I just discovered these and I enjoy coloring them. They are very relaxing. BUT, one of my minister friends told me that I shouldn't color in them because they are created in circles and could be of the devil.

Does anyone know more background about them, and do you color in them?

Good or Bad??

I looked on Wiki and found this.
quote:

Mandala (Sanskrit maṇḍala "essence" + "having" or "containing", also translates as "circle-circumference" or "completion", both derived from the Tibetan term dkyil khor) is a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism.[1][2] The term is of Hindu origin and appears in the Rig Veda as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other Indian religions, particularly Buddhism. In the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism, mandalas have been developed into sandpainting. They are also a key part of anuttarayoga tantra meditation practices.

quote:

In Judaism
In the Zohar is written, “There exists no circle in the world which is not made from within a single point which is located in the center…and this point, which is located in the center, receives all the light, illuminates the body, and all is enlightened.”[25] The Star of David symbol is a common motif found in mandalas.

quote:

In Christianity
Cowen (2005), states that forms which are evocative of mandalas are prevalent in Christianity: the celtic cross; the rosary; the halo; the aureole; oculi; the Crown of Thorns; rose windows; the Rosy Cross; and the dromenon on the floor of Chartres Cathedral. The dromenon represents a journey from the outer world to the inner sacred centre where the Divine is found.[26]

Similarly, many of the Illuminations of Hildegard von Bingen can be used as mandalas, as well as many of the images of esoteric Christianity, as in Christian Hermeticism, Christian Alchemy, and Rosicrucianism).

There are many people who say that Christians should do any sort of yoga of it's origins. However, many Christians don't have a problem with it ~ the positions are simply positions and they don't start chanting during a class (I don't know any Christian that would attend a yoga class where chanting was included.

This is what crossed my mind when you mentioned circles. Some years ago, I was on a Christian holiday and a the (tiny) chapel had been set up as a labyrinth. Many of those are circles though.

I do get a little frustrated sometimes when we're told that something is deemed so bad, we shouldn't use it. Should we go and spend more money because our groceries came to £6.66 (or, $6.66 )? Should we stop drawing circles (ever) because they could be of the devil? Should we stop... the list is probably endless...

A Buddhist (since this a thread about mandalas) would ask:
Does your action harm or contribute to the general quality of life?
Is your action beneficial or harmful to yourself?
Does your action benefit or harm others?
Would your actions cause you to edify or reproach yourself?
Does the action benefit or harm religious or social custom?

Following your minister friend's logic---buttons, polka dots, umbrellas, aspirin tablets, coasters, cookies, man-hole covers, tires, steering wheels, hardware washers, gears, wind turbines, baseballs, the sun, the planets and the stars, et al.---"could be" intrinsically of Satan.
