Thank you.
This year Advent begins on November 29th. I'd like to hear from people who observe and/or celebrate the Advent Season.
What is your motivation for doing so?
What "things" do you do during Advent; both corporately and indiviually?
What is your favorite part of Advent?
While I realize that Advent is, in and of itself, a time of preparation for Christmas, are there any things you do to prepare for Advent?

Grew up LCMS and definitely observed Advent. At church, there was the Advent wreath with candles that was lit progressively each week.
At home, we did something similar and also had Christmas focused devotions.
We might do something this year in our missional community - but not sure yet.

When do you start celebrating Advent?
I know it's 4 weeks out...so that would mean Nov. 29? Is that right?

Yep, this year, Advent starts on November 29th.
I actually found a site earlier that lists the start of Advent year-by-year, but I'm not finding it at the moment. When I stumble upon it again, I'll post a link in here.
What is LCMS?
Wait, I just googled it . . . does it stand for Lutheran Church Missouri Synod?

yep that's it  Seen the old black/white Luther movie about a zillion times when we celebrated Reformation Day (nailing of the 95 thesis by Luther) during this time of year. I sure was happy when they did a remake and updated some of the conversations.
I was searching for some creative things to do for Advent. If anyone has any links or suggestions, please let me/us know!

Oh cool! Yes, we can share our creative ideas in here . . . that's one of the reasons why I started this thread so early. Hopefully, it will help people prepare.
I grew up Catholic; and while the Church certainly celebrated Advent, I don't remember doing so otherwise.
For the past several years, I've felt a pulling to observe Advent but haven't done so.
I'm going to do so this year.

We used to go to a non-denom (only stopped because we moved too far away). They held an observance of the advent season with the wreath, scripture and song. It was a good starting off point for that week's message. We enjoyed it.

On the first sunday in Advent the sermon in church revolves around the advent-wreath and what it means.
It explains why there are four candles and three ribbons and the traditions of Advent.
So the congregation gets a refresment-course every year on the church's New Year
And the christmas bazaar is always on the first sunday also, I'll be running the pancake-booth and also be making THIS with some local kids.

Hubby, and I have an advent wreath, and do the candles each Sunday night. We talk about what they mean, read scriptures, pray, etc. It's a great time for the two of us, and we always look forward to it.

I grew up Methodist and now go to a Covenant Church - both observe Advent. We do the wreath with candles etc.
At home I have also had various traditions, some I still do, some not. We had a wooden "manger" that I would wrap small things in, some "boy stuff" and some "girl stuff" (not as much since I had boys), a few things for men and women. Then anyone who visited during the advent season could take a small gift when they left. I would wrap things like christmas pins for the women, pencils, small toys, samples of perfume or aftershave... nothing expensive, just a small gift from the manger to remind us of the real gift given so many years ago.
We also did the home advent wreath and devotions, the Methodist church I went to used to put together a small booklet of songs and devotions that corresponded with the Sunday services.
I had an advent calander that had a small "window" to open each day with a verse for the day and small piece of candy or something for the kids.
We usually started baking and making candy on the first Sunday... and the weekend after Thanksgiving is always my start of Christmas decorating!
I think maybe this year I will do the Advent Candles again- maybe in a wreath, maybe not.
