I was handed that same piece of paper with the exact same sentiments on it 12 years ago when I accepted my first job as a public school teacher. I was so excited. I knew that my job was more than trying to get the 3 R's accomplished every day, but I thought maybe the sentiments on that paper were perhaps just a little exaggerated. I could not have been more wrong. Teaching is the the most difficult job I have ever done. I am a veteran of 20 years in the military, and although I'm proud of my service, even that paled in comparison to my responsibilities as a teacher. It is not for the faint of heart or for any but the most dedicated. It requires your strength, talents, diligence, understanding and willingness to set standards where there usually are none. It requires the knowledge that Jesus must be your constant companion, holding you upright and steady. A teacher must simply love teaching. There is no other reason to do it. I taught 3rd grade for 10 years and left it due to a disability. But even if I were to recover sufficiently to return, I don't think I would. At least not in a public school. I would never allow myself to be forced to teach things that I know are ungodly simply because our society wants me to. All I can say, is to please, support the Christian people who are still out there in the public schools giving it their best, phenomenal efforts. They need you and your prayers now, more than ever.

Who says teachers don't pray? Both my parents pray in their classrooms, my sister-in-law prays in her classroom, every other Christian teacher I know prays in his/her classroom. I think that post is trying to make a point and misses the mark.

Quite honestly I've seen this thing over and over and over again. Teachers do pray - TRUST me. Of course I want them to teach kids to balance a checkbook and the importance of voting, and to fill out a job application. Of course I want them to be observant enough to realize when something isn't right and then to ask questions of the student. Of course I want them to make sure the students in their classrooms and schools follow school rules concerning dress codes and disruptive behavior. Of course I want them to check back packs if there is a suspicion of something not appropriate being brought into the school. I will agree that teachers do not get paid nearly what they are worth. But never has a teacher that I know been told they can't pray. Now I do know that they can't lead their students in prayer - but that's not saying that they can't pray during their day, and that they don't. I know several that start their day with prayer every day. Blessings, Garsy

quote:
I just can't lead students in prayer This is key, teachers can pray, it is their constitutional right. They just cannot lead their students in prayer. They can be present when students are praying, if students initiate the prayer they can join in.

Interesting post. As a music teacher, I constantly face the dreaded "church and state" challenge. We had this program called "Pinwheels for Peace" and the principal asked about the song, "Let There Be Peace on Earth." She then changed her mind when she realized that it said "with God as our Father." We have a couple of overtly atheistic parents. That being said, I do pray for my students, and when they ask me the story behind "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel," I tell them about the dry bones. And yes, we will be singing real Christmas songs at the "Winter Program" this year. But teachers do have to be careful. That's why we need to be bathed in prayer.
