CBS News projects that Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell will win the governor's race over Democratic candidate Creigh Deeds. McDonnell's victory is the first triumph for a Republican party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008. It also was a setback for the White House in a swing state that was a crucial part of President Obama's electoral landslide just a year ago. REST OF STORY Two of my kids are over in Virginia and have been campaigning for McDonnell all week with Generation Joshua. They are so excited to have been a part of this. I'm so proud of my kids.

In Virginia, McDonnell's decisive 62 percent majority of the independent vote was a key to his victory. Just pointing that out. quote:
In addition, exit polls also showed the impact of Mr. Obama on the race. Majorities of voters in both states said the president was not a factor in their vote. Those who said Mr. Obama was a factor in New Jersey divided as to whether their vote was a vote for the president or against him. In Virginia, slightly fewer voters said their vote was for Mr. Obama than against him. I don't know that either vote was a vote against B0. Ohio in 2006 wasn't a vote against W, it was a vote against the Big 8. (former GOP governor Taft)

Well the two heavyweight Democratic candidates knocked themselves out in the primary by attacking each other and the third guy ran a terrible campaign in the election. Democrats stayed home because he didn't give them a good reason to vote for him. It wasn't much of a vote against Obama. Corzine in NJ has been a bad governor and lost, but the New York 23rd Congressional District has been in Republican hands for 150 years, and they just lost it to the Democrats!! Doesn't look like the Tea Party people will be dancing in the streets tonight. Their man lost a seat that was supposed to be unlosable.

From what I hear, the good news is this republican that won was an actual conservative. This is good news for the republican party mired in centrist national politics.

I'm not to enthralled with either party but I have to say most ppl could see this one coming. They are sick of garbage and I hope with this choice they will be getting a little less of it for awhile.

Wonder if Pelosi still thinks the grassroots is astroturf? This is about the direction this country is going. It is going in the wrong direction. Trouble is, the dems and repubs have been going in the same direction for too long. 40% conservatives and 20% liberals in this country. So a few are forcing the majority in this direction. America has become too lazy and ignorant of what is going on. Time to wake up America.

I'm not sure how much to read into VA, since it has a 20+ year history of voting for governors in the opposite party from whoever is in the White House. Now, New Jersey, that's another story altogether. A solidly blue state that Obama won by double digits just a year ago, now electing a GOP gov? Oh, BTW, Robert Gibbs says Obama "wasn't watching the returns" last night. Kinda like he "wasn't aware" of the Tea Party protests. Even if that were true, would you really feel comfortable having a President who is so incredibly clueless?

Did it say they were moderates and centrists, or independents? I know a lot of independents that are very conservative. They don't identify themselves as Republican because they feel the party has sold out, but they will vote for conservative candidates.

Nothing brings moderates and independents around quite like having liberal Democrats in power. I've seen this my whole life. LBJ and Carter brought us the Reagan Revolution, Hill and Billary's health care and the Dems huge tax increase and corruption brought us the Contract with America and GOP rule of congress for 12 years (with Ms. Lewinski bringing us W. for 8), and now just 10 months of radical leftist power grabs are waking the conservative giant again. Conservatism, when expressed clearly and passionately, with liberalism in clear and immediate contrast, is very appealing to moderate folks.

The "Republican" quit the race several days ago, endorsing the Democrat in the process. I think the message of the 23rd District is clear - the people don't want a Democrat hiding behind an "R". The Conservative candidate still almost pulled it out, without the support of a national machine. That speaks volumes. (Perhaps if the almost 7,000 people who voted for the person no longer running had been paying attention, maybe he would have won.) The blame for that loss, lies at the feet of Steele, Boehner, Gingrich, and all of the other "just put an 'R' by her name and it will be fine" folks who sold out to the party line. And please, please, tell me exactly, what a "moderate" is. Because if she was one(for stimilus, card-check,etc.,), I don't plan on ever voting for one

I think that's spin to try and downplay the results of the election. If he was downplaying his social conservative views, HSLDA would never have spent so much time and effort and energy campaigning for him.

EVERYBODY knew what was at stake in this election. Tea Parties like the one in Hampton Roads and Fredericksburg knew EXACTLY who was the candidate of liberty and who was the candidate of the slow roll to tyranny. They worked hard for ALL of us to send a clear message to Washington. And here is that message to those on Capitol Hill... We get it now. We understand just how dangerous you are to the future of our country. And, we WILL stop you from destroying our liberties.

regarding the NY 23 outcome, don't forget that the GOP didn't have a candidate at the end. Many of the ballots for Skozza-what's-er-name were probably already cast absentee, and that that district went well over 50% for Obama in '08. That's a loss I can handle if I'm a conservative Rep.

The Conservative might have been really good. But a blue-dog dem is better than a less than RINO. Virginia was probably the clincher, but I was rooting for Christy in New Hampshire. Especially after obama made five trips to try and force the election. And how many of those tombstone votes got counted. I do really appreciate Corzine stepping aside gracefully instead of the mess in (was it Minnesota?).
