have gone door to door even if I had let them.

We do costumes, we go door to door, and then we hand out tons of candy at our house. We also usually make cookies. We ALWAYS have the great crankius family pumpkin carving contest.

We also talk about Reformation Day, which is way cool.

I'm thrilled because an annual festival I attend falls during this evil month, so my whole camp is going to have a Halloween theme - I've even been made a flag! I still haven't decided what I'm wearing. I love my zombie. And my voudon mistrix. I have extra costumes on-hand, since I'm not going to DragonCon.

I really want to try and start working with EL wire to make something fabulous.

/sigh

I need to order some sugar skull molds.

Same here! Who doesn't love dressing up their little girls as princesses or as last year - pirates!

To us it's just a day for dress up and free candy!

I tried 4 times to post this as an avatar so you could see it and it would not take. So here it is. Linz carved this from one of those templates and she was so proud. You can get them at the store around halloween. Now we do it every year.

We didn't move to the sticks till Linz was about 5 (She's the youngest) so they did get to TrT for a while. They still remember some of the houses in town. One guy laid in a casket and would rise up to hand them their treats.

She was only 8. I know it's sort of cheating when they use the templates but she was just so happy with her accomplishment. I still smile when I think about how happy she was at how cool it was when she put the candle inside and it glowed like that.
