Do I need to install Ad-Aware - 10/19/2009 5:15:08 PM

On my old computer I used Avast for my anti-virus and Ad-Aware for my anti-spyware. Well on my new computer one friend told me to just keep my Windows Security stuff turned on and install Avast, I've done that. I haven't had any problems. But another friend said her brother turned all her Windows Security stuff off and installed Avast AND Ad-Aware on her computer. So should I install Ad-Aware as another back up or not?

I don't(Ad-Aware). Apparently my virus/spy/worm/malware(Trend Micro)plus the 'Windows stuff'(On) is enough protection and flexibility so far and I'm running an unsecured WiFi network!

You will find as many different opinions about this topic as there are posters. Unless you are running Windows 7, Windows security is insufficient. I don't know if Win7 is or not, I just have no experience there.
So my personal opinion is that for pre-Vista, I turn off Windows security, run Avast and ZoneAlarm. For Windows Vista, I am trying to use Vista security with Avast. My mind is not made up on that one yet.
Personally, I think that you need something like AdAware on Windows (at least pre-7).

I hope you at least changed the default password on your router's administration.
Anyway, I regularly run scans for malware using anti-virus as well as anti-adware. I use both Spybot S&D and AdAware. I've never found anything on my own PCs, but I have on other people's. Better safe than sorry.

Typically people will say that you need a firewall and an antivirus both. If you turn off 'all your windows stuff' that includes the firewall so you need to get one of those. People feel free to correct if I'm wrong but the reason so many ppl don't use Windows' firewall is that it only monitors and restricts incoming traffic. You want a firewall that monitors outgoing as well.
AVG and Avast are free antivirus, I think. There are free firewalls too. Can't find a quicklist but the one I ended up deciding on was Comodo. If you have comcast you can get McAfee internet security (firewall and av) for free.
Apparently you need to not have more than one true AV program at the same time (the full on, always active and checking things kind of program). They will poke each other in the eye.
On top of these things you can have programs that only run when you call them, to scan or check things at will. CCleaner is good for getting rid of temp files and such. Malwarebytes is the ONLY program I found that could take care of a supersweet virus I got last year. I'm a big fan. Adaware's free software is antimalware that you run to find stuff that is already on your comp I believe. FWIW Malwarebytes caught what adaware did not in my case.
If you're unsure of a particular file that might be sketchy, virustotal.com is a site where you can upload it, and it will be 'tested' by a bunch of AV programs, and the stats on how many think it's a baddie will be shown.
I do think if you have a good firewall, AV, and web browser you should not have popups or junk on your computer to start with.
My two cents anyway...
Oh yeah, if you have firefox, I'm a big fan of NoScript too. No sense having junk execute that doesn't need to be while I'm cruising the web.

If you are a car thief, and there are two identical vehicles parked next to each other, but one has a club on the steering wheel, which will you try to steal?
I use Symantec AV and firewall, SpyBOT S&D, AdBlock Plus, full disk encryption, BIOS HDD pass, and a USB token.
Lcannon, you are a brave brave man if that is your WiFi. What if someone uses it for illegal material? Even if it takes them 6 months (and it will take that long), to show you were not even close to the place when the crime went down... you might be out of a job, dragged through the papers, kicked out of your house, and more... "oops. sorry. guess you weren't the one." Furthermore, if you are in the tech field, a prosecutor can slap you with being an accessory. Just a thought...

Install Linux. It's free, MUCH faster, NO security problems, no viruses, no worms, adware, spyware, malware, underware, none of that bad stuff.
Download and burn a CD, put it in the ODD (CD tray), and boot the computer. Try it without installing it. You'll like it. AND, it's GREAT for older machines, because it uses less resources than Windows...

Well, I thought Ad=Aware was a good program. It WAS a good program. But lately, it's been a headache for me:
My original license expired early next year, yet I had to install a 2 month free, then pay for a new upgrade to their product, so that I could continue using it.
Also, it doesn't scan every file on my hard drive. My main security software scans over 300,000 files on it, while this adaware only scans 104,000 files or less. I found out how to adjust the settings to stop skipping certain files, but it still doesn't scan everything.
Because of these reasons, I'm seriously considering asking for my money back and removing it from my computer. I'm not a happy customer!

My favorite combination is AVG for my anti-virus and Ad-Aware for for spyware. They are both great programs that work very well, are light so your computer stays fast, and the best part is: THEY ARE FREE!
