My gastrointetinal specialist is recommending that I get one, as well as another procedure that will go from my throat down into my stomach -- due to extreme stomach cramping, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, constipation, etc. I've been being tested for several years now, with no diagnosis, but they are looking at several auto immune disorders. Anyways, has anyone had one that can share what exactly this is? What can I expect recovery wise? Is it painful? Anything I should be aware of? Etc. Any information is greatly appreciated. Hugs! Michele

The upper G.I. has a chalky drink that is "supposed" to taste like a flavored milkshake but doesn't and the drink for the other end is better drank with white grape juice to mask the taste of it.(It is really horrible tasting) I went with a friend when she had to have some tests and hence had to drink the stuff (though I've never had the pleasure myself). She was told by the nurses to just knock it back as fast as she could to get it over with.

I had an ulcer at around 3.5 and had to have an upper gi done. I still remember being all excited about getting this giant "chocolate milkshake" all to myself. Boy, was that a disappointment! Kris

Michele, Not to dash your dreams of getting to drink the chalky stuff but I have a feeling what your doctor is planning to do is a colonoscopy and EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy.) The colonoscopy is exactly what Memaw said, and the worst part is drinking the golytely which will get your bowels moving...a lot...and clean you out. They have to do this so that there is essentially nothing in your bowels and they can they clearly see the bowel wall. The EGD is very similar to the colonscopy, although with a different camera that they put in your mouth, down your esophagus, and into your stomach. That way they can clearly visualize everything as well and look for abnormalities. There is no prep required for this. If you are having a colonoscopy, I would bet they will do the EGD at the same time. They will usually give you conscious sedation, which means you aren't completely knocked out, but very sedated and you will not remember a thing. They will do one and then the other, to avoid extra sedation, and that way they get to visualize almost everything in your GI tract. As for recovery, it's mainly just letting the drugs wear off. You shouldn't really experience much as far as pain. They are both relatively simple procedures. Good luck! ETA- If you do have golytely to drink, my patients tell me it's WAY better on ice.

Have you scheduled it yet? Hi Memaw -- no not yet. I've been avoiding it still. I've not felt real good this week, and a part of me is concerned it will cause another flare of whatever disease I am dealing with -- plus with not feeling well already -- sigh. I will call them on Monday. I know I have to do it, I just don't want to. Thank you again everyone for your information. :-) With love, Michele

Michele Have you already done the food elimination sort of thing, to see if it's a food intolerance?

Manda quote:
Have you already done the food elimination sort of thing, to see if it's a food intolerance? In a sense, yes. It seems there is really no rhyme or reason behind it sometimes. I've had IBS for many years, and have had an illness that escapes the doctors at the moment for the last 7 ish years, and this goes right in line with it all. One day I can eat the same food that I'd eaten the day before (that did fine with) and then the next day have the same food set me off. It's the weirdest thing. The last few days have been better -- of course. Like when you take your car to the mechanic and the sound it was making before you took it in, it no longer makes it when the mechanic is listening, but as soon as you leave, the sound is there again -- and no mechanic to listen to it! I'll keep ya'll posted. I'm calling their scheduling dept tomorrow.

Michele Just to say that with food allergies there is an instant reaction, but with food intolerances there is not - the toxins build up in the system and then come out in a certain symptom at a different time to when you ate/drank it. And sometimes it's food combinations in the gut that trigger the reaction. Wheat and dairy (especially if the dairy is milk) are a trigger for me. My naturopath told me that wheat commonly causes constipation and dairy commonly causes diarrhoea. Eating the two together would often bring on IBS, but not right away. I'd honestly suggest cutting out dairy for a month, and seeing if that makes any difference.
